why do poeple think others hate something casue its popular ?
ffs get a clue. stop using that phrase.
I almost thought for a second you were suggesting that people don't look down on others for enjoying listening to music that is popular.
But you aren't saying that...right?

man im lost
thread closed hahaha.. SUCKS cause i had a point i wanted to make that pisses me off and now i cant follow my own train of thought
People accuse others of hating on things when they make criticisms of songs that are popular even if they have legitimate reason to dislike it?

Originally posted by Col No, what you're saying is that when someone claims they "hate" a track, people will ignorantly accuse them of only disliking it because it's popular. I agree that this is a stupid assumption to make, and the most likely reason for the person disliking the track is because it's not to their taste or is just objectively poor. However, the way you worded it so bluntly, it was almost like you were implying that the elitism whined about by fans of commercial tracks is non-existent, and it certainly isn't. I would agree that it's too easy a comeback to say "you only hate it cos it's popular", but I believe some people really do voice their dislike for some tracks just to place themselves on a moral/intellectual high-ground. It does actually happen quite a lot around here, so let's not pretend it doesn't.
I seem to enjoy your theories and would like to subscribe to your monthly article.

It's a popular theory among internet debators that if you can trivialize your opponent's argument through an unrelated insult and/or other debasement, it invalidates the first person's argument.
Example:
"That track just doesn't reach a climax."
"Your mom just doesn't reach a climax."
The best idea is to just ignore those people. They probably just like the track because it's popular.

Gonna throw out a theory here. I call it the Identity theory of music.
Identity comes from many different outlets, music being one of them. People that use music as a source of identity for their self tend to navigate towards more less known bands, artists, and performers. They believe that the more obscure their music taste is, the more identity it gives them. These people always believe that their taste in music is better than others and usually they are correct because they are students of that particular genre. They are more knowledgable than first time listeners. These type of people usually have music going at all times throughout the day. They also are more about the actual music than the performer.
There are other people that dont place their identity on music so heavily. These people usually follow what is popular or what their peers listen to. So if they are 14 and their friends all listen to Dashboard Confessional and cry at night, they probably do too. These people are music fans but dont listen to as much as the above people. When this set of people find a group or artist they enjoy, they are die hard fans. No matter if that group or artist is horrible 5 years later they still follow them. They are fans of the performers and not of the music.
If these two types of people come together they cause problems. The first group takes it personal if the other group likes bad music because they are educated because it is who they are. The second group takes it personally if the first group hates their favorite artists. The second group then says to the first group, "You just dont like them because their popular."
This might be totally bs btw.

Originally posted by ambrus07 i think just about anyone on TA, especially from areas where trance isnt prevalent, are at least in part what you would call a type one individual. its what brings us together on many levels, this shared conspiracy. we know something the rest of the world doesnt, that trance is AWESOME and we'll talk about it and love it and the others will be left in the cold of their ignorance. so it is with any online community, i think. it makes us feel like we're a part of something big, yet subtle. naturally, we scoff at people who listen to popular music, because they have allowed themselves to be spoonfed whatever the media chooses for them. this far i agree with your theory.
quote:
Originally posted by ambrus07 the part where i think you oversimplify is where you lump everyone else into the second group. there is actually considerable overlap between the two. for instance, i have always loved Armin and always will even if ASOT becomes shit, because i am loyal to his earlier Djing and producing. In that, i am a type 2. but i also wont deny the scorn with which i flip though local radio stations, and i definitely have music on ALL the time. I think a lot of us are like that.

Originally posted by ambrus07 and i would also add a third type of music identity, the worst of the three; the dishonest listener. he's the type who listens always to to what is mainstream, but what is popular in his own local community, in this case, TA. he will jump on all the hate trains, and agrees in an argument with the winning side always; he listens to whatever genre makes him seem the most educated and sophisticated for that place and time, and he will scorn others for not doing so, calling them newbs. he maybe even fools himself into thinking he likes the music he listens to but knows in his heart he would quit listening to it if the really sophisticated people did too. i could go on but you get the idea. it's these people who are the root of most of the conflict we have on the site, and it's their personality type that causes most of the conflict in other arenas of life too. and it is all underlied by a deep deep sense of insecurity. but who are they? and how many are they?
