Official TOTA 2006 Olympics Thread

I'm sure there'll be a number of conversations in the next few weeks about the Olypmics so I figured I'd start a thread, keep all comments in one place.

Here's the link to the CBC coverage of the Olympics --> CBC

And Olympic Games offical website --> Torino 2006

I only saw a few minutes of the Opening Ceremonies - pretty cool as far as I saw.

Canada already won one gold - Jennifer Heil in Women's Moguls.
wooo hoooooo - Canadians are starting off really well.

Women's hockey just beat Italy 16-0 (although in the NHL it's good sportsmanship to stop scoring goals after you're ahead by like 6 or 8 goals, but here points can mean a lot so I guess they want to get as many as possible!)

Anyone know anyone personally in the Olympics this year.
I know of a guy, Jeffrey Buttle (figure skater) who is doing UofT Chem Eng part time as well as winning nationals and going to Olympics! - much respect for that.

I wonder if there will be controvery again this year in the skating competition.

Olympics are always fun to watch.

***** CANADA'S MEDAL COUNT *****

GOLD 5

SILVER 8

BRONZE 5

TOTAL = 18

Most definitely.

A medal count as part of your post would be nice.

I'm a former national junior team biathlete and have a couple of friends competing - Robin Clegg didn't do so hot today in biathlon, but it is a tough field.

I will be up at 4am to watch Becky Scott in the 15km pursuit - She should rock - hopefully won't have to wait 2 years to get her gold medal this time around!

HAHAHHAA

but i agree

FIRST PERIOD in the womens game: 7-0 Canada over Russia!!!!

Canada's defence is decimated, no Neidermayer, no Jovanoski, now Blake and Proger are hurting.. Phaneuf should have been named to the Taxi squad.

That's ok. I'm not sure how often I'll be checking it.

Posted by naillil on Feb-13-2006 14:09:

I heard on the radio that the Canadian Women's team is receiving hate mail and coming under fire for racking up the scores in games saying it's unsportsman-like. Afer two games, they are 28 - 0)

People who don't understand the game should jut keep their mouths shut. What are they going to do?? Play a half ass game just so they don't score too many points and hurt their opponent's feelings?? They've been training all year to win and they need to keep the momentum and energy up so they are prepared to beat whoever it is in the finals.

Plus, in the event of a tie (wins/losses/ties) the team with the MOST POINTS would advance. It's the Olympins - they can't take any chances!!!

Posted by yankeeBaby on Feb-13-2006 14:28:

I love the fact that american TV is finally showing events in which OTHER countries win.....I swear the last few olympics, they only showed an event in which we medaled and there were so many things we missed!

BUT WTF is with them not showing womens hockey? Um hello they show an entire cross country skiing race (BORING!!) but dont show hockey??? BOOOOOO

Posted by simms327 on Feb-13-2006 15:32:

Alysin Forsyth (sp?) tore here ACL, and she was a good chance for a medal in women's downhill, plus shes from nanaimo BC (yay islanders!)

this is shitty news!!!

Posted by Euphorica on Feb-13-2006 15:55:

yeah I caught that this morning. at least her fall didnt seem to be as bad as the others. Damn they were dropping like flies!

Posted by ChemEnhanced on Feb-13-2006 18:57:

Well it looks like our medal hopefulls keep bowing to the pressure. Mr. Witherspoon finishes 9th overall in 500 m speed skating and he was almost a lock for the gold.....I am so affraid for 2010.

I guess TigerLily won't have any problems keeping the medal count updated.

Anne Abernathy, known affectionately as "Grandma Luge," has withdrawn from the women's event at the Torino Olympics because of a broken wrist.

The 52-year-old crashed near the end of the track in Cesana, Italy, during training Sunday morning and was taken to hospital. The International Olympic Committee was informed on Sunday night that Abernathy will not participate in her sixth Olympics.

Abernathy, who competes for the U.S. Virgin Islands, made her Olympic debut at the 1988 Calgary Games. Though never a serious medal contender, she is popular with fans and fellow athletes.

In training for the Torino Games, Abernathy, a cancer survivor, had worn a green racing suit. Her red helmet was a tribute to women over 50.

"I kind of look like a Christmas tree," she said after a practice run on Friday. "It's a big deal for a lot of women that someone over 50 is going out there and doing it."

with files from Associated Press

This is incredible - 52 years old and in the Olympics... impressive. Too bad she got hurt though.
