ll of my WTF happened to me?!?!?!

Just this past Saturday I was driving to Toronto to see one of my favorite acts...B&J. I had my CD case full of my favorite uplifting trance with the thoughts of my hands in the air all night. I got to the club and started the show off see Junkie XL (and my god was this man GREAT! highly suggest seeing him live). The next act was the lizaed man himself...the set was so bad i found myself wondering around the other rooms in the venue to happen to stumble in this house room. I was blown away...up until this point i HATED house, jungle, breaks, etc. Trance was my "calling." Have all the ASOT, Tiesto, Ferry, PVD, etc cds possible. I found myself in this room for the next 4 hours dancing non-stop. I didnt even see B&J!!!

I couldnt get the pounding beats out my head all drive home. When I got back at 10 in the morning, i immediatly started to do my research. Turns out the Steve Porter was in the room (i learned that he is one of the better acts). So i went and got my rest and the next day I went out on a spree and spent over $200 in CD's mostly Renaissance and GU stuff. WOW!!!!! Where the funk have I been. This stuff is sooooo much better. I cant even listen to that fluffy trance anymore....I deleated all my ASOT to make room for some livesets from Porter, Hernan, Danny T, etc. One freaken night this happened!

So I was wondering two things, you people think this is a phase, or has my taste changed completely. Does this happen to other people!?! And also, I was wondering for some direction. I guess you can say (jsut based on what i have read online) that i like progressive house, hard house, poterhouse (that style at least). I dont really like the funky stuff, just hard, pounding sounds. Where do I start and who else do I listen too?!!?

Thanks for reading...

What an enlightenment.

You just keep doing your think man.

hard house is NOT what you're looking for...stick with progressive house and although you say you don't like it funky house...steve porter is awesome, but he also does play a lot of funky house. you're probably thinking of disco house and not funky house when you said you don't like it...

I think your tastes change over time. Some people get tired of a certain style. It's good to branch out and like new things. I've heard it happen to many people. In my case, I still like the same stuff, just look for stuff that sounds a little different, more sophisticated or mature. I have enjoyed both prog house/trance, various styles of house (like electro, tech, deep, vocal house) with the uplifting and melodic stuff as well. I'm not really into the stereotypical trance with those saw wave trance riffs anymore, the really over the top stuff. Sure some of that stuff is fun to listen to, but it's good to branch out and explore some other styles. I've been getting into Sander K's and James Zambiela's style, so I guess you can say I'm into the elctro house type stuff. I also really like breaks, esp progressive and electro breaks. But I still enjoy good uplifting trance too. You can like both styles, nothings wrong with that.

Many people have difficulty understanding that - for some reason.

welcome to manhood

in the next right-wing extremist uprising, instead of books on the fire, it'll be ASOT cd's.

trust me.

what would you suggest man?

check out the Fabric series

Glad to hear you had fun with Porter man! If you're talkin' about the gig in Toronto I was watching the live stream and was blown away. This happened to me a while ago, after I heard Lucien Foort @ Innercity 2004.
I realized house was just so much better in some ways. I still like good trance, but don't inundate myself with the stuff anymore. Over time you'll probably like more and more things. Just be open minded

Saeed Younan! Tribal dark shexhaaayyyy house. John Digweed's Fabric 20 is mint.

/me np: James Holden - Essence @ Flex Vienna 10-12-2005 [194:19m/128Kbps/44KHz]

^^ this set I'm listening to right now kicks majorness in the ass deparment. Sick progressive ambient whatnot.

Danny Howells, D-Nox & Beckers, Steve Lawler (Lights Out series owns)... and check out some tracks by Pablo Roma (as seen in my custom status) who is some austere producing entity whose made a bunch of tracks all of which I love. Check out the Pole Folder album Zero Gold, and another album worth checking out would be Moshic's Salamat album which came out today, I need to get it.

Another hint, go to V-Sag's website and become a member to his forums, you can get a bunch of great prog house sets there for free.

God, there's so much good stuff in the prog house realm. I just got into it myself.

It'll help if you become a member at tribalmixes.com (for some reason tribalmixes.com has not been working for me for the past two days, anyone else experiencing this problem?) and themixingbowl.org too. Great set torrent sites.

I've branched out into a bunch of other genres (been into psy for awhile now, now starting to apreciate house/tribal and hard house). But trance was my first love, and always will be.

If you like Hernan Cattaneo you'll also like DJ Sultan.

Check his mixes out on his site:

changing your style isn't wrong or bad - if anything you've probably widened your musical appreciation pallet.

but i'm wondering why you deleted allthe stuff that you used to like? Couldn't you reach some kind of middle ground compromise on your hard drive for both your new stuff and the old stuff? my tastes have changed a few times; but i still keep old stuf - just cause it is nice to listen to every once in awhile.

Yup, same here. I still love to bang out some loud, high-BPM PvD sets, or thrash about to som Digital Blonde. I still like Tiesto's Nyana, imagine that. So I wouldn't go deleting all your old files, just keep the ones you really, really enjoy.

You gotta love how progressive house gets thrown around like a fuckin baseball in a gino toss. wtf, stop using PROGRESSIVE HOUSE to describe any other form of music other than trance, its so lame its almost as dirty as the word trance now.

Adding the prefix progressive to a genre has always been fucking lame.

However,

Sometimes proggressive house are the only two words that come to mind when describing some music, especially a lot of the GU cds..

Posted by I <3 NY on Feb-10-2006 04:58:

Im goin nuts here with the "progrssive" but im glad that you are finally growing out of the kindgergardner style edm, and into the more refined tastes among our faithful masses

Posted by cherrybarry on Feb-10-2006 05:41:

I used to listen to trance exclusively, but the past couple months, I've discovered more genres that I like...house, progressive house, minimal techno, electro, tribal, funky house, deep house, disco house, chicago house, hard techno, tech-house, etc...

Trance will still be my first love, but now, it's good to truly be a fan of EDM.

lol that sounded really cheesy
