McGill Party Pictures make news -- Are we really that uptight??

So university kids partying, drinking and getting half naked is a news item?? Seriously?

Whats this country coming to? When people are shocked that college kids are actually doing something other than studying i think its about time we take the collective pickles out of our ass.

Investigation? Why? Is drinking and being naked in a private residence somehow illegal?

Seriously.... get a life people!

Lewd party pictures trigger investigation by McGill University officials

MONTREAL (CP) - A few months after a hazing scandal cost McGill University the last few games of its football season, the school is investigating a series of wild parties involving nudity alleged to have taken place on campus.

Lewd pictures from the parties graced the first four pages of Le Journal de Montreal newspaper on Tuesday.

The photos show students taking off each other's clothes and one of a female student performing what looks like a lap dance for a male counterpart.

No students appeared nude in the photos, which were taken by two students in January 2005 and again last month during annual festivities purportedly organized by an association of students of the school of management.

The photographers, who were not identified, told the newspaper that for $60 students were provided with booze, a T-shirt and a cheap coverall dubbed a "puke suit."

They earned points for nudity and for competing in drinking competitions, such as downing 72 shooters of beer in 72 minutes.

University officials promised an investigation Tuesday.

"We don't condone it," said Jennifer Robinson, associate vice-principal.

"Our first priority is the safety and well-being of our students and if any kind of inappropriate or disrespectful behaviour occurred, then we're going to take whatever steps are necessary to make sure it doesn't happen again."

That said, Robinson added the photos appear to show consenting adults.

"There's no crime in that," she said.

No complaints have been lodged with the university and Robinson said that as far as she knows, nobody was injured.

Adam Conter, president of the McGill Students' Society, said the tabloid newspaper published the photos - including one of two female co-eds locked in a kiss - just to sell papers.

"This is a normal aspect of university life," he said. "People party, people study, people go to museums."

Last August, McGill had the dubious distinction of being the only Canadian post-secondary institution to make Playboy magazine's list of top 10 party schools in North America.

But Conter said there is no more partying at the Montreal school than any other Canadian institution.

The latest controversy comes just four months after university officials cancelled the last two games of the McGill Redmen football season following allegations from an 18-year-old team rookie that he was sexually assaulted with a broomstick during a hazing ritual.

A university investigation found no evidence players were sodomized but confirmed degrading and inappropriate hazing.

The leader of one Montreal women's group called the pictures published Tuesday "shocking."

Michele Asselin, president of the Quebec Federation of Women, was not available for comment Tuesday but she earlier told Le Journal some of the pictures were sexist.

"That shows the fact that we have a lot of work left to do to counter this phenomenon in our society," Asselin said.

But Rita Tennenbaum, president of the McGill Women's Alumni Association, said university students have always had parties.

"I would hope that McGill's reputation would stand on its own ground, in terms of being an international university with wonderful professors and students from all over the world," she said.

cause is it probably goes against the code of conduct they make you sign when you enter residence.

my res that i was in had a pretty strict one. But you were allowed to drink and perform sexual acts in the privacy of your own room.

this was done by your toront star equivalent... le journal de montral.

these guys run after anything that'll look good on a cover page.

its nothing new, its been around for so long.

This is nothing new. Undergrads and grads alike have certain designated areas on campus and in the management (Bronfman) building where they can drink.

Haha, they didnt hire a stripper. A chick on their floor agreed to do it. Many different stories regarding money or not, but word was she didn't get paid. Just loved the attention.

I lived in Saugeen 5 years ago, and let me tell you, ANYTHING GOES. It isn't nicknamed 'The Zoo' for no reason..........

Ahhh, the goold old days...

I so went to the wrong parties while i was at York. Booo.

The reason the attention is brought to this is because of the stuffy school admin. All of this kind of stuff has been going on for decades in uni's/colleges, it just gets investigated when the admin staff actually learns about it, or its published in the paper.

No big deal, it will blow over, it will happen again, it will be published again. You are not going to stop a bunch of young adults from being naked and drunk, its just part of life.

but you just know that some sort of rule, regulation or law will be passed because of this. Res life sucks ass now compared to even when i was in school. No wonder seneca res feels more like a hotel than a residence!

I couldnt believe all the rules and fines involved now. FINES? PLEASE! If they had tried to fine me actual money when i was in school i would have laughed at them.

I lived at Calumet at York, and I will tell you, no rules. It was apartment style, and the dons just left us alone. The only time i ever saw my don was in the first week when he introduced himself, and that was it. It was great, turly like living on your own. No worries, no complaints, no hassles.

Remember that these universities also have obligations towards the companies and private donators, and must uphold their reputations as 'learning institutions'. Important research and work is conducted at uni's, and so they want to reflect that image, and not this party/drunken/naked image the news splashes around.

The admin staff i am sure would be happy if all this happened and nobody ever knew about it, that way the students get the total experience, and no negative press. As soon as laws are brought into the picture, thats when people need to put the hammer down, for the Uni's repuation, which is everything.

this is not about being "uptight"...once again, it's about liability, from the university's standpoint and a "good story" from the media's standpoint.

no grade 13 anymore = a LOT of underage undergrads.

some 18 yr. old getting wasted and getting hurt outside of their own room could = potential lawsuit by the parents.

is this a stretch? yes. does the university want to take a chance and/or appear to not care (whether they do or not)? no.

in light of the hazing incident, you can bet officials want to improve their public image...whether or not this is "normal behaviour" is irrelevant.

most mcgill students are from Ontario and the States, so yeah no wonder

Posted by MarkT on Feb-15-2006 19:41:

did they have a cigarette in their hand? then they were from Quebec

Posted by Billche on Feb-15-2006 20:12:

Looks like a pretty fun party :P

Honestly, I don't see why the media is going wild about something like this. Its university, people party... nothing bad happened.

If you want to talk about a bad party, look at Queens Aberdeen Homecoming party. Between 5000-7000 people attended, houses were destroyed, a car was flipped over and burned, and 35 people were arrested during the thing.

Compared to that, a few half naked kids running around is a joke.

but 18 in quebec is legal age. So whats the issue?

As for our situation in ontario. If we were a little more progressive wed make the drinking age here 18. If you are old enough to vite, die for your country and be held liable as an adult, you should damn well be allowed to have a beer and a smoke.
