Dog people, advice needed: GF and I are looking at getting a new dog

My GF and I have been looking at getting a dog. I would appreciate opinions from those of you who have had experience with dogs. We have narrowed it down to either a Alaskan Malamute or a Siberian Husky. I have done research and I know that I will be getting my hands full with either dog and I plan on spending a lot of time training and exercising the dog. I am also prepared for their stubbornness and wanting to be the "alpha". From what I have read it seems the Malamutes have an easier tempermant, more mild mannered, well behaved and controllable than the Husky. I have also heard that the Mals tend to be more loyal. So any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

No, I recommend not getting a husky. I have two of them. And trust me, they are only for the dedicated dog-lover. You have to laugh when they destroy things, because they do it so often, that you would end up killing it, if you got pissed.

First and foremost, it depends on what your living situation is, and then you pick a dog around that. Don't even think about getting a big or even medium sized dog if you live in an apartment.

Unless you live in a house and have a fair share of property it would be unfair to get a larger dog like that. Walking the dog or taking it to the park on weekends would not be enough.

Look at getting a northern inuit if you can. My friend has 2. They are 1/4 husky 1/4 malmalute 1/4 german sheperd and 1/4 wolf!
Really tame, They dont bark but they sometimes talk by making wierd noises and they hardly shed their coat!

I would also not recommend a bulldog, because they are very high maintenance. You have to clean their folds, and wipe their ass. They have more problems than they are worth, IMO.

Both the malamute and the husky are dogs bred for hard work. Unless you have an enourmous garden, don't get these dogs 'cuz they'll be a pain in the ass destroying everything and being frustrated.

Yeah, you would think that they would hate being latched to a harness, and pulling you on a sled.

They LOVE it. They get so excited, and talk alot, until you let them pull you. It's awesome.

A friend of mine recommended that I look into a Norwegian Elkhound. He said that they will have everything that I would want in a Husky/Malamute, but yet be chilled enough during the day when I am not at home. He said that if they need to work, they can be work beasts, but are content at just chilling with you inside while you watch TV. Anyone have experience with an Elkhound?

We've never really had problems with her.

I would recommend it. Always excited when your ready to play but also very lazy at times.
