normal mixer ---> video mixer?

just as the title says..

in theory, wouldn't a normal dj mixer be able to crossfade between two video sources just like audio? i mean, all the connections are RCA

there was a video mix posted on this forums but i don't have it anymore.

i very much doubt it would work!

any explanation why?

Um, whats the purpose of the Pioneer DVJ? Each DVJ is hooked up to a monitor and you mix not only the videos, but the songs.

i'm not asking about DVJs vs CDJs, i know normal CDJs can't play video. but what i'm asking is can a normal mixer mix video. and i'm just wondering why? different circuitry?

You apparently dont understand what I meant. Remove the music from the videos when they are playing in the DVJ. And instead of needing the headphones, you have the monitors that are plugged into each individual DVJ as a cueing function. Voulla, you can mix videos. Either way, mixing videos is absolutely pointless.

okay.. so my original question (no, apparently i don't understand your answer) can i still use a normal mixer for this? i agree, video mixing is pointless, but my friend wants to try out some DVJing at our next party so we're trying to figure out what it will take.

From my experience in audio/video, the answer would be no...just like you stated in your first post all the connectors are just rca...I'd assume you might be able to mix the audio of the video but thats as far as it would go. Now, a mixer that was just released

the numark AVM02 Professional Audio/Video Mixer w/ Effects

You can read more about it here: http://www.numark.com/index.html?ht...=overview&n=152

But DJ's like Sander K have to have some sort of medium to trigger the use of the video aspect of the DVJ - it might not exactly be a mixer, but its something that you can control what goes on.

Posted by Trogdor on Feb-01-2006 07:24:

Once again, the answer is no. It can't be done.

Even with something like the Pioneer DVJ-X1s, you still need a video mixer as well as an audio mixer. Or an audio mixer coupled with the Pioneer VSW-1 video switcher.

An AV connetion works diifferently to an audio connetion.
if you have a playstation or any other dvd/video player, you'll know there are three plugs, red, black, and yellow.
There are two plugs for stereo (B & R) and one for video (Y).
Not sure on the whole tech specs but it won't work.
Try plugin the playstation etc into your mixer - yellow cord - and see what it does.

Exactly. If you're talking about the RCA's you could hook up the red and white and be able to mix the audio from the video but there is no yellow for the video.

video signals are different to audio signals, they include timings and stuff, you cant just super-impose one video signal on another like you can with analog audio

Yup, and if you think about what happens when you use faders, you're adjusting the volume/strength of the sound. If you did that with a video signal, it would just send a weak signal which would make the signal harder to pick up on the monitor/tv. It would probably just get staticy until the signal goes out, not an actual fade out if you used the fader to fade it out.
