Keyboard Music Master - truly amazing

I posted this here cuz I figured many of you would REALLY appreciate it. This guy does with 2 hands what we all do with full sequencers.

his hands move so quickly it's a blur... Just amazing!

thats crazy, go mullet-man!

Very impressive. Agree about the mullet though... that's awful

That's old video of Rick Wakeman.

Far from his best, but the man rocks.. On again off again keyboard player in "Yes". His younger son Adam is widely recognised as following closely in his footsteps (They even toured as "Wakeman with Wakeman".)

His elder son Oliver is also really good.

He started as a session musican on the London circuit, and has played on many classic records, including David Bowie's "Space Oddity" with an insane Stylophone solo (yea the Rolf Harris peice of crap for those old enough to remember!)

Rick is a serious influence on a whole genaration of Synth "Players" as opposed to sequencer gurus.

Also does a mean stand up commedy.

Anyway, don't dis the mullet it was some time ago.

This guy has forgotten more about advanced music than any 20 people on ths board combined.

BTW the non 4/4 time signatures may throw those who grew up with Ferry Corsten..

or those miserable about the sounds he's mostly playing a Roland D-50 a Korg SG1 for cying out loud (Circa 1987)

Since when were 4/4 time signitures the best ? I've heard and played a LOT of music that had odd time signitures. Take for instance the very well known, pretty cool Mission Impossible theme; its in 5/4 time. Not quite common time yet still very nice to listen to . Just keep in mind that 4/4 time doesnt guarentee the song to be golden either. Personally, that clip was a pretty nice progression that didnt hold a single time signiture nor a single tempo, but again, how many classical songs do that? If you can play like that live, I'd love to see video of it .

Cheers,
Zac

Hi IDarkISwordI,

I think you misunderstood me, where did I say 4/4 was best? I listen to all kinds of music e.g. 'Birds of fire' by 'Mahavishnu Orchestra' a Jazz Fusion song! If you check that out you'll notice a different time signature, I love that song and it's not 4/4. I like 'Times Like These' by the 'Foo Fighters' and so on... I just do not give a shit if someone plays hanging upside down, with their feet, in an 8/3 signature. To me it's just an illusion, a distraction from what I think is a crap song.

Even this post is a distraction from the fact that I offered my opinion saying I enjoyed the link (once) but wouldn't listen to it again because musically I don't like it. Then I'm indirectly told I have ONLY grew up on F.C. (Bull) and don't understand time signatures other than 4/4 (Bull). If you guys like it - fair enough, but I think it's crap!

Maybe I should have just said "Gosh, what a splendid little number, his dexterity is astounding and one must marvel at his clever use of tempo changes and alternating time signatures" But I didn't, I gave an honest answer which did not insult anyone. I am critical about the music and nothing but the music.

Yeah, except the way you worded it left the impression that 'wierd' time signitures tend to be much less popular than 4/4 time. You also pretty much assume, everything that guy plays is crap because you have not heard anything else he has created. This seems a little presumtuous on both points. I meant no offense, but maybe watch your wording a little.

Cheers,
Zac

And they say Belinda has the fastest fingers? This guy's got her beat, IMO. In speed and general skills.

He's also better looking, despite the mullet.

Props to Rick Wakeman!

The start of the video was pretty good sounding wise but I'll agree it sounded shit towards the end with the old west, saloon style piano stuff.

His other stuff is awesome tho. Try to find previews on allofmp3 etc.

Shame / Disagreement

I'm going to practise and learn to play that on my soft synths

Ghost Smilie Pink floyd

Pink floyd, Money, 7/8 time signature.

Heres an interesting tool that will show you the LFO Hz and milliseconds for any tempo and time signature:

Yea this guy was pretty outrageous, he shoulda stuck a drum machine in there somewhere

Wow great stuff!

For all keyboard music lovers I also suggest one of the best keyboard players of our time - Jordan Rudess who is also playing with Dream Theater. Check out the album: "An Evening With John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess". One of my top10 albums of all the time!!!

George: How would you describe your sound that you are performing on this album?

Jordan: The style?

George: Yeah.

Jordan: I would say progressive rock. The reason it has to come along with an explanation is now a days musicians and journalists have progressive rock confused with music that happened in peaks in the 70's. I would say that yes this music that I create, a big influence to me like Genesis and Yes when they were really peaking.

++ Wakeman FTW (Keyboard player in Yes.. Ok there were others too)

http://www.prog4you.com/Band_Interv...rdan_Rudess.htm

This has now gone seriously OT unless somone convinces him to make a trance track..

i dont think that this is at all OT. i was surprised by how many people in this thread, who (i think) would consider themselves musicians, or composers, or producers, or whatever) thought that the rick wakeman video was shite, or silly, or not interesting. composers of (any genre of) music have to try to listen and understand all the different stuff out there. granted, you might not like prog rock, but i think that one has to have an open mind, and learn to appreciate all the good stuff out there from all over the place. this doesnt mean that you should start composing prog rock stuff, but it might benifit your own writing and imagination if you listened to a little and kept an open mind. i think a great example of a trance group that incorporates all sorts of different stuff is infected mushroom.

by the way, jordan rudess is my favorite keyboard player. besides the music that he shreds, he really works a lot with his synth to get his sound perfect (to him, at least).

odd time signatures dont make a song great, but they do add an interesting element, just like odd harmonies, or odd melodies. and if one can incorporate all of that, and make it work, i think that song would be so much better, and so much more interesting than anything spun or prouced by our favorite djs. or you could just do the same old stuff over and over again.
