Tone-arm/anti-skate weight

Where do you guys set yours at? Is it specific to certain records? What difference does it make? Just looking for some general info on the specifics of the tone arm weight.

What about the anti-skating wheel?

Posted by f0s_man on Feb-21-2006 17:18:

I believe it's set at "0", unless you're scratching... or maybe i'm wrong...

Posted by wee_rooney on Feb-21-2006 17:19:

antiskate should be 0

iv got Ortofon Scratchs' set at 3.5

Posted by DOOMBOT on Feb-21-2006 17:25:

Oh. I have my antiskate set at 3. That gonna do anything to the records?

Posted by DOOMBOT on Feb-21-2006 17:32:

I just read that if you are scratching you want the antiskate set to 0. It causes the needle to jump out of the groove on the record when backspinning?

the funny thing is that i bought lucas & Beltram - trust me and the ava mea remix was skipping like on ice straight away as i put the needle down. no matter how much pressure i put on it it still did it.

i thought i was going to have to buy a new one, i then experimented with the anti - skate and that was the thing that fixed it, i put anti skate on 5-6 and was fine. so now i just got to adjust for that tune! bit odd but you guys if you think your vinyl is not playable try playing with the anti skate. it will save you buying another copy or them saying it worked fine on there turntable.

Anti-Skate is exactly what is says.
So if your record is skipping inwards towards the label then try the anti-skate but most commonly it skips outwards.
The tonearm has a natural tendancy to swing inwards so what the anti-skate does is it fights that.

i just set my ant skate and tone arm weight at 3
i remember reading somewhere you should set both the same unless you are gonna be scratching, then set it at 0.

ALL records will get worn out eventually

I dont bother with what everyone else says to use (for a start decks/cartridges all vary). I set my carts up to run so that they dont skip when im using them. I aim to having the lightest setting I possibly can. Since I rarely scratch I can run a really light setting. Also since I dont have original tech headshells I have to use a 5p coin to add extra weight to the headshell. Then I reset the weight so the tonearm is balanced and then reset the dial to 0. Then I just add weight as needed. Just had a look now and mine are currently set to 4.

Also why do some people say they should set their antiskip to the same as their weight. Isnt it obvious that the antiskip is a spring that either pulls the tonearm slight inwards or outwards depending on the number setting. Always baffles me that
