Conservative running for MP involved in scandal

But there is a big difference in how it was handled. Harper wont allow him to sit as a Conservative MP if he wins. And if he were sitting i suspect he would have been kicked out. Liberal track record says that he would have stayed put and martin would have defended him vigorously like the ralph goodale affair for example.

It seems the only time the liberals kick someone out is if they disagree with party line and not for ethical reasons.

It's refreshing to see a leader deal with a problem head on instead of trying to sweep it under the rug. Lets hope this is a sign of things to come.

quote:

OTTAWA (CP) - Stephen Harper says a Tory candidate dogged by a smuggling controversy won't be allowed to sit as a Conservative MP if he wins election.

Derek Zeisman, who is running in the B.C. constituency formerly held by retiring Conservative MP Jim Gouk, is to appear in court next month. In July 2004, Zeisman was crossing into British Columbia from the United States when Canada Customs charged him with attempting to smuggle in a 1989 Mercedes-Benz and 112 containers of alcohol.

He is also accused of lying to customs officers about the incident.

"As a consequence of that, I will say today that this candidate, Mr. Zeisman, will not be sitting as a Conservative should he be elected," Harper said at a campaign appearance in Halifax.

"He'll have to get this matter resolved and until it gets resolved he cannot sit as a Conservative.

"It's too late in the campaign legally for me to withdraw the candidate or change the candidate."

He said Zeisman should have owned up to his legal troubles before seeking the nomination.

Zeisman is currently in hospital following a serious car accident five days before Christmas

Very good article/points, another reason why he deserves a chance as PM, and how his character differs from martin's

The timing couldn't be better for Harper to make himself look good.

Harper is just as evil as Martin....don't kid yourselves....if it wasn't election time this would never have made the newspaper

right now people can only speak based on past actions. And so far it looks favourable for harper. If harper starts to act like martin does now ill be the first one to openly critisize him. But so far i dont see that happening.

no kidding - harper just cant let this slide because it would look bad

if they were elected, it would be swept under the rug all the same

i agree that canada needs a change, but dont idolize the conservatives too much - they too have an agenda (and a platform to deliver) and politicians are politicians wether right or left wing.

how do u know?

I can say this is true with martin 100% because hes proven this time and time again.

I cant say the same with harper. He may or may not sweep it under the rug but the possibility of him not doing so is much greater than martin based on past performance.

im willing to give harper a chance. If he fucks up royally than out he goes. Thats the very reason why we have elections every 4 years.
