Use VTT.

you can download it at http://www.carrotinnovations.com

you will need 2 soundcards, and 2 RCA to 1/8inch cables.

just plug into the 2 line ins, go through the set up wizard in VTT, specify that you are using an external mixer.

done.

I plan on doing the same thing real soon.

you can use it with one soundcard... but it will be two mono signals
use just have to use an audio splitter

Question: Do I need a really good sound card to get a good-quality .WAV, or can any sound card pretty much suffice?

A good soundcard is a must for quality recordings and playback. Don't even consider consumer cards i.e. soundblaster, etc. Have a look at pro cards i.e. echo, darla, delta series. I currently own a Delta 66 and it sounds great.

What price range am I looking at?
Can you recommend something cost-effective yet quality?

kk heres what I did, I fugred this all out within the last week

Step 1) make sure your mixer has two little output things on the back, with "recording" or "rec" (one red one white) on the back, my mixer is shitty, and its got em, so I am assuming everyone elses in the world has got em too

Step 2) Your gonna have to drive to radio shack, and find a cable that converts from the white and the red, into a regular headphone(small headphone) jack

Step 3) You then have to look at the back of your computer by the sound card area and search for an input, mine is color coated a light blue (compaq computer), and plug the red/white side of the cable you just bought into the back of your mixer into the "rec" holes, you then plug the little headhpone jack into the back of your computer

Step 4) download goldwave, you can find it at download.com, and create a new file (of the length of song you want to record, or length of mix)

Step 5) There is a little device control window that will be popped up, our should be, with like play, stop, pause all that good stuff, and two visual type things

Step 6) click on the button that looks like a circle and then a check following, you then will get a new window, and you need to click on volume, and put a check by "line in" <--- VERY IMPORTANT.. then ya just say okay get outa that window

Step 7) your back to the device controls, hold down control, press record, and your music from your mixer is hot comin streaming into yoru computer, it even comes out the computer speakers HALLELUGHIA!!!!!

If there is somthing wrong wiht my process tell me, I will troubleshoot for ya

hahahha woops somthing I did not realize is that you dont have any turntables.. ahh hahahahahhaha, we can pretend though that I did not type all that out just for fun

as for the soundcard, I have stock Compaq sound card it works perfect, I cannot tell a decrease in quality, although sometimes when the sound is off, and speakers are on I pick up radio.. but I am thinking it is just the shitty computer spearkers I have, I got some new logitech's though, ohh pure bliss
