Updated: 6:53 a.m. ET Jan. 18, 2006
AP - TOKYO - Gohan and Aochan make strange bedfellows: one's a 3.5-inch dwarf hamster; the other is a yard-long rat snake.

Zookeepers at Tokyo's Mutsugoro Okoku zoo presented the hamster whose name is a tasty rice dish in Japanese to Aochan as a snack in October, after the snake refused to eat frozen mice.

But instead of indulging, Aochan decided to make friends with the furry rodent, according to keeper Kazuya Yamamoto. The pair have shared a cage since.

Snakes are the dumbest creatures alive.
You keep that snake fed and good ole hammy-the-hamster doesn't have a thing to worry about...
Miss a feeding schedule and I can guarantee you, the hamster is toast...

Yeah, I'm pretty nervous for that hamster myself.

That's the cold reptilian brain for you. Only really concerned with the 4 Fs: Fighting, Fleeing, Feeding and Reproduction.

I've got ophidiophobia (fear of snakes) couldn't even look at that pic for more than a second. LOL @ the hamster's name.

When I was a kid, I went to the zoo a lot. One place there was this python. He was like the laziest python alive. Whenever I go there, he never moved. One day I noticed that there was a chicken in his cage. Few months later the chicken was still there.
Then on another visit the chicken wasn't there, but some feathers were.

Nature maybe crazy, but there are still some consistencies.

Snakes are one of the most adaptable, smart and agile animals alive. I have read a lot on snakes, and they are one of the most fascinating creatures ever. Although, for some darn reason, I will never go near or touch them (even non venomous snakes).

heh, here's a video I took of one of the snakes at the Ontario Science Centre.

Keep in mind my camera is tilted vertically so this snake is actually CLIMBING the plastic cage.

Fascinating creatures.
