I've got an Alesis ra150 looking to upgrade it becuase it hasn't got enough punch for the Alesis monitor One mk2's I've got(which are 4ohm, so probably harder to drive).

The amp starts clipping at just above quarter on the volume and the bass response is fairly week.

Would i be better with something more powerful or maybe a hi-fi amp?

aye, yes, the ra150 is a bit little for those speakers.. fine for lower levels.. but you definitly want an amp you can run at less than 100%.

the mk2's handle 200 watts peak, 120 RMS.. you dont really need a PA amplifier, as most PA amps are much bigger and I assume you'd like something that isnt too bulky or heavy.

the ra150 pushes 75watts RMS per channel @ 4 ohms.

you could upgrade to a RA300.. because the alesis ra series are pretty nice amps. i use a ra100 to power some small monitors and love it for its noiseless fanless operation and quality sound. oh, and it doesnt even get warm

the ra300 pushes out 150 watts RMS per channel at 4 ohms, 30 more watts than your speakers need and twice your RA150. perfect!

another really good option, is the THX-certified marantz ma-500 monoblock amplifiers. as the word monoblock states, they are mono amps. you'd obtain two of them, and each one pushes 180 watts to 4 ohms. they are like long bricks, dont weigh much, and go down to 2ohm so you can parallel speakers. i've used these in bridged mode (two ma500's "ganged") to power subwoofers and pa speakers. these are a mainstay of the hifi/home theatre market, and are nice compact hifi amps that lacks bulk and high pricetags. most the hifi community considers them a great bang for the buck, and it certainly sounded as good as the other amps i've used.

if you were wanting to go "old school" (vintage) maybe a crown dc300 would suit the bill.. some people really like the old crown dc150/300 amps and i must say they are a nice piece
