Jester Bush chokes on pretzel, passes out

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush fainted briefly in the White House residence Sunday after choking on a pretzel while watching a National Football League playoff game on television, White House physician Dr. Richard Tubb said.

The doctor, an Air Force colonel, said Bush quickly recovered and is doing well.

"I do not find any reason that this would happen again," said Tubb. "He fainted due to a temporary decrease in heart rate brought on by swallowing a pretzel."

Tubbs said Bush suffered an abrasion on his left cheek the size of a half dollar and a bruise on his lower lip, apparently from falling onto the floor from a couch.

Bush was alone in the room watching TV while his wife, first lady Laura Bush, was in a nearby room on the telephone.

Tubbs said Bush believes he was out only for a few seconds because when he awoke, his two dogs were sitting in the same position they were when he lost consciousness.

"He said it (the pretzel) didn't seem to go down right," Tubbs said.

The fainting spell occurred at approximately 5:35 p.m. EST and Bush contacted a nurse on duty at the White House five minutes later. Tubbs was paged eight minutes later and rushed to the White House to examine the president.

Tubbs said Bush, under his own power, took an elevator from the second floor of the residence to the first floor doctor's office where he underwent a through examination that included use of a heart monitor.

His blood pressure and pulse were normal, Tubbs said.

Bush has a lower-than-normal pulse rate, which doctors attribute to his rigorous workout regime. But Tubbs said that low heart rate made him more prone to fainting when the pretzel stimulated a nerve when it got caught in his throat.

He said Bush had complained Saturday and Sunday of "being a little off his game," feeling that he was coming down with a head cold.

White House spokesman Ari Fleisher said Bush intended to keep his regular schedule Monday, which includes an early morning trip to the Midwest.

Bush was watching the Baltimore-Miami game when the incident occurred.

I think the president choking from a pretzel is embarassing enough for the U.S. You can just imagine what all the other world leaders are thinking of him now...

Posted by tiesto14 on Jan-14-2002 06:58:

LoL @ the copyright "this material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed." (see: TranceAddict.com). heheh...

I have to agree with tiesto14 here though. I don't see what's so funny about it... Yes its abnormal. But funny? Nah. I choked on a cookie once I don't think based on his occupation that he should be dis-allowed from experiencing life's everyday normalities....

You know what i think is embarassing? The fact that all the newsgroups across the nation made such a big deal about this. I don't want to hear about it if the president takes a big shit or has constipation. Keep the news important. Although, i must admit, i almost choked on my pizza watching the Dolphins game... man, what an embarassment.

once, when I was a kid, I got sent away from the table, so I tried to Swallow a loonie(read Canadian 1 dollar coin) and it got stuck in my throat(dont ask why I tried to swallow a loonie after being sent away from the table, cuz I dunno why), I couldnt breath @ all, and my dad gave me the Heimlick manoever(sp?)...oh wait, fuckin dr. heimlick patented his manoever, so its called what now? I dont remember..doesnt matter anyways

but I made my dad grab the loonie from the toilet!

I too think its funny that bush fainted on a pretzel... I mean cmon, didnt he get taught to chew his food? The fainting part aint funny, but if its gonna happen, this is a pretty funny way!

i wasnt calling u idiotic, just ur patronism... its a bit on the extreme side....

and yeah, i expect a pet to react when smth happens to its "boss"

just like when im a bit depressed or smth, my cat always comes to me & makes me feel happy again...

Posted by Eugene on Jan-14-2002 21:55:

This is weird...
Have you guys heard about someone fainting because they didn't swallow something well, AND they had a low heart rate? Very strange indeed.
And also what's up with that "nerve" that they said was damaged during the choking? How can that be?!

Plus, I would never associate a choking incident with that big bruise that Bush has on his cheek and lip. How did that come about..?

Bush really looks like he's in a war right now

Tell me about it. Chrtien definitely had his share of embarrassing moments and got hammered by the media (esp. the neck wrangling incident).. everyone gets a laugh out of it at the end though, so it's best to take it lightheartedly.

Jester

i huess this is not funny for the americans fos it is such an odd event for their country thats what makes it even more hilarious to the rest of the world....besides...who the hell chokes on a pretzel???and faints moreover??
