About element

The building was originally conceived as a bank and since then has served as Jasper Johns’ studio in the late 70s, as well as serving several half-lives as a club under different guises for the last three decades, including a renowned Goth club in the 90s. The original architectural structure of the bank is still in tact, but after an extensive renovation, the 10,000 square foot tri-level venue has a completely new interior. The new venue element features an artful, elegant decor with textured woods, slate, copper and paper. Interior designer Robert Stettner incorporates natural elements like pounded bark, jagged slate and zebra wood accents, creating a natural understated elegance.

The 305-capacity Main Room is flanked by a full-length curved shimmering brushed steel and concrete bar with handmade deconstructed mirrorball landscapes designed by the owners. This is centered by a 40 x 60 ft wide plank oak hardwood dancefloor. This main space is powered by a state of the art 37,000 watt EAW Avalon Series soundsystem that is controlled throughout multiple zones inside the club to create sweet-spots on the dancefloor and chill-spots in the lounge and 2nd floor. An adjacent lounge, entitled the Fire Lounge for its fiery paintings provides additional seating areas with carved low wooden tables.

The Mezzanine and Balcony (105-capacity) are illuminated by custom designed bamboo cage LED chandeliers that are part of seven, separately controlled LED installations throughout the club designed to control the mood and ambience of the night, including an entire wall of light behind the DJ booth. Each area provides high back couches and seating areas with a fully-licensed bar an a catwalk to the DJ Booth with state of the art equipment and lighting console.

The 150-capacity downstairs Vault is a cozy intimate event space with a dedicated sound system, DJ booth, full service bar, and prep kitchen for catering needs. The underground space can be utilized independently or as an annex to the main floor event. The Vault may also be accessed by a private entrance for those who require the proper discretion and enclosed within the Vault are three curtained private listening rooms with individual volume controls, providing the ultimate, quality club experience.

This spring/summer 2006, element will be adding live performance/band capabilities and a kitchen serving a small menu and light appetizers.

Gauging from the lineup this weekend and the announced ones in the next couple of months, this doesn't look like a trance club.

Depending on how my week at work goes ( ), Thursday could be an option. Tommie Sunshine played the night that I saw Evil Nine at Canal Room and was pretty enjoyable. Definitely lots of attitude to his stuff and he kind of resembled Rob Zombie that night. That electrodisco punk label definitely works with him.
