Sneaker Pimp thinking about moving to calgary

Hello everyone.

I found tranceaddict through another site some acquaintences of mine frequent called detroitclubscene.com.
I live in Detroit, MI. I was born in Canada and my family moved to the US in 1991. Recently my boyfriend and I have been thinking about moving out of the states and back to Canada. We hear Calgary is booming and plan to visit in May. We are fairly involved in the club scene here in Detroit and were wondering what are some clubs to check out while in Calgary. My boy & I actually are househeads. I know this forum is geared towards Trance music, but I've been trying to find other forums that might cater to house or the nightclub scene and I keep coming up empty. Are there some good nights for house music out in Calgary? Or is there another site(s) that I should check out?

Thanks in Advance,
Karen

I appologize in advance if this wasn't posted in the right place or if there is another forum that this would be better suited in.

you posted in just the right place.

2 years ago, I would have been the guy to help you out..but I got stupid and moved to Toronto for school and only returned this week. So im pretty out of whos playing where and whats hot.

anyways, Calgary in May is pretty dull. Its all weather dependant. The ski/boarding season in teh rockies is over, but the outdoor summer tourism hasnt started because its still too cold. But yes, it is booming. Skilled labour is in very high demand.

if you want to check another board, i might suggest subtutious. www.subtutious.com
if the board hasnt changed much its an older, hippie oriented, house/breaks board. I dont share the same attitude as many people there, so I dont frequent it much, but it is calgary centered, and might be more help than I am.(but if you give me 2 weeks, Ill be back up to speed on everything)

If Toronto is a possibility, check out http://houseaddict.com - much smaller than this forum & house-oriented of course - most people on that forum are in the Toronto area - very active scene there.

Although since you're so close you may have already checked out the place.

I lived in Calgary for several years, but not recently. Found it was a good place to work & low taxes, but dull otherwise. Most people were there to work and raise families.

J gave you a good lead. Also check www.electrocalgary.com in the events forum or www.barstar.tk Barstar lists every possible event covering every musical genre including house. To be honest, I find Calgary to be much more house friendly than trance friendly...and booming is an understatement. I've never seen so many Help Wanted signs in my life.

Ehhh... As far as Detroit having people, it barely does. There are more people living in the city of CAlgary than there are in the actual city of Detroit. Unemployment is skyrocketing, my boyfriend has been unemployed for 7 months and there is no signs that the bad times will end soon because the Auto industry is in the toilet. I've got some wonderful friends here and there's usually a good party going on, but it's kind of a moot point when you have no money to go out. Most of my acquaintences who have the means to leave are doing so and I'm not going down with the ship either.

Listen to j-spot

And take care of my former roomie out there in Calgary! She's an amazing asset that the city of Detroit is losing if she moves.

if you move here your bf can find work instantly in the oil/gas industry, all he needs is a few tickets (h2s, first aid) and voila $6k/mo+ easy, work 2 months straight and he'd have well over $12k to get something else going. not to mention our weed is fantastic!

Calgary definately has jobs for you but not much night compared to other cities. There isn't much of a club scene but if you look hard enough you can find some house nights around. I haven't been to any in a while so I couldn't think of any off hand. Although, speaking of house, Satoshi Tomiie is coming on Wednesday, sometimes we get a dj or two that drops by.
