Interesting GTR Interview: "95% of trance is cheesy b*ll*cks"

very good interview that raises some interesting questions, what are everyones thoughts on this?

In all honesty, most trance is shite. 95% of the promos I receive are just crap, totally unplayable, generic production and derivative melodies youve heard a thousand times before. They might be alright for 16 year old kids who have just graduated up from Lasgo, but not for anyone with at least partially developed taste.

It's so f*cking good to see a DJ / Producer who isn't in denial and doesn't have his head in the sand. Much respect GTR

quote:
I guess Im on a mission to try and show people theres another side of the genre thats much more edgy, leftfield and, dare I say, mature; a side that incorporates a lot more influences from house, tribal, techno and electro, and that totally blows away the sickly-sweet nonsense that a lot of big names spoon-feed to the kids.

f*cking sweet! that's what trance needs, not the same old bullshit formulas, the scene needs imagination and innovation, it needs to look at other genres for inspiration (like other genres have looked to trance in the past for ideas) rather than making another 2006 remix

quote:
Clubs should really work out if a producers any good or not before booking them as a DJ, but sadly most trance clubs just book flavour of the month producers on name alone without even checking out a set of theirs. That means you get loads of producers who turn up at a club, play a pre-planned set of all their big hits plus a few tracks done by mates of theirs, all mixed with zero technical aplomb, and they end up giving a bad name to all the other producers who know what theyre doing behind the decks.

very important point. nothing is worse than a DJ who is touring the world because he is a famous producer, i'm so sick of seeing these producers playing boring as batshit sets, anthem after anthem with no concept of set progression and set structure and the other techniques that turn a shit set into a great set (key mixing? )

Solarstone, and MIKE, are three f*cking good DJs i've seen who've become famous because of their productions but also worked very hard at developing their DJ skills. There are others but they are few and far between the shit producers come DJs that have diluted the scene

haven't heard a set from GTR since his tastey April 2004 promo, will have to downlaod some shit from him to find out what his current sound is like

i opened this thread to tell tathi he was a cockhead, but theyre all pretty valid points. just a few comments;

95% of all music is shit. if trance looks to house for inspiration thats cool, as long as it doesnt end up sounding like house coz that 95% figure will shoot up to 100% and, i hate to tell you elitists but some of us enjoy a good set full of anthemic tunes (tho not necessarily anthems).

oh, and key mixing is yummy

Unfortunately, most people who arent really into trance might get to hear one or two sets a year and theyll invariably be dreadful, so they assume the rest of the genre is like that as well and brand the whole lot as a load of cheesy bollocks.

Thats true, also with the harder style of music!

People generalise too much!

I agree with the article....he seems bright!!

Its really hard to try and change peoples negative perceptions

It is........but what can you do. Everyone has different taste & you just gutta accept it!

Good read, i think he makes alot of points we on TA have been saying for a while. Great to see somebody in a position to do something with this line of thought actually doing it.

I would have to agree that most "Trance" is crap. Most "Trance" tracks are pretty much rehashed templates that have been used over and over. Same sounds, same structure, same bullshit...

Therea a certain rule that one must abide when writing Trance however and the rule regarding Trance is - Is it hyponotic? People seem to forget that THAT is what TRANCE is about. Once you start throwing inyourface gay detuned supersaw leads, once you start writing melodies that are all over the f.ucking place because you think its "emotional" or dare I say "uplifting"... it stems away from being hypnotic and its no longer Trance in my opinion.

well said Onion

Tathi hahahahah

hahaha PKC oh the irony! rofl ahahah
errrrrrrrrr rofl

Perhaps some people find trance with sawtooth leads hypnotic, even if you don't.

I know I find alot of work by steve helstrip, push, etc quite hypnotic and low and behold their music mostly has sawtooth leads. Get off the "Im a sick dawg I'm gonna bash out supersaws" because its just a friggen instrument, like a guitar is in rock and roll. When you combine supersaws with other elements whos to say they cant be hypnotic? IMO it's all about the layering, and the not so apparentness of the lead that makes it least predictable.

Secondly I couldnt give two f.ucks which "big name" producers use what sound.. The point about sawtooth leads was that when its used its inyourface / over the top and therefore its not hypnotic to me... ( not to mention predictable ) Hell it could be a fucking square lead for all I care... but if its over the top and changes notes 50 billion times so that its "emotional and uplifting" then its not hypnotic to me... Thats my opinion... dont like it?... bad luck.

Dude you need to chill out, have a glass of water or something

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Feb-15-2006 03:05:

all music is predictable. its what separates music from random sounds

Posted by Light The Fuse on Feb-15-2006 03:42:

well there ya go - i always liked gtr

Posted by Aesthetic on Feb-15-2006 03:42:

I am chill? heh. If someone disagrees with you they're automatically pissed off?

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Feb-15-2006 03:45:

ONION, most of the producers probably just compose for themselves, and not for you, so it doesnt really matter whether you like their trance or not
