I am now a DELL whore

Dear TOTA Diary,

I just leased a new office, which pretty much requires me to buy some new computer equipment. Oh boy Yea, so a good minute after realizing that, i figured that my existing home system (Athlon 1400, ugh) will do just fine at the office, meaning that the new system intended for the office can go... you guessed it, straight into my bedroom

Haha, i'm as excited as a schoolgirl right now! I haven't played video games in over a year (see above system specs for a detailed explanation as to why), and being the die-hard fan of games based on id's Software's tech (Doom, Quake, Half-Life) that i am, i've been DYING to give DOOM III and HL2 a shot. Finally, i can do just that

Anyway, i haven't decided on the system yet, but i sure as hell have on the display. DELL 2450FPW Best part? It can be had on eBay for around $1,000 including shipping. And it's tax deductible. So my final cost is under $700. I love this country

That's all for now.

P.S. Any suggestions for a good system to buy off eBay? Something in the 3GHz range with 1GB 533 and a kickass video card.

Good luck with Dell's tech support, or the distinct lack thereof.

I'm very upset that I paid $850 for my 17" LCD just 16 months ago and you're grabbing a rad 24" with vastly superior specs for less coin. It makes me all warm inside.

BUT OH SAMSUNG 1701MP I LOVE YOU, NEVER PART WITH ME

Posted by Swamper on Jan-09-2006 22:55:

DELLs are ok.

I won't be parting with my AMD beast any time soon though

For some reason, I read this thread title as

nice!

threadjack...

yeah, I can research the specs myself, but anyone have opinions/experience with Dell's LCD TVs?

I'm seriously considering picking up Dell's 37" LCD...but also looking at a Samsung 32" or 37" LCD (since I too *love* my Samsung 17" flat panel monitor and know they're of great quality).

We have that exact computer at TD Canada Trust. Or at least VERY similar.

Edit:
d!abolics. His actually looks a little wider but the new ones we just got are from Dell and the monitor looks EXACTLY the same. (Except it's a tad wider. )

I've got the same one. Kick-ass display - super sharp, great contrast, PiP, and it's got a slot for every single flash card on the side (including the stupid Sony one - I think!).

Only thing that pisses me off is you can't adjust the contrast when using DVI. But with the brightness all the way down to zero it's alright.

Posted by d!abolic on Jan-10-2006 03:20:

Glad to see you guys like the display. I was gonna buy a 21", but figured i might as well spend a little extra on a 24" so that i won't have to buy another LCD for another 2-3 years.

Also, i've decided to, after all, build the damn thing myself. Shit, i just wanna be able to customize everything to my liking. That and i really want one of those badass new home theater cases, as opposed to the same outdated tower design.

Hmm did noone latch onto the fact that id software doesnt make half-life? But... Valve..

Posted by Tygon on Jan-10-2006 04:47:

I want one of those Dell monitors... but I may have to settle for the Gateway 22" instead. I get staff prices from Future Shop... WOOT! But seriously... that Dell lcd is unreal!!!

The original Half-Life engine is a heavily modified Quake2 engine, by id Software.

This is my LCD.

Dated design by today's standards (2 years old) but it has a built-in TV tuner. Pretty rad.

Here are the components i picked. Gonna buy em and put everything together later this week:

Athlon 64 3200+
Gigabyte K8NE Motherboard
Silverstone Black HTPC Case
GeForce 6800GS
1GB 400MHz PC3200
160GB Maxtor ATA133
Lite-ON DVD+RW

Everything, including tax, is around $1200 after tax. The monitor is gonna end up costing around that much as well.

I built his same shit almost exactly, back in 2004, except I had an old Radeon 9000 Pro 128MB kickin' around that I still use .

Athlon64 3200+
Asus K8V SE Deluxe mobo
some old case I had
1GB Samsung PC3200 DDR RAM
120GB Seagate SATA-150 harddrive
some old Pioneer slot-loading DVD drive I had (moved CD burner to other comp, cause iPods don't need CDs).

Just under a g-note for the CPU, HSF, mobo, harddrive, and RAM.

Posted by VERTiG0 on Jan-10-2006 06:10:

On another note, I used to run an Athlon 1400 as well. I had a Globalwin FOP38 fan and some fucking wackjob all copper heatsink that weighed almost 700 grams that had to be screwed into the mobo as if would literally rip the socket off if it were simply clipped on (I cannot remember the name of it).

That was back in my days of overclocking... I was determined to take that "worn out Thunderbird core" CPU to the fucking limit, as the 1400 was the supposed pinnacle of that Tbird core.

I rigged up a shitload of small 120mm Globalwin fans in some dryer ducting, and ran said ducting over top of the heatsink/fan/CPU combo and then the other end out my fucking window. This was the middle of winter, so -10C temps were common.

Sucking in sub-zero temperature air at some ungodly CFM, I was able to take a CPU that would top 70C at full load down to about 20C under full load and bring it up to 1780MHz.

1400 top end, indeed I showed up a bunch of people back then. Holy shit I was a nerd. ePenis++

I have been looking at the Acer 26" 16:9 LCD for my computer (currently have a 19" Sony Trinitron)

But after i saw that Dell 24"...it's a tough choice now. DVI in AND the rotate function

Too bad it's 16:10 tho. not sure if my ATI 9250 will like the native on it.

Posted by zokissima on Jan-10-2006 13:39:

If you're buying that LCD, go for the newer 7500 nVidia series of video cards.
