World Baseball Classic thread

I guess I'll start something up here, for anyone who will be followuing this

How much press is being given to it in your country?
I was in Taiwan over the past week, and saw quite a bit of advertising there, for the broadcasts of the games (atleast the ones that Chinese Taipei will be in)

I wonder if they will even televise it in italy

I don't like the whole schedule... like Japan area get March 3-5... then we have to wait till the 8-11 then 3 days after that.... I don't know, I guess I'll have to see how it works...

Posted by Mebot on Mar-03-2006 02:56:

It'll be Dominican Republic and the US in the final.

I'm actually quite excited for it, at first I wasn't in to it at all, but the closer it's been getting and the commercials and ads i've been seeing and hearing, just makes me wish baseball (and summer) was here already.

I was into it before there were more pullouts than a $2 hooker. Vlad and Pedro out yesterday. C.C. Sabathia and Wagner for the U.S. It really cheapens it for me. Plus, a lot of guys are already biaching about not being game ready yet. Then A Fraud or something is gonna blow a knee and ruin my Yankee season and I'm gonna get pissed. Fantasy is cool but my team is most important.

I'll watch the big games. Dominican vs. USA still looks very interesting. But Dominican vs. Venezuela looks almost better. Great pitching of Venezuela vs. the hitting of the Dominicans. I wanted to see Ortiz, Tejada, Vlad, Soriano, PooHoles, Manny... oh well. The best lineup ever!!

this should have been done in November, not during March

nonetheless...very excited for this

I wonder why the players can't just start their training and preparation a few weeks earlier.
Probably not the solution, but it seems it would help.

Posted by partyhopper on Mar-03-2006 06:50:

in the first game, Korea beats Chinese Taipei (aka Taiwan), 2-0
Jae Seo, formerly of the Mets, now with the Dodgers, gets the win.

Posted by partyhopper on Mar-03-2006 13:51:

Japan beats China - 18-2!

Posted by Shamez214 on Mar-03-2006 20:29:

I think the Dominican team is WAAAAAAAAAAAAY overrated. I mean... who is their ace? Jose Lima?

Posted by King Ecnal on Mar-03-2006 23:15:

I like Venezuela... to win it all...

Posted by Spartan on Mar-04-2006 04:31:

I think the US team is overrated. I really will be surprised if we make the finals.

Posted by partyhopper on Mar-05-2006 16:34:

First upset of the tournament - Korea beat Japan, 3-2
However, Japan will still advance to the 2nd round, and they play each other again there.
It will probably mean that Korea will face USA first in that round (which is another round-robin)

Bartolo Colon, whom I'm not a big fan of. Francisco Liriano is a top pitching prospect for Minnesota. Odalis Perez is decent. Fernando Rodney is a decent reliever with Detroit. A few more guys I've heard of and some periphery no-namers. In this competition, pitching that is more game ready will definitely be so important. Without Vlad, their fearsome lineup isn't as imposing but still the best.

Everyone agrees USA's bullpen is by far the best. Venezuela has Santana, Zambrano, and Garcia with Abreu, Victor Martinez, and Miguel Cabrera supplying the offense.

1. USA
2. Venezuela
3. Dominicans
4. Japan (comes back from loss to S. Korea)

Venezuela vs. Dominican R. is on Tuesday at 1 p.m. eastern. I'm working so one of the most intriguing matchups of the whole thing will be missed.

Weird seeing Beltran/Delgado for Puerto Rico playing the Mets right now. Even funnier if one of the Mets minor league guys would drill them.

I don't think A Rod, Derrek Lee, Mark Teixeira, Chase Utley, Michael Young, Derek Jeter, Johnny Damon, a healthy Griffey is overrated. Nor a bullpen featuring Lidge, Nathan, and Street (in the top 7 closers in MLB).

Starting pitching is probably 2nd best in the competition with Peavy, Clemens, and Dontrelle Willis. Not bad in my mind. It's all about how game ready they are and how much they care. I can see the U.S. losing because people in Venezuela take it so much more seriously.

Judging soley by rosters, I think it comes down to US and Venezuela. Of course there could be upsets, but those two teams are stacked.

Posted by InterMilan31 on Mar-05-2006 23:37:

USA, Dominicans, Puerto Rico and Japan will be my final 4...and I know nothing about baseball

Posted by Pio on Mar-07-2006 17:31:

Strange that none of you guys mentioned Cuba. No one really knows what to expect from that team. They are the world champions after all, even if they haven't been measured up against professionals yet.

My bet is on Puerto Rico though...for obvious reasons.

I'm going tonight to the opening game in San Juan: PR v. Panama. Can't wait!

No way! They're all coming straight up from the island.

Maybe we'll get a few defectors from that team after the series is over.

And you can count on them having great players that we know absolutely nothing about yet. Cuba is a baseball powerhouse.

Big Papi with the first HR and RBI of the Dominican Republic vs Venezuela game

Posted by Member of X on Mar-07-2006 22:24:

Dominicans vs. Venezuela today. 11-5 Dom's.

Carlos Zambrano got annihilated even though his third pitch went 99 mph. Big Papi and Adrian Beltre hit 2 deep. Maybe Beltre will bounce back this year. Colon was shutting people out. But the pitch count rule took out Johan Santana who went 3 1/3 innings with 5 K's. But he threw 61 pitches, that's a lot for just over 3 innings. As such, Miguel Batista got hammered coming in. Dominican hitting overcame Venezuela pitching for this game.

Posted by King Ecnal on Mar-08-2006 00:59:

Miguel Cabrera is amazing...

Big Papi already has proven he's incredible, just re-enforced it today...

and Adrian Beltre proved how stupid it was to sign with Safeco Park... moron...

Posted by Shamez214 on Mar-08-2006 03:35:

I hope Japan wins. Or South Africa.

Posted by Pio on Mar-08-2006 05:59:

Tuesday roundup:

Dominican Republic 11- Venezuela 5
United States 2- Mexico 0
Puerto Rico 2- Panama 1
Italy 10- Australia 0
Canada 11- South Africa 8

Great series so far!
