Then go into the future and get us some pie.

Nothing tastes better than pie that hasn't been cooked yet.

Tiramisu's pretty good shit, I gotta say. Personally, though, I prefer french silk chocolate pie after it's been chilled in my maternal grandfather's freezer. I dunno what his settings are, but those pies are exquisite.

I also like a good Kahlua.

Posted by elektrikal on Jan-18-2006 04:56:

cheesecake and keylime pie rule all. Better yet, keylime cheesecake w/ a fresh wedge of lime. Tiramisu is tasty I agree, but the best of all is unhealthy Double Stuff Oreos w/ milk.

yeah and i still love it

The only thing good about that is that the word "fuckdonut" is now in my vocabulary.

Wow. That'd be really cool and funny if it made sense. You're supposed to party for yourself? Trance fans don't follow the music, just the DJs? What a load of shit.

temporary autonomous zone for the win!

I find that most of the people I go out with are not interested in that idea at all anymore, when people talk of soul and autonomoy and whatnot, they get all defensive and say stuff like "I just enjoy music for what it is, fuck that spiritual bullshit"

I think that most people only care about rythm and low end, and don't really give a damn about meanings or purpose of the event or anything like that, just mindless drunken flailing.

At this point I think changing the mindset of everyone out there is futile, the way this cartoon says we should enjoy parties seems to be a thing of the past, not enough people really care about it enough to bring it back.

Posted by Ishkur on Jan-18-2006 16:54:

Not the masses, at any rate. The music was never meant for them; they were never meant to enjoy it at that level, and they don't possess the intellectual cognizance to even try, anyway.

To be underground is to be in a state of constant digging. Those who know will come. Those who understand will coalesce and unite with like-mindeds. As for the unwashed normals, they can proceed to have their concert-DJ things and pretend that they're getting real genuine culture, but we all know it is a facade. The essence of the culture passes through them like a seed passing undigested through the body of a bird. They'll never gain any sustenance from something they'll never quite understand nor enjoy the purpose of.

The TAZ is about annihilating the outside world of social pretentiousness; the mores, the norms, the personal space and common ethics and morality that people accept without question. It is about shattering the sense of self. The anarchy is entirely internal. It is solipsist freedom, if you can think of it that way.

I don't expect anyone to understand this, and quite frankly, I don't care if they do. No one can touch us. No one can see us. Selfless hedonism is the goal, for without the sense of self, the party does not exist.

For some, this is just too arbitrary for them to grasp. They need something physical, something objective and real to cling on to. They need something to party for: A reason, a purpose, a justification for why they are there or what they are spending their money on. The DJ is perfectly apt as a placeholder, an excuse, a safety net, a comfort zone, a necessary crutch to refocus one's value. And when these values are compounded, he becomes a foci, an epoch, a conduit to channel these wasteful energies. He becomes the controller of your reality. He determines your existence, your placement, your power. It is, in effect, a form of emotional slavery. Where once the DJ was a techno-shamen, engaged in a delicate, controlled dance with the revellers....now he has become the taskmaster, whipping the populace into a frenzy with gimmicks and bombast.

Some might not think that anything's wrong with this, and they are free to think that. But believe me when I say that they are doing themselves a serious disservice when they do so. They are cutting themselves short, in way that is a detriment to their overall mental health.

But, then again.......no one ever said partying was healthy.

Where do you come up with this shit?

"Some people see things that are and ask, Why?
Some people dream of things that never were and ask, Why not?
Some people have to go to work and don't have time for all that shit".

Quite possibly the most agreeable thing I've seen you write. This is an exapanded version of what people mean when they accuse trance (or any dance music) of selling out. That broad complaint doesn't really capture what's being expressed, which is that headliners and figureheads appeal to a very safe and pathetic haven of objectives and icons when the whole POINT of rave culture is to deconstruct those attachments.

Is the whole TAZ mythology just a hopelessly idealistic cover, a sort of unifying creed that never reaches actuality? Perhaps. But also possible to a point, I think.

Instead of people that worship DJ's, I think these people are killing EDM music:

It's impossible not to agree with the sentiment, but you managed to put it in the most self-important "I'm better than the masses" way imaginable.

Basically put: "Lots of people may think they're underground (hence the dance music evangalist syndrome), but all they've really done is moved one step beyond the radio, and so still cling to the aesthetic and the frontman which superstar DJs deliver" and fuck all that pretentious filler.

Posted by Zombie0915 on Jan-19-2006 13:37:

I had to look this up:
Solipsism (from the Latin ipse = "self" and solus = "alone") is the metaphysical belief that only oneself exists, and that "existence" just means being a part of one's own mental states all objects, people, etc, that one experiences are merely parts of one's own mind.

thats a neat word.

I've always been interested in TAZ, in creating hyperreality, but every time I talk about this stuff to the local EDM fans they treat me like I'm some sort of aberration, saying things like I "can't enjoy music in its pure essence and instead get caught up in cerebral/academic nonsense" (I get this shit all the time).

The overwhelming majority of people I see when I go out, they think that the only thing that matters is the sound of the bass, they say as long as the beat and the bass is "good" (meaning the flock finds it appealing at the moment) that they will dance, and that the song could be advocating the second coming of hitler but they wouldn't care so long as the beat is good. They act like these things we are interested in are things that went obsolete at the end of the 90's and say stuff like I'm a "throwback" even though I'm too young to have ever experienced anything from the 90's.

The music here reflects that idea, its all DnB/Breakbeats/bogprog, all dominated by bass sound. Kids all clique together acting like a high school dance with the fashion and the judgement, nobody does anything really bold or crazy for fear of standing out too much. I feel like todays EDM parties are about magnifying the world of social pretensiousness, rather than being a rejection of the usual they are instead an exageration of it.

I have a small group of like-minded friends, but not enough of us for a party. I try and track down these gatherings of like mindeds but they are usually outside of traveling distance, I can't reach canada or the west coast or new york or florida, I find that most of these things that I want are happening in more populous areas, places with that big city anonymity. I've contacted a few people, they say they do alot more traveling in the summer and that is when things will most likely come my way.

I think most people just turn their brains off and use EDM as some sort of "back to primitive" experience to flail about mindlessly to without concern for what the party is about. I go out and I hunt for this certain spirit, I try and find parties with meaning, people with that certain ideal, some sort of substance aside from sex/noise/drugs/money. I enjoyed trance alot because it carried this cyberpunk like theme, because I had this fantasy in my head and when I found party reports and stuff about this music it made me think that there was a movement of people out there manifesting my fantasies in real life, but I entered this game too late it seems, by the time I started going to these parties those ideals were dead and all that was left was this really vain bullshit.

I think what I'm looking for are the people who are connected to network23.org , but they don't make it into the south very often.
