benny benassi style reverb..

how does he get that delay on the reverb, then it comes in with a fast attack.. heard its with compression but how? wandii had it down on his preset.. anyone have that to share or now how its done? like how the reverb isnt there when the bass is playing but it if you stop playing for a second it comes in.. anyone know how plz!

uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i think you should try editing your post because thats a verrrrrrrry confusing read.

Posted by Storyteller on Feb-14-2006 09:48:

it is not and it is simple.

Take a high ratio
and a low threshold.
A reasonable release time for the compressor to stop compressing.

This way reverb will be almost inaudible when compressing the bass and it will come up after compressing the bass. That's it.

I'm also curious about that. Do you mean sidechain ducking the fx-bus with the bass? Which reverb do you mean? The one of the bass itself?

Posted by Storyteller on Feb-14-2006 11:06:

it is simple.

You have a this chain:

Synth >> Reverb >> Compressor >> Output

you put a decent ammount of reverb on the bass, and compress it quite firm. This way the reverb is being pushed out when the bass plays, but when the bass sound has ended the reverb will pop up as the compressor is stopping to compress because the volume is beneath the threshold.

it's called GATED REVERB, almost all decent fx units/ synths have that kind of reverb. And yeah, there is a compressor used as well...

i was talking about gated reverb one day but got taken off track.

so what is it really? cos in reason the reverb unit has gated reverb.

in context to reasons reverb unit if you can explain how it works!
what happens to the sound when it reaches the threshold?

hope it makes sense!

you mean to apply this compressor to the reverb only right? how do i do that in cubase.. a reverb fx channel with a send to the bass? ... and apply the compressor to the fx channel?

No sends needed.

i can still hear the reverb alittle.. i thought the idea was to compress the reverb by itself and side chain it with the bass to duck it out while bass is playing, thats how wandii's preset was i think

the gated reverb is produced cutting off the time before of response of a "reverberator". Reverberation is produced after a certain time after the sound - gate time. Some fx units allow to controll how to cutt off that time, abrupt or slowly. Unfortunately i don't use Reason, dunno its reverb unit to explain exactly. Gate threshold reports on volumes of your sound. It's more difficult to explain what happens than to hear if you play with thres

That's possible too, I never use sidechain though.

so is this a good way of making your percs feel more alive, by using gated reverb?

Posted by Storyteller on Feb-15-2006 09:15:

there are better ways for that. Look for the pianoverb vst, makes percussion sound less static and the plugin itself is absolutely free

yes, gated reverb is used mostly in perc arangements But pay attention to "harsh" because the listener wants vibe not a crowded sound.

Posted by mzvirbulis on Feb-15-2006 12:16:

thanks for your helpful advice guys!

cheers mattz

yeah thats right, you got to keep the vibe with the percs but yet at the same time keeps it tight and clean.

So what do you guys use for gated reverb?

Posted by mysticalninja on Mar-17-2006 00:44:

hihi.. bump. BTW, does anyone know where the thread that explains how to sidechain in fruity is? I just searched for like 15 min.. (which is how i found this old thread) Thanx!

What is the synth sound that Benassi uses for his trademark bass sound? I would love some guidance with this as I seem to keep hearing it in a few tunes recently and would love to have a go at recreating it.

Cheers

Anybody?

I would just like to know what type of waveform it is.

Posted by mysticalninja on Mar-19-2006 02:37:

sidechain compressed saw w/ reverb under a high pass filter. and it was made on a 303.

Thanks mystical, muchos gracias!

I have found a preset in the Manuel Schleiss Korg Legacy soundset that is a Benny Benassi style saw, so I gathered it would be a saw waveform. Any chance of just a brief rundown of how to achieve that sound in FL Studio 6. Do you set up the sidechain first and then put the reverb on to the signal thats been compressed and then put the hi-pass on? I see a lot of people asking questions about how this is done. Perhaps a tutorial from one of you talented pro producers out there might put the subject to bed and give us that aspire to be, a helping hand.

Thx in advance.
