[MEL] Anthony Pappa - April 24th – F4

Over the last five years, Private Function & Darkbeat have both been responsible for bringing Melbourne some of the finest progressive & breaks artists from around the globe, such as Steve Porter, Elite Force, Matthew Dekay, Klaus Hill, Habersham, Chris Fortier, Omid 16b & Lee Burridge.

This Anzac Day Eve, these two crews join forces for the first time to bring home Melbourne’s biggest export Anthony Pappa for the first time in two years.

At 21, Pappa made the bold step of returning to England equipped with nothing other than his outstanding mixing ability and a boxful of his beloved records with the intention of making a mark on the scene.

Anthony’s mix albums for Global Underground’s “Nubreed”, EQ’s “Balance” and albums with React and Renaissance have added an even more complex facet to his career. His impeccable mixing, programming and dance floor sensibilities have transferred perfectly on to compilation cds – a fact which has been proved by the reactions to the mixes (not to mention the sales figures!).

Production work has become an equally important area of his career with singles and remixes typifying his sound being created on an increasingly faster rate along side current studio partner, Barry Gilbey.

His affable and genuine character, a grueling DJ schedule and studio forays combine to make Anthony one of the most suitable ambassadors for dance music in the world today.

Anthony has tirelessly toured the world over and over in order to push his tough take on electronic music to virgin crowds. Those who witnessed Anthony’s last Melbourne set can attest to his ability to literally destroy a room. Do not miss this opportunity to see Anthony Pappa lift the roof off!

We have also chosen a unique venue in F4. Rarely used for gigs of this calibre – F4 is a hidden gem perfect for an intimate yet rocking party experience – complete with total sound transformation and enough room to comfortably enjoy the deep sounds Darkbeat and Private Function have built their reputation in delivering.

While we’re lucky that so many DJ’s return to our shores year after year, Anthony Pappa has a schedule that does not afford him that luxury. It’s been two years since he was last here in 2004 and it will probably be another two before we see him home again so this will not be something to be missed.

Supporting Anthony are both residents from Private Function & Darkbeat, along with a couple of Melbourne’s rising stars for good measure.

Dean Millson
Since launching Private Function in 2001, Dean has helped it grow to Melbourne’s premier purveyor of progressive sounds. With a reputation built around being versatile enough to play almost any room size or timeslot, Dean has warmed up for many of the worlds best, such as Mathew Dekay, Chris Fortier not to mention Mr Pappa when he was last in town in 2004. This year has seen Dean take the next step, opening the Global Underground room Two Tribes, along with a main room set supporting Paul Van Dyk looming at the end of March. With quite a number of big plans in place for PF in 2006 make sure you watch this space.

Rollin Connection
Darius Bassiray & Daniel Banko have been very busy of late – playing main sets at various benchmark parties around Melbourne, warming up and closing after some of the worlds best DJ’s. Recently they have not just been restricted to the DJ booth, with the bastard childs of Darkbeat running an array of successful events, most recently hosting international heavyweight Lee Burridge. Studio time has also been a priority - with Darius having 4 records set for release in 2006 – Lorenzo [Proton Music], Gyppo Funk [Iron Box Music] & Our Sound [Proton Music] with Stuart Mckeown. Most recently, Bassiray & Mckeown won the world wide Blake Jarrell - Okojobi remix competition with their remix edging out some of the worlds best producers, and earning them another full release on Proton Music.

Big Kev
Since arriving in Australia from his native South Africa in 2002, Kevin Van Gils has made the Antipodean transition look easy. Spinning his style of funked up breaks, through to driving progressive and more recently dirty electro-tech it didn’t take long for Big Kev to get noticed. One of the original residents of Melbourne’s Pressure parties, and a resident with Private Function since 2005, Big Kev has also graced the lineups at some of Melbourne’s other premier parties, including Sunshine People on NYD for the past two years–with his set on “The Black Pearl” on NYD 2006 as a definite highlight.

Paulie C & Lister Cooray
Paulie & Lister launched InProgress Entertainment in 2005 with their first party presenting Steve May & Dean Millson. Backing up this effort they were invited to warmup the main room at the last Obsession party at Rom 680 where they put together two hours of progressive aural bliss, capturing the ears and attention of those in attendance with smooth mixing and the perfect segues into the rest of the night. While they might be two names you’re not familiar with at the moment, by the end of 2006 this may well be a different story. With another instalment of Inprogress in the pipeline, along with a support set to Kyua vs Albert whenthe Unify crew brings them to town in late March, Paulie C & Lister Cooray are out to cement their reputations as the year goes on.

There will be a strictly limited capacity to this party, with an emphasis on a quality intimate event. A limited number of earlybird tickets will be available for $25 from the Private Function& Darkbeat crews direct (PM for details). Alternatively, tickets will be available from the listed outlets (TBC) for $27.50+BF. Tickets will be more on the door.

How excellent! I've never seen Mr Pappa and he's been recommended by all and sundry as playing a style I would love. I'm down for this- and F4's a pretty cool little venue.

I say... nice.

Some really good news! The local lineup looks great!!

Posted by AnitA on Mar-01-2006 23:52:

About time! Let's hope Pappa plays a filthy set.

Been a while since I've been to F4 also.

Well done to Dean, Paulie & Lister!

Millson will you be offering sexual harassment with your tickets to Pappa like Scotty & Vi are for Kyau vs Albert? *crosses fingers*

I am really looking forward to this. Perfect example of how a quality local line up makes for a great night I wonder if Soups will be coming

Lister and Paulie played the best set ever at Obsession, Kev has been playing some awesome choonage and Rollin Connection are easily one of my Melbourne fav's now. Millson is the shizzle both on and off the court, and as for Mr Pappa *head explodes*

Guess I'll be there

yeah same! that was ages ago! (2002?)

he still play prog then, what does he play these days?

Big Ears

MOTHER OF GOD

Anthony Pappa's last swing through town in support of Balance 006 was the best set I've heard any DJ play in this country full stop.

At F4, too. Hadn't been before the last InProgress night but I reckon its a very quality venue.

I'm going to suggest anyone interested in this (ie anyone with ears capable of withstanding dance music) gets their ticket early as if the bumper-to-bumper traffic jam that was room last time around is any indication, mr pappa's got himself quite a following.
