how often do you change your needles?

i've never actually done so. I need new ones, i know...but just wondering..once i buy new ones (i'm gonna spend about $200 each) ..how long will they last?

iv had a pair of numark cs since january 2003 and they've been workin well for me since. just make sure to clean the 4 pin connectors after a couple years or else you might lose sound in your left or right speaker.

Ive only had to change mine because they have broken..
They should last you a LONG time if taken care of properly.

Both times they broke it was human error (not myself), not wear and tear damage that resulted in them breaking.

Mine have been around for 4 months and I've treated them badly, some stanton ones...

they actually do wear out! for me i replace mine every 9 months. also i think i read that when they are had it they can slowly ruin your vinyl than normaly. when you know you need to change them is when they start to pop and crack alot! sound qaulity goes also.

cheers
mattz

Worn down styluses wear your vinyl more.
The life of the tip all depends on how much weight you apply, scratching, backspinning, dust, gunk and whatever else you can think of. Look after them but dont keep them too long or your vinyl will suffer.

i change stylus 2 times a year, so after six months of use, i get myself some new ones and change the old ones, old ones i keep, so that i always a spare back up...

Posted by MERLIN on Jan-19-2006 04:03:

I was under the impression that just the stylus wears out?

Posted by TranceSpeeder on Jan-19-2006 05:22:

i just got new ones last week.

every 2-3 months

then again they're shure whitelabels that see A LOT of club use

Aren't they made of diamond or something, im which case they should last a while.

I'm a bit skeptical of how often styli "need" to be changed. I have two Ortofon Nightclubs that I bought at the same time over a year ago, and recently figured it was time to switch them out. So I bought one Ortofon DJ stylus, planning to get a second, but haven't yet bothered. I can't really tell any difference between the new DJ stylus and the old Nightclubs. In fact, even after a year of average use, the Nightclubs seem to sound a bit better.

I also keep my records very clean and brush my stylus between most play. I've noticed no major downhill of treble or deterioration of punchiness to indicate the Nightclubs failing. So perhaps it depends on how you take care of them. Constantly running an uncleaned needle over dusty grooves is probably not a formula for longevity.

true, if you keep your records clean and your styli clean, you shouldn't have any problems making your needles last, especially for bedroom djs

the whitelabels i mentioned on average see at least 20 hours of use a week in varying conditions with many different djs and styles

not a recipie for long lasting needles

Posted by Laszlo on Jan-19-2006 20:36:

I've had my White Label's for about a year and a half by now, and I still haven't noticed any significant change in sound quality loss....

Posted by sr126 on Jan-21-2006 05:44:

i change needles after every outdoor party. so every 2-4months. at home they see about 8-12hours of use a week, on squeaky clean records. i'm pretty stickler about keeping my records and needles clean. i noticed a lot people aren't very keen on vinyl care, especially after seeing some dj's play records that are so dusty they are actually light gray, instead of black. for some reason not many people notice/use the record cleaning kit i leave next to the mixer in the coffin. -so i don't want to use those needles again at home.
