Roger Federer on his way to Pete Sampras
First time visiting the sports discussion page and to my amazement, no topics on Federer, though Ron Artest has one. Anyway, are people not going bonkers over what this man has been doing as of the last 2 years???
He is the first serious challenger to Pete Sampras' record, a record, when set, was thought impossible to beat by most people and only 5 years later it is in danger. This guy has one of the most phenomenal games and is able to change his style so well from hard to lawn to...whatever crushed tire rubber service the Australian Open uses.
He is already at 7, half way to Sampras' 14, and both by the age of 24 have almost identitical career titles and grand slam titles. I think Federer does not have to beat Sampras' record to be considered the best, he just has to win 11-13 but include a French Open or two to show he is more of an all around player.
Loved Federer against Bhagdatis who has become my future favorite with his charming personality and awesome game.
As much as i am awe of federers game ... im not so sure if he can be compared to sampras even if he beats every record sampras has set ... i say this simply because mens tennis has lost its depth ... besides federer there is not one consistent performer on the circuit which is why the womens side of the game is becoming much more appealing ... its like in the english premier league with 1st spot already taken and everyone fighting it out for second ...
back in sampras' day, mens tennis was so much more competitive with healthy rivalries ... at the beginning of his career there was edberg, becker, courier after which came agassi, rafter, michael chang .. those were the days when mens tennis was exciting because even though sampras was the favorite, people would never take it for granted that the pete would win the title outright unlike today where the shock comes if federer drops a set. The current number 2 in mens tennis is mr. frat boy lookalike Andy Roddick and hes very inconsistent ... federer reaches every final but each time he has a different opponent whom he wipes the court with and killing the word classic final from the mens tennis dictionary... i do hope that the quality that mens tennis was in the 90s comes back before federer gets old so we can really see what hes made of
My Biased Opinion states: Roger Federer is god Pete Sampras would only beat Federer if he grew out his white boy afro a bit more than he would have a shot

Pete Sampras is banging Veronica Vaughn, so he automatically wins at life.
well all i can say that Federer is simply outta this planet, and as you stated, very young, lets hope he stays safe from serious injuries which seem to be dominating womens tennis nowadays
I actually don't agree w/ the above comments on men's tennis currently lacking depth. I love pete and respect his game and as of now he is the best ever, with possible exception of Rod Laver.
But in the mid 90's rarely would an unseeded player catch the top seeds off guard. Granted Marcos Bhagdatis will quickly ascend the ranks, the fact that no one saw him coming and he was able to beat 3 top 10 seeds in a row is not something I would think happen 10 yrs ago.

tennis is fun to play, but man, is it ever painful to watch on TV.

roger federer has a long way to go.
they always say the first leg of a career are your best years, then the second leg shows how much true grit you got in your body.
why do you think it is taking tiger woods longer than everyone expected to pass jack nickalus for most majors won in golf ? of course we can blame it on distractions and boredom, but also because of the upcoming talent that is younger than him, and age.
i will say this. i cannot put federer up next to sampras, until i see federer win a match after hurling on the court and running to the restroom for the stomach cramps. hahahaha . sampras really put his body out to win a good number of games. he possibly could have stretched his career a bit longer, if he didn't push his body to the limits in his mid 20's.

Shut up fool
HEJA SVERIGE & BJRN
..although it was 5000 years ago.
i think due to his AGe alone, he will be the best tennis player of all time, so much time to shatter so many records, and it's common to hear " he hasn't lost a set in this tournament" it's mental to think that a player can be so dominant
