How come no one of any political party has made a big deal about this in the past. This would reflect the incompetence of all political parties in Canada. You dont just jump on the bandwagon when it is convenient or politically profitable to do so. Personally I think Canadian border guards should have been armed since at least 1950, and be trained in firearms. I'm really suprised they have not gone on strike in the past on this issue. Many border guards are very dedicated to their jobs and have done them very well with less pay and resources than they probably deserve. You need to pay well & properly equip them, since many international criminal organizers could easily try to bribe them with anything including allowing them to cross with illegal drugs, liquor, cigarettes, human traffic & weapons. It is good attention was drawn to this issue, I hope it results in some action.

Perhaps here in Canada we think (at least thought) that shooting everything and anyone is not our way of resolving issues, unlike you people to the south.

be a realist,

when the most worrisome people south of the border have no feelings toward such things, wouldnt you want your guards to be knowing?

i wont say all americans are the seediest of types, but protection is important.

and shooting everything isnt what the issue is about|

How come we hate each other so much? Lets face it Canada isnt that great neither is the US so truce!

I don't see how anyone can see this as an American / Canadian thing.
Yes they're at the border but wouldn't it be the same arguement had the murder suspect been coming from inside Canada to the States??

A side arm wouldn't be such a bad idea, we're not talking full out machine guns and stuff like you'd see at a LOT of other foreign borders...

I think its just the stupid people in each of our countries with hate or jealousy towards one ad other. Been to Toronto and people have said to me oh american thats too bad that whole country should be bombed and we take it over...then in America you have the people oh canadians are fags lets bomb them...and unfortunantly this stupidity is somewhat prevelant

I grew up in Canada, and I always assumed border guards had guns for their own protection. Crime is nothing new in Canada, in fact Al Capone had his own personal cottage on Pelee Island just over the Canadian border during prohibition days.

Comments about Canadian bravery, unfair.

Americans are no braver than us, if you think that then you are too caught up in false patriotism.

The fact is Canadian border guards HAVE IN THE PAST walked off the job and kicked up a fuss over this issue.

So Mr. "Typical Canadian Bravery", you sit there in your glass box, let me be chased by a posse of law enforcement, i'll run at you with my machine gun and you can try to aprehend me with your bare hands, k?

I do not have any hatred against the American people, but I do however have something against the way they resolve issues. Canada is not the most peaceful of places, but I do however think that our minimal contribution to 'the war against terrorism' stands for something and our respect for other nations and persons. I am in no way a serious patriot to this country, nor is this my home country to begin with. But I do have respect for Canada standing up against the forces of the U.S. which the rest of the world seem to be overwhelmed with and soon found to be following in their footsteps.

same as i see it right now the US are bullys and they always get their way on things. Not to start a democracy is it good or bad battle but why are we forcing all these random countries to take up democracy it hasnt really worked here that great look at the last two elections if some of us were more pationate there would've been riots
