Smiley DJ Sony's MDR-V700

Damn these headphones make __the__difference__ man!!!!!

Definately recommend them! Do you guys use them??

Posted by Gluegun on Jan-17-2002 21:05:

They're okay if you get them for under $60, but, over that price, you can do better.

look, gluegun...... the one who actually decides if a pair of headphones is good or bad, is the one using them......
and fact is: none of those bad things said about those headphones is true!! I use a pair of MDR-V700's. the sound is so accurate, the quality is amazing, they are soft and comfortable around the ears, they don't make you sweat, and spinning with them is like a dream..... mixes do come more accurate because of the very accurate bass they have....
and about the flimsy, breakable plastic part, beleive me, if you take good care of them, they won't break or crack, and no cables get disconnected or whatever they say in those links you gave him.
so far, I only heard 4 comments by people against the V700.... one of them was half def, one heard classical music on them, one heard them at his friend's house, that EQed it to sound like shit, and the 4th..... well, re recommended me a pair of stanton headphones (pretty much makes my point....)......
I'm not saying other headphones are not good.... I bet even those MDR-V6 headphones you keep recommending are great (considering they are from the same series as the MDR-V700).... I'm just saying you should let others do the judging about their headphones. let's face it, no pair of ears are the same.......
P.S.
I didn't buy my pair of V700's cause Tiesto, and all the big DJ's use them. I just didn't beleive what's written in some website I don't even know, tried the headphones, and got amazed. I got them for about 90$..... and they were worth every cent to me.

Gyah! I own the MDR-V6's, and had heard the MDR-V700DJ's...

...and all I can say is "the mdr-v6 kicks the mdr-v700dj's stupid f**king a**...cuz sonyMDR-V6 is like WHOA! and sonyMDR-V700DJ is like BLECH!"

And YES, the MDR-V700DJ sucks for music listening even on heavy metal, hard rock and rap music.

i just ordered my mrd-v6's today.. im really anxious. i want them now !@$!@$!$DSFA:

Posted by Tony Morello on Jan-18-2002 00:57:

i sit here and ponder... why another thread dedicated to headphones...
especially when there is another headphone thread just a few spaces down... and 2 BIG threads a few pages back...

then i think... "some mod should grab all the headphone threads and combine them into one sticky thread"

then i break outta my ponder and say...

teh v700's do the job great, but not for the price that sony wants em for.

Posted by Exxtreme on Jan-18-2002 02:43:

Well... what can i say... i haven't heard the v6's to make a judgement about which one is better...

All i can say is i'm pretty much satisfied with the v700 i own now...! One point here is nice: this one is the best i've weared till date, AND if people say there is a pair of headphones even better, then well, i feel even better coz i'll enjoy the ones i have now and will have better headphones in the future!!

If the majority of djs use the 700's doesnt that mean they are good headphones? cause if they are spinning, they obviously need good headphones

I have the mdr7506 and they are okay, but there isnt enough bass. When these get worn out or broken, im getting the sony mdr700 or the technics headphones.

so if all the dj's used numark belt-drive turntables all of a sudden, would you use numark tables too?

i can't stress this enough... go out an test any and all headphones you can find with stuff you spin, or shit you listen to...
sure you can look at specs and frequency response, but the only way to find out if they work for you is to try them out

personally i prefer the pioneers for what i do... the v700's a nice and get teh job done, but are too expensive for my tastes... and i LOVE the sony v6 for my production work... the drivers in there are awesome!

Posted by Gluegun on Jan-18-2002 06:22:

Yea, like I said, the V700DJ's get the job done for under $60, but only if you get them for under $60.

yeah! great example!!! listening to rap and heavy metal on a pair of trance headphones....
I saw rap DJ's working.... most of them don't use the V700.... but almost all of the trance DJ's I saw use the V700.
and heavy metal sux ass so......
anywayz, as you can see, the V700 are probably more sutable for trance and other electronic music...... I only listen to trance through them so I can't compare........

Posted by Exxtreme on Jan-18-2002 21:12:

The impression that i get, reading all the posts till date about the subject, is that the v700 is really close to the v6 (regardless of which one is better), although the price is not that close, so that's why people see the v6 as a better cost-benefit relation..

Maybe the best DJs use the v700 coz they are more confortable and they must _need_ that when it comes to hours spinning, even if the v700's sound is not as accurate as the v6.

Posted by Gluegun on Jan-18-2002 22:26:

Um....guys, um, just so you all know, the V6's work well for, uh, anything. Shady was just using those examples cause he, like, must have thought you liked that, or something.

I dunno, he's wierd, but he knows what he speaks of, and he has a big heart.

Hypersonic, how would the V700DJ's be more suited for trance and electronic music? They are okay for Live, DJ mixing, but that's about it--and are only worth it for that if you get them for under $60. Listening to trance for enjoyment? Forget it. Mixing or creating or doing any "studio" work? Never. The V6's go way, way, lower, and, while they don't have so much bloated midbass as the V700DJ's, it *is* there, and you *can* hear and feel it--if any headphone was a high quality ear subwoofer, these are it. Also, the MDR-V6's are *really* comfy. A lot lighter than the V700DJ's, they fit more people's (rather than just some people's, as with the V700's) heads awesome, and you can mod them to have soooooo freaking comfy, "around the ear" earpads...

After this mod, especially, they slaughter the V700DJ's in comfort...

Actually, Exxtreme, soundwise, they are eons apart... They sound nothing alike. The V700DJ lacks deep bass and high treble (ie, they have sucky ACTUAL [not as-written/lied about by sony] frequency response, whereas the V6's go all the way down, and all the way up. Where the V700DJ's have boomy midbass, the v6's have accurate one...and when compared to the accurate, but still very present, up front, and physically impacting midbass of the v6's, the V700DJ's have no lead as far as beat matching go; far from, the V700DJ's artificial boom actually spreads the bass out over time, so you hear bass when it isn't there on the recording, something the V6 does NOT do. Also, where the MDR-V700DJ has depressed, mostly nonexistant midrange (ie, where music mostly is) and highs that roll off very quickly, the V6 has accurate, detailed mids and slightly bright (but only very slightly bright--not harsh but "detailed" highs) that go all the way up, allowing you to hear all the details of what you are listening to. Plus, the MDR-V6's, of course, go way, way, way, WAY lower than the MDR-V700DJ's...

The Koss KSC-35 tromps the MDR-V700DJ's IN SOUND QUALITY as well, with sparkly treble, great mids, and a warm, very deep, bass, which make music sound a lot better compared to the MDR-V700DJ's uber-boom, no deep bass, and rolled off highs. However, the Koss KSC-35's are not DJ headphones...they just sound better than the MDR-V700DJ's at $30... You *really* have to track these down and give them a listen!!

Also, if you want to LISTEN TO TRANCE with headphones that you dont want to use for mixing, you have sooooo many more options for the price of the MDR-V700DJ's! Not just the V6 ($62), which sound better, but also the Denon AHD-950 ($130, the Grado SR-80 (HELL YEA! $80!), the Grado SR-125 (even better!), and, if you have some money, you can get some of the BEST listening-to-trance-but-not-for-dj's headphones out there, like the (closed, big, hard to drive, $180) Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro's (these suckers ROCK!, or the (grado's are all open, medium sized, easy to drive), or the Grado SR-225 ($195), or the Grado SR-325 ($295), or the Sony MDR-CD3000 ($380)...

By the way, if you do not believe me about the Sony MDR-V6, the Koss KSC-35's, the Beyerdynamic DT250-80, the Sennheiser HD25's, or any of the other *non-sucky* headphones I mentioned, just search for the relevant product number at www.headwize.com or www.head-fi.org, or if you want to see stuff ripping the V700DJ's apart, you can also check that out too.

Posted by ShadySlim on Jan-19-2002 06:23:

I did listen to some trance music (I don't remember the title or DJ) on the MDR-V700DJ's... The V700DJ's sound like poop, too, on that particular track!! The "bass" doesn't stop when it's supposed to, but instead keeps on going for quite a bit longer! (None of my other headphones have that problem to such an extent.)

And for music listening, even some of Sony's smaller, cheaper headphones whoop the V700DJ's. (For example, the cheapo $25 A44L VITE's sound decent for their tiny size and low price - but you need an amp for those VITE's, or else they may sound shrill or murky.)

Posted by patticus on Jan-19-2002 09:29:

gluegun you'll be surprised to know that the v6's have practically no bass when comparing to the v-700s on a pioneer djm-600. i told you before that i could never directly compare the two, but i got the chance on new year's eve... once i realized what was wrong, i ditched the v6's for my friend's v-700s... there's just not enough bass happening on that mixer with those headphones.

*seeing as patticus is switching over to the 'dark side'*

Et tu, Brute? Then fall S.S.!

Posted by Gluegun on Jan-19-2002 15:21:

Patticus.

Please explain why you choose...

Boomy, exaggerated midbass, and little low bass

to

Slightly exaggerated, "up front", clear, tight midbass, and deep bass.

Hmm... I _really_ wouldn't go that far if i wanted some credibility... First of all, it does not sound like poop; secondly, i don't believe they'd sell a BMW for the price of a ordinary FIAT.

Again, i feel awesome with my V700 headphones (they're the best i've tried till date - although i never bothered seeing the brands of the ones i tried) and there's no argument that'd make me feel otherwise, thanks.

Posted by Gluegun on Jan-20-2002 00:27:

Hey, here's a good, cheap way to figure out moderately decent sound.

Go to Best Buy, or any store that sells cheapy headphones,

and pick up the Koss KSC-50's for $20, and listen to them.

They are pretty good, fairly well rounded, cheap... the lesser progeny of the KSC-35's.

Actually, it's the other way around - the V700DJ's are like buying a cheap Volkswagen for the price of the most expensive BMW.

Posted by Gluegun on Jan-20-2002 00:46:

Oh, BTW, in Japan, the V700's should be closer to the price of a cheap VW. It's because of exchange rates and such; I ranted about it in an earlier post.

Posted by patticus on Jan-20-2002 01:13:

well basically after hearing the v700s on that mixer, i couldn't mix with the v6s because there was simply way too much treble. NO bass.
it made it sound weird

if i didnt try out the v700s then i probably would have been fine, but my friend was complaining about my headphones

Actually it IS NOT the other way round...

_Again_: i don't believe they'd sell a BMW (you sound as if the A44L VITE are like the top of the line, the BMW, when it must not be) for the price of a ordinary FIAT (that is, an ordinary headphone, $25).

That means: the A44L VITE is not the BMW that you're saying, otherwise they wouldn't be that cheap. Got it now?

Posted by Eugene on Jan-20-2002 02:48:

let's talk about the Koss ones.

I'm a beginner DJ who mixes AS WELL AS listens to Trance. So, note that both of these are important for me.

Now, I'm a poor student and can't afford to spend $100 (not to mention anything above that) on headphones, EVEN THOUGH I realize they're important for mixing. I'd much rather use that money to get vinyl.

YET, I would like to get quality headphones that are good for mixing (currently in the basement ) - e.g. blocking out outside noise, strong and CLEAR bass & drums; as well as pure listening. What is a really good option?
