TranceAddict Track of the Year Winners

2006 - BT - The Antikythera Mechanism

Congratulations to BT on winning this year's TranceAddict Track of the Year Award! Despite the concerns brought up by my fellow TAs, winning the award by beating out 100s of nominations and dozens of quality tracks in the polling period is a testament to BT's skills and abilities as a producer. Well done!

Previous Years' Winners
2005 - Perasma - Swing 2 Harmony
2004 - Randy Katana - In-Silence
2003 - Motorcycle - As The Rush Comes
2002 - Solar Stone - Solarcoaster
2001 - DJ Tisto - Suburban Train
2000 - Delerium feat. Sarah McLachlan - Silence

I think 2004 was a battle between Whiteroom and No One On Earth?

Those are the tracks of the year?

That's sad. And that's terrible.

I think there was a TOTY poll for 1986 and 1987 if I'm not mistaken.

2004 - Randy Katana - In-Silence
2002 - Solar Stone - Solarcoaster
2001 - DJ Tisto - Suburban Train
2000 - Delerium feat. Sarah McLachlan - Silence

All great tracks, If anybody doubts it, they're either not a trancenazi (cinos), someone who liked the tunes that got beaten, or someone who doesn't have a clue

2005 - Perasma - Swing 2 Harmony
2003 - Motorcycle - As The Rush Comes

These 2 are absolute pap.

I don't understand how a track like Perasma - Swing 2 Harmony can win a best of the year poll. I don't agree that it's total rubbish, it's a reasonably effective melodic, progressive kind of trancer - but it's far from ground breaking . There are numerous tracks far more deserving of winning that quite frankly are far better songs. How does something like this actually get the amount of votes that it does?

Posted by Sykonee on Feb-13-2006 15:38:

Recognition. That's all it needs to be voted. Unfair? Of course, but this is what happens in public polls.

Posted by RapidFire on Feb-13-2006 15:43:

the first two are true classics and well deserved winners. the rest are either average (solarcoaster, In Silence) or utter shit (ATRC, Swing).

overall its a nice example of the decline in quality trance since 2000.
going from brilliant to average to poor.

Part of it IMO is the way the polls are done.

Everyone picks their favourite tracks and the ones with the most votes goes to polls.

But how many people look at the final poll and say "I'll vote for this track because its the best track of the year", and how many say "I'll vote for this track because its the best out of the 5 on the poll".

Perhaps the final poll should have 'Other' as an option. Would weed out how many people are actually voting for the track.

Yeah that is how I felt making my vote. A couple good tracks in the list but nothing I would consider TOTY. Same with the tracks listed for previous years. Good tracks but nothing outstanding.

I see what you're saying, but what I can't get my head around is how something which is as derivative and unremarkable as Swing 2 Harmny gets that recognition and popularity in the first place. Trance isn't a mainstream genre like hip hop or something like that where there's support for more commercial and unoriginal stuff from a plethora of large media outlets and dedicated radio stations. Obviously there's stuff like ASOT that tends to screw up things but nothing on such a major level that would explain why stuff like Motorcycle and the like end up winning.

1986: New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle (Factory Records)
1987: U2 - With Or Without You - Island Records, can't find the thread for this one

Damn those trance radio shows. They always go and mess things up!

ya, 2000 and 2001 are good, i dont know about 2002 - 2004 but 2005 was absolutly, horrable, the top 10 of 2005 were actually all bad in my opinion

Unremarkable to you, perhaps, but to whoever voted for, it was the best thing they heard in 2005. Of course, it does depend on how deep into trancedom they dug that year. I'd hardly imagine those who voted for this track have heard, say, Snarling Zraw by Misted Muppet.

Always remember that most folks aren't that obsessive when it comes to searching music. They'll go with what's the familiar acts, shows, & sounds, indulge in it, then carry on -they haven't the time nor the motivation to seek out that obscure bit of minimal melodic psytekk released out of some backwater ski-shop in mid-Norway. Give them the opportunity to vote what's the best and, through their sheer numbers alone, their opinions will always outweigh the hardcore fans (whom have found truly amazing material through their dedication to The Search).

i'll never understand why swing2harmony was so popular with the people on these boards. this is one track that i listen to and it makes me cringe

and as someone stated before you can definitely see the decrease in quality of the TOTY as the years progress.

Yeah I forgot to mention, Swing to Harmony annoys me as well.

I think the point is that there have been more obviously popular tracks (many of them from big name producers) that should, by logic, have won on recognition. Swing 2 Harmony was hardly the most high-profile trance record of 2005.

Posted by Sykonee on Feb-13-2006 21:33:

Hmm... Maybe it was 'strategic voting' then?

Honestly, I haven't a clue where the TA's heads are at. I didn't even pay attention to that poll, so I don't know what the nominations were. (didn't really listen to much new trance in '05, so there'd be no point in participating without an informed background... although that doesn't seem to stop others )
