-- Reformatting My Harddrive
Reformatting My Harddrive
theres so much shit on here, its just all fucked up. its so unstable, constant error messages, the amount it takes to start my computer, its just gotten too much. so ive decided to reformat while i have the day off today.
the reall bad part is going to be getting all my files onto back-up, which is going to take half the day just for my music. all my saved games, videos, blehh...
You know how to do things? Since when?!
You know you can't reformat Windows XP machines, unless you go straight into the command prompt from a bootdisk, make sure you have a bootable CDROM / DVDROM, also insure you have FDISK, and FORMAT.COM on floppy,

How to do it? Go out and get yourself a small HD, something cheap, and pull out the old one and put in the new one. In the BIOS, set the startup to read the CDROM first and pop in your XP CD. It'll auto-run and you go ahead and install XP yadda yadda yadda. Then when the install is fully complete, pop in the old HD in the Slave slot (change the jumpers) and make sure the BIOS runs off the XP installed on the new HD. You're old HD will be viewable as a drive (some letter:\) copy all your data over to the new disk and then format the old disk. Move all your data back to the old formatted disk and now you have an OS Drive (skratch disk) and a data disk w/out an OS on it. |
always create two partitions. one for the operative system and one for all your files. if the operative system malfunctions, you just have to reinstall on one partition, not the other one. and if you're short on hdd space, buy an external drive, as someone in this thread said earlier.
i sorted my shitness out 2 weeks ago & it's running so much better. dvd-writers ftw

thanks for the huge help. i think im going to buy an external harddrive, and import my files onto there. i was going to copy everything onto cd-r
Error messages suggest it could also be a memory issue. I used to have huge issues, replced the RAM under warranty and all the errors stopped...
I love reformatting my HD. The only thing I don't like is when I have over 10-15 gb of music and I have to burn it all that takes all day.
Lesson to learn is every one GB of music you fill your computer up with, burn it so
1)There is a backup of music(cd-r,dvd-r format)
2)All on the computer still to listen to
3)Computer ready to be formatted whenever you feel like it
And now from reading that you think I have done this method. Not yet
ir buy those external things
yea, im buying a harddrive. my windows explorer disappeared, which is another reason im reformatting. even when i run it, its not there. i have to use the task manager to open and manage my programs running.
i get paid today at least, but unfortunatly, there is a mardi gras type event going on here in tampa tomorrow. thousands of people at a parade, flashing boobies, partying all night. city-wide. harddrive's gonna have to wait. being so stoned u cant converse, FTW
i try to burn off stuff as soon as i've watched it so i never have too much i'd lose anyway in the worst case scenario.
its really useful to have two HDD, saves burning if you need to format
got a 80GB for the o/s, music, program files etc...
got a 40GB for anime, movies...etc but i try to keep it as empty as poss.
