Canadian laws are stricter than singapore

ive been doing research for my upcoming trip which includes singapore.

Some shocking things about that city compared to our own.

Singapore is known for having some obscenely strict laws. Everyone in the world knows this. So lets compare a few laws.

Smoking is prohibited:

In singapore everywhere but nightclubs and casinos

In Toronto EVERYWHERE

Drinking must finish at:

no set time in singapore

2 am in Toronto

Radio/television

Singapore does not regulate which stations can be viewed but can censor pornographic images when deemed necissary

Canada's government decides which foreign channels can be watched as well as what formats may exist in canadian markets. Everything you watch or hear has to be approved. The government also censors pornography.

Chewing gum:

Singapore - Not permitted for sale in convenience stores but may be purchased at the pharmacy or imported for personal use. Contrary to myth, Chewing is not against the law

Ontario - Can no longer be purchased from school cafeterias or machines

Something to think about

Instead of making your thread title "Canadian laws are stricter than singapore", it should be "Laws that are stricter in Canada than Singapore". Your thread title is misleading. It makes it seem that all laws in Canada are stricter than in Singapore, which is obviously not the case.

while we're being random - in California; a city ordinance states that a $500 fine will be given to anyone who detonates a nuclear device within city limits.

I agree with all of these laws.
- I hate smoking in public (I would never go into a club if there were smokers lighting up inside. Never.)
- I don't see a problem with last call.
- Honestly, I think public broadcasting should be regulated (I mean... TV is already turning into a cesspool of shitty programming; it would be much worse if those laws weren't there).
- And with respect to chewing gum being banned in schools... it makes sense to me.

please !!!!!!!

i read in the newspaper today, man who raped 6 or 7 years old girl and beat her up and choked her, told her he killed cecilia and 14 more girls while raping her and beating her up, today that man got 4 years in prison. he got 10 but cause of "double time", and "fairness" that man will be out of prison when she is 14.

at the same time, 6'7 and 350 lbs man who said "i cant help it, im addicted to smell of young boys", who raped one or two young boys, who was in jail then released, THEN caught stalking some 11 years old boys, sent to jail again, and now he's getting released again.

not to mention man who raped 12 years old girl for 3 fucking years (since she was 9), then tried to rape 18 MONTHS old baby (eighteen MONTHS, 18 fucking months) and when baby's father confronted him about that he slashed his throat, and he got not even 6 years......

and here are you talking about bubble gums???????

y'all talking about smoking and drinking and whatnot ?

heres an idea, when there get 2-3 E's and walk around with that in your pocket. you aint got balls to do that cause you know if they bust you you are FUCKED UP for a looong time.

canadian laws stricter????

we have child murderers walking among us, and you're telling me to "think" about fucking bubble gum??????

please man, i really respect your input here but what you wrote here makes me wanna.... i dunno, scream, cry and yell at the same time.

think about it????

i would rather have my kids grow up in singapore than here

Posted by ghetto_fab on Feb-11-2006 18:25:

You think laws are strict in canada and singapore

Here is a little bit of laws here in the state of utah

1. Birds have the right of way on all highways if caught running them over is a fine or jail time.

2. You must have identification to enter a convienence store after dark.

3. Daylight must be visible between partners on a dance floor

4. Recieving oral sex can lead to jail time. (sorry guys no bjs here for ya) lol

some of the stupid laws here!

as Vertigo is pointing out, it's not just about the LAWS...it's about the CONSEQUENCES when you break those laws...i.e. what amounts to "justice".

how about a comparision of typical sentences, Jay? (I'm asking, because all I know are the obvious media cases...like being caned for vandalism, being sentence for spitting gum on the ground, etc).

FTR caning is done by professional martial artists who are quite good with that stick. (to minimize bodily harm ie ruptured kidneys and stuff)

that depends on what you consider quality of life. I consider a good quality of life to be having the freedom to live it how you want to without government coddling.

On that we both rate pretty low.

Sentences are stricter in singapore for sure. We need tougher sentences here for serious crimes and we need to loosen up on "social crimes" as in drug possession, smoking etc. (this is even coming from a non drug user and non smoker over here)

why dont you move there? weaksauce thread!

Posted by Jayx1 on Feb-12-2006 01:13:

ill be moving..

when and where is to be determined

Posted by JB1 on Feb-12-2006 01:21:

LOL at this thread.

Nothing can be compared until the experience is there.

Posted by Spam on Feb-12-2006 01:23:

The fact that we focus on retarded things like smoking laws while rapists are getting away with what they do is what blows me away. I'll bet Singapore CAN focus on smoking laws and bubble gum BECAUSE they already have strict enough penalties for rapists.

Posted by KaiLee on Feb-12-2006 02:56:

Yeah and Singapore is also one of the few countries in the world where you can be thrown in jail if a cop finds you to be on drugs......

Death penalty for trafficking?
Fine if you don't flush the toilets?

I really liked Singapore, and didn't find it to be strict there....the clubbing is amazing, but Canadian laws are definitely not stricter than Singapore's.....certain rules may differ, but remember this is two different parts of the world you are looking at.
