This animation is exactly the same or very similar to some investment firm commercial that's been around for a year or two.

Looks really cool aesthetically, so I'll probably check it out...

Hopefully it's not just Philip K. Dick's insanity reaching beyond the grave to try and brainwash me into being a Scientologist...

Yeah, lol. I hate those commercials.

And I've seen some independent films that have used this type of animation. I hate independent films....

I'm pretty sure it's just cell-shading, which has been around for quite a while, but gained some public notoriety when the Sega Dreamcast console launched some years back, and seems to have steamrolled its way stylistically into the pop culture mainstream...

Perhaps he was just referring to the fact that it was shot as a live action film and then turned into cell shaded animation...

looks strange....almost disorienting. i'd check it out - but have a feeling that i would have preferred it if it was the real actors, and not some cell-rendering animation or whatever of them. who knows, have to see the real deal first to really make any judgement

Posted by Candeeman on Feb-25-2006 19:01:

Meh, I'm not really feeling the animation

You guys all gotta see Waking Life. That movie is directed by the same guy, and uses the same animation technique. A Scanner Darkly really isnt doing anything new. thats not saying its going to be bad; in fact i think this is gonna kick some ass.

That is fking cool, i'll see that for sure.

i saw that.

they take video and stencil in the outlines overtop with digital canvases every couple of frames and fade between the frames they do to create that effect.

wired magazine's cover story was all about animation in hollywood.

I've been waiting to see this. I remember watching a trailer for it at the theaters last year and then it just disappeared off the radar for awhile. I thought maybe the scrapped they project or I missed the release, but I'm thankful to see that it will be released this year now.

ya from what i understand, scanner darkly isn't cell shaded through a computer, but all hand drawn.
At first i thought the artwork was a gimmick, but from i understand, it helps the theme of the story which involves a distorted perception of reality through hallucinogens

There was another movie involving a series of dreams that had the same exact animation, or at least parts of it were animated the same way. I saw the movie not too long ago at Virgin but can't remember what it's called. Anyone remember?
