Is it safe?

So i keep getting this pop-up saying that i need to download this scanner for my computer... it seems like its from windows and it says that without it my PC may basically start effing up ( crashes, freezing and loss of data) and yesterday my computer was going a bit slow and froze once.. but then i get a pop-up security warning from my firewall saying if i download, these files may harm my computer...

does anyone know if this scanner download is safe?? it hasn't been brought to my attention thru my security updates or anything..so far i've just been ignoring it and closing the windows that pop-up..

my anti virus program is out of date however.. could this possibly just be because of that fact?

any help would be MUCH appriciated.. i'm good with computers.. but i'm at a loss here!

thanks,
Nikitha

Looks like you got Spyware or Adware (whatever the fuck the difference is) on your computer. My suggestion: HD Reformat.

Then add some good spyware removers & pop-up blockers.

Just be glad you arent infected with those damn porn ones! Bastards!

I will bet it is Spy Axe. Does it have a little popup in the system tray? That seems to be a legit Windows popup? If so, then it probably is. Google Spy-Axe Removal...

PC Safety Guidelines

1. Implement a software firewall
2. Run Windows Updates
3. Ensure Antivirus auto-protect is running

4. Install MS AntiSpyware or Spysweeper, and schedule regular auto-scans.
5. Install SpyBot AND AdAware (as LKD said) and run weekly manual scans.

6. Browse the web with Mozilla Firefox, not Internet Explorer.
7. Turn off HTML e-mail and auto-display of pictures in e-mails.
8. Don't open e-mails from people you don't know.

more on a hardware note. Pop the case open and just check the power supply for heavy dust buildup. make sure all the fans are clean. clogged fans and grates cause your lock-ups.

but do all those software items as well..

Darwinism at work...

Does this popup have blinking colours? That's usually a good sign of a scam.

Sometimes those programs will allow someone control of your computer, and they can use your ip and other info to rip off banks and clone your identity. Download nothing.

Hahahahahhaha. My favourite part are peoples' reactions when you do it to them in person.

The first time I saw the first one was on a 20 ft projection screen in a classroom.

You could hear the screams from the other side of the wing.

100% scam

the ironic thing is that those "spyware notices" are usually spyware themselves.
