PVD Talks About Ableton Live & Serato..
Found this on another board. Sounds kinda confusing.

| Trance.nu: When you are DJ-ing, youre using Ableton Live a lot. What do you like so much about it? Paul van Dyk: Im not just use Ableton Live, I use a combination between Scratch Live and Ableton. I have 2 computers with me and Im basicly using Scratch Live with time coded CDs. That signal actually goes into the interface of Ableton Live. Within Ableton Live I have the possibility then to do the craziest things, because its a combination of a DJ program with a sequencer program. That obviously enables you to sort of re-arrange the whole track. Its much more actually like playing live then rather DJ-ing in a normal way of how some people understand it. Its crazy all the possibilities you have and the options of being creative they are just endless! Electronic music has always been about breaking the boundaries on the creative level as much as on the technological side. And by using those elements of course and these programs and computers and stuff, you can actually push the boundaries again! It makes something even more special. Because of the set up, I can never ever play a track the same way, because its always somehow different, its always a different thing. That makes it even more unique on one hand, but it also makes it more special to the actual event itself. For example, I can take elements of the track away and just play the strings, the drums or whatever. Trance.nu: So you have special CDs for that, since you can remove some parts? Paul van Dyk: No, its a DJ program and it works a bit the same as Final Scratch. With the older systems you had a beeping noise, a time code, on the vinyl. That time code was actually translated through an interface. So the computer program knows exactly where the time code is. And then you hav a program, like a window, where you use something like a virtual card slot. So you can load a track into it. That is similar with Scratch Live, but instead of using analog vinyl, I use a CD with a time code. And that goes into the one computer, usually on my left side. And then this signal, instead of going into the mixer to be mixed, goes straight into the other computer through another interface thats connected with the other computer on the right side, which drives the Ableton. Its quite a tricky set up, but its great! Its an amazing way of doing what I do now! |
2 mac's... i'd love to see that set up, but, so much for traveling light
Way to make things more complicated mr PvD!
Ok, maybe I am just high or something. But I still don't get what he is actually doing here. I have watched him live with this setup, and it is pretty crazy.
So there is a timecoded cd in the CDJ's and that is controlling the track that he brings up in Serato. Then it is brought from Serato into Live. Now what? How does that do anything for you other than now you can match other songs and things in live into that. Which you could do with live anyways all by itself. hmmm.. Maybe I am missing something here.

| Originally posted by RobertStern So then, all he is really doing is playing any track he wants through Serato. The adding effects and layers, samples, etc using Ableton. Thats it..? If so, pretty cool. You have access to any track in secords using Serato and with Ableton, you have a plethora of possibilities to add in whatever you want. How the hell do you sync ( beat match ) the stuff your doing in Ableton to everything else? hmmm |
i have a hard time understanding and logicaly believing that you can take away just drums... or cymbals... or anyone element away if its a wav or mp3 file... theres just no way... its all ONE LAYER.
take a jpg image vs a photoshop PSD file for example.... you can alternate, hide, and remove layers in photoshop with a psd file.... you cant do that with a bmp or jpg image.
no back to music, how is it possible for pvd to do this if they are "normal cds"... sorry... but they have to be special layered audio files in order to do so... he's a dj... not a magician!
I understand the setup...but what is the point of using serato when you can play and edit tracks in live? why is serato needed? also, just as junior said, how can you take away single pieces of a song? hmmmm...
Taking parts or samples off a song can be done.
Im not sure if there's a plug in for Live, but I know there's software that does it. I have one software that when you open a track, it breaks it down for you. It will give you the drums, kicks, hi hats, and just about everything else. I havent tried to take a melody, but I have taken kicks and hi hats off nomral MP3s.

Wooday that picutre you took of PVD at the Mayan, the lap top to the left, what program is that?
The left is Ableton and the right is Serato Final Scratch.
hahahah the left is SERATO SCRATCH LIVE (Made by Rane & Serato), the one on the right is ABLETON LIVE.
BTW, I didn't take the pict., Drew did.

Is that the same as final scratch?
Another question, so that lap top on the left, is that just plugged into the mixer directly?
