To all those who hated Mike Harris:

You better have an even bigger hate on for Dalton Mcguinty.

He broke promises

He raised taxes

He got us into debt

and now we are about to have the biggest strike ever in Ontario history.

At least when Mike Harris pissed people off, he was doing it for a good reason.

Also a good lesson is never listen to unions when they talk politics. They hate the liberals, conservatives and NDP equally. They always support the opposing party because this is how they get what they want. They will never be happy.

quote:
12:01am Thursday.

Thats when CUPE leader Sid Ryan says more than 100,000 members of his union will leave their posts in an illegal walkout, plunging parts of Ontario in chaos.

The move is in response to the third reading of Bill 206, the legislation that will allow firefighters and police to retire early, a benefit that wont be applied to any other workers.

A walkout would immediately shutter at least 82 Toronto schools, end garbage collection in areas of the city where its not contracted out, stop snow clearing, close daycares and license offices and create real headaches for parents.

Ryans announcement came minutes after M.P.P. Brad Duguid confirmed to CityOnline that the third and final reading of the bill that would trigger the strike would be held Tuesday afternoon at Queens Park.

Despite the labour Sword of Damocles hanging over the province, Duguid still hopes Ryan can be persuaded not to pull the trigger.

"First off, we don't know what to expect. Our hope is still that we'll get a call from Mr. Ryan and he'll accept what we offered - what we thought was an honourable way out for him and his union," Duguid said.

"We don't think that an illegal strike is appropriate at this juncture. We believe it would be a colossal waste of time for his members. The government intends to move forward. We made that clear.

"I'm not sure why they're going out on strike. They can protest all they want, but I certainly hope they wouldn't inconvenience all Ontarians. The government has a right and duty to the people of this province to make legislation in their best interest."

The bill is expected come up for final reading at about 3 or 3:30pm.

Between 400 and 500 local heads of the CUPE met Tuesday to discuss their strike strategy after no progress was made over the weekend to address union concerns.

Ryan contends that by refusing to talk with union members about Bill 206, the provincial Liberals are forcing them to strike. They have a 93 percent mandate to do so.

"The members are livid and ready to fight but I don't want to disrupt services in the this province," he said. "I want the Premier to sit down and have some meaningful dialogue."

The Ontario CUPE head said rotating strikes are an option or what he says is his preference a full walkout.

But he makes it clear it won't last only one day.

"There'll be a whole bunch of strategies that will be talked about, but strike will be at the heart of it all. There won't be a strategy other than strike now," Ryan said, calling Dalton McGuintys government "the most unfriendly labour government that we've seen in a long time," including that of former Conservative premier Mike Harris.

The Premier hasnt budged on his views saying there have already been two rounds of committee hearings and several amendments to the proposed legislation.

"I think there's something wrong for any group to say because we are unhappy with the outcome of a lawful process, we are going to protest that in an unlawful way," McGuinty said, adding that if a strike occurs hell consult with his attorney general for any legal options he may have. "I don't think that's acceptable."

The tabled plans would also call for a two-thirds majority from the board in order to change benefit and contribution levels, which Ryan said would make it impossible for municipal workers to better their pension benefits.

I dont ever remember a time when schools were closed, paramedics were not working, garbage collectors were not collecting, and plows were idle ALL AT THE SAME TIME.

I really hope Mcsquinty feels this one at election time.

It's all Mike Harris' fault to begin with

conversation with a friend a few days ago (about the recent fed. election):

Me: how can u vote for liberals after all they've done over the past 13 years?
Him: ya i know i know....but that was a completely different government; and I just couldn't vote for conservatives after what mike harris did.
Me: ...yea...

Posted by nusty on Feb-21-2006 19:21:

I think they should go to jail.

im all for striking when pissed off about something. But the fact that mcguinty wont even budge on this issue is ridiculous.

Also ridiculous is that there are strikes for pensions but nothing happens when promises are broken and taxes are raised.

If mcguinty had done what he did in europe or anywhere else for that matter, the WHOLE COUNTRY would have been shut down including those who dont belong to any sort of union.

corrected.

anyone walking off the job should face legal consequences.

I'm fucking sick of this city, province, etc. being held hostage by these big unions who get their members to walk whenever the fuck they feel like it.

vote out the gov't, hold out when your contract is up, but *fuck you* if you illegally walk off the job.

most of us aren't in unionized jobs and can't just walk when we feel we're getting shafted...then they will illegally walk? FUCK THAT.

this is NOT the right way to enact change.

Posted by Jayx1 on Feb-21-2006 19:38:

this would be a good opportunity for mcguinty to seize the day and fire ALL UNIONIZED WORKERS and hire private contractors. This would be an excellent way to save a lot of money and teach these guys a few things. We could pay them a third of what they get now AND STILL BE COMPETITIVE BASED ON THE SKILL OF THE WORK INVOLVED.

If mcguinty actually had the balls to do this ID ACTUALLY VOTE LIBERAL IN THE NEXT PROVINCIAL ELECTION.

Sadly mcguinty's balls are about the size of a peanut. So its not going to happen.

Walmart has done this numerous times when their stores get unionized. Fire everybody and re-open a week later and re-hire.
they end up getting a lot of the same employees back.

Correct me if I'm wrong but was this bill not drafted 10 years ago under the Harris government, then underwent a long process of commitee meetings, public hearings, negotiations with the municipalities and other stakeholders (ie. unions), which resulted in an inordinate number of ammendments (>100). I think that there has been a lot of budging on this. Also, it may be worth while to point out that this bill effects a number of groups of which CUPE is only one.... and the only one that has a problem with it.

Seriously, their only issue is that they need 75% rather then 50% member support to change their pension plan????? BIG FUCKIN' DEAL! They're going to disrupt the entire province for this? And you think McGuinty is being unreasonable? 10 years and 100 ammendments seems like a pretty good sign all three governments involved in this legislation were rather cooperative with all the stakeholder.

Posted by Jayx1 on Feb-21-2006 19:42:

and i say good...

unions had their day. They are no longer beneficiary to society. Actually its more to the contrary now.

i guess my biggest point of all this is that harris wasnt the bad guy that everyone made him out to be. As evident by the fact that unions have hated Bill davis (PC) David Peterson (Liberal) Bob Rae (NDP) Mike Harris/Eves (PC) and now Mcguinty (Liberal)

So if people are going to hate on one for causing labour strife, you have to hate them all.

And someone needs to grow balls and use this opportunity to shut the unions down.

I think that the people who hate Harris do so more because of the way he conducted himself (intentionally causing labour unrest where there wasn't any before and, moreover, the air of indifference he projected).

You're right, unions representing public sector employees generally will hate what ever government is sitting regardless of who comprises said government. This is to be expected as unions survive only by maintaining an adversarial position to their employer.

I think the best way to deal with labour issues was that of Nazi Germany (don't hate me yet people, they had a great system). All unions were amelgamated into a single body that was chartered by the government but operated independently. This body would then negotiate all collective barginning agreements with employers. A government ministry would mediate the negotiations against a dead line. If no agreement were reached by the dead line the government would impose a new collective agreement (in most instances it was simply renewing the existing agreement). Failure to comply fully would result in the union losing its charter or the employer losing their license to do business. There was not one strike or lock out during the Nazi regime.

tidbits from an article in today's Toronto Star:

quote:
"The premier of Ontario cant back down every time somebody says, `Im unhappy with the outcome of that lawful process, so Im going to protest that in a way that is unlawful, McGuinty said.

I just think thats inappropriate, and I think it would be irresponsible on my part to accept that.

agreed.

quote:
While some Ontario schools will remain open, scores of buildings with older boilers, including many in Toronto, will be forced to shut down immediately, said Rick Johnson, president of the Ontario Public School Boards Association.

Once again, the kids in this province are going to be held hostage in an argument between adults, Johnson said from his home in Pontypool, Ont.

Its just really sad.

Johnson said many of the provinces 100,000 special-needs students will feel the effects most keenly because CUPE represents educational assistants at most school boards.

Ive seen notices from boards all across the province saying that parents of high-needs kids are being advised to keep their children at home in the event of a walkout.

I'd like to see the parents of these 100,000 kids threaten a class-action lawsuit against CUPE. If this is an unlawful strike, sue them for the costs of your child care or lost wages for having to stay home with them. The cost to care or miss work to mind 100,000 kids x however many days they strike would be a LOT of money, I suspect.

quote:
Opposition leaders said the premier is to blame if workers walk out.

I think it represents a failure of leadership on the part of Mr. McGuinty, said Conservative leader John Tory.

wrong jackass...it's an illegal strike. If they walk out, how about we hold CUPE members accountable for THEIR OWN CHOICES AND ACTIONS.

as much as I don't care for McGuinty either, putting this all on him is complete bullshit.

Posted by Jayx1 on Feb-21-2006 22:56:

its a failure of leadership on the part of both mcguinty AND sid ryan.
