Tangerine Dream ... whats good?

I've heard songs that I've liked by this group before, but seeing as they have a MASSIVE discography, (much bigger than anyone else I have ever ever seen) I have no idea where to begin.

I would love to get a feel for their sound though, b/c I'm sure there are countless treasure's hidden in what seems to me like an endless list of releases from 1970's Electronic Medidtation to 2005's Phaedra.

Also since they have been around for everything, I feel like getting into this band would also help me understand the history of trance and how things progressed a lil bit better.

So if anyone could post their fav. tracks by this group to narrow it down, or post any relevant info I would appreciate it.

I also did a search and found this related thread, although its not very big.

Thanks!

I've thought the same thing, so many releases. I haven't been able to find them at any music stores so I guess the best bet is online. Check out their "Dream Mixes", esp if your into EDM. I heard previews of them and read reviews and seem really nice. The have many live CDs too, which should be good. I saw a video of them live from the 1980s, and they were really good live. Looked like some heavy metal band, but their music was more elctronically produced new age, jazz and ambient than heavy metal or hard rock, although they did have some nice guitar solos.

Hopefully there is someone out there on TA who knows more than we do..I'm kind of in the same boat as you are..

just ask one of the old farts like jp or grimreaper, he's a walking discography lol

i would just suggest going to amazon and listening through samples...i have lots of favorites, but that doesn't necessarily mean you'll like them too...

i dunno...i mean tangerine dream's music i a lot more "new agey" than a lot of the seventies ambient acts...so if that's not your thing...you might not like it

I've got 'Ricochet' and 'Rubycon'. Both good, two long tracks on each. Very deep stuff, sounds like Jarre would have done if he had smoked way too much weed

My favourite is 'Love On A Real Train', soundtrack of 'Risky Business' (1983). It's my killer tune of the moment

Just in case anyone else is interested, I listened to Floorfillers advice and found a great review of their material on Amazon.com
