Gold Medal or Stanley Cup

I gotta be honest and say the Stanley Cup would mean more to me then a Gold Medal.

Stanley Cup for sure....... more games... more pain... more struggle... more teams... more players... more politics... more time... more energy....

just plain more put into winning the cup over the gold......

i'm more about the gold medal, the proudest moment of being a canadian was celebrating the gold medal in 2002. it just so much 'more' then the nhl, even though it is made up of nhl players. it gives you a reason to be proud of canada. And i've actually been a calgary flames fan since i was a little kid, and as excited as i was to see them finally make it to the finals and almost win (they should of, damn rejected cup winning goal ) canada winning just seems like so much more.

I'll admit that it was a great moment back in '02 when we won the gold medal. But I voted for the Stanley Cup. I think Canada already gets so much attention for our hockey program and we are already viewed as basically the frontrunner in the sport. A Stanley Cup in Toronto though, oh man, that would shut more than a few people up.

the way that poll is worded, I would have to settle for the money. I mean, even Cup winners like Rocket Richard are selling their silverware for money, which is too bad. I'm sorry, but I'd take a contract of $30M over five years than a Stanley Cup or gold medal. In fact, most of the Canadian players on this '06 team won in '02 and they're getting shit on with this "what have you done for me lately?" attitude.

without the wording, I would take the gold medal (but just barely) over a Stanley Cup.

Hell, the Raptors have a better chance of winning a championship than the Leafs. The Leafs have as much a chance as Harold Ballard coming back to manage them

the closest the Leafs are going to get to winning ANYTHING is Mats Sundin's gold medal. 38 years and counting.... muhahahahaha

^^^ See what I mean!

not to take away from the thrill and honour it would mean to win a medal for Canada...but personally, the Stanley Cup would mean more to me, for sure.

whatever sport you're playing, you (hopefully) want to win against who you perceive to be your elite competition...and for pro hockey players, that usually means the NHL.

money? nah. Even if you're "only" good enough to have a long career in the minors, you're still making decent money. I think it's hard to reach that level in any sport if it's *just* about the money...you'd quit as soon as you knew you weren't ever going to hit that big pay day.

Q. What is the difference between the Toronto Maple Leafs and a cigarette machine?
A. You can get Players out of a cigarette machine

Q. What do the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Argonauts and the Toronto Blue Jays all have in common besides being based in Toronto?
A. None of them can play hockey

I'm sorry Leafs fans.. but your team just plain blows

People talk about the NHL being the Elite but in all honesty it's the olympics that have the elite players. At one time that was not the case but with NHLers playing in the olympics you do have the elite players playing for Hockey Gold.

I'm all for the Stanley Cup....as a Canadian Hockey fan we are brought up believing that Lord Stanley is where it's at. I'm pretty sure the european countries see it differently and the gold medal at the olympics is greater.

*whack* cup check... All i want is to see the leafs win the cup at least once in my life... who gives a shit about the gold

sure...that has changed in recent years and I agree that some countries, particularly in Europe, would see the Gold Medal as better.

still...if Team Canada were allowed to practise together for any length of time, I think we'd see a different result.

most other teams, while they do have an injection of NHL talent, have had the opportunity to play together for a while, no?

the olympics is the biggest international platform at which hockey is played (there is the canada cup aka world cup but unfortunately i dont think it measures up to the olympics)
this is where we can show the world why over 50% of the nhl is candian talent!!! so winning a gold medal is more valuable than the cup. although bringing the cup back to a canadian team would be AWESOME, it really is only good for that one city. and the team is made up of players from all around. btw very few candian teams have superstar canadian players
a gold medal in hockey is telling the world hockey is canadas game.
