I have their album "Before The Dawn Heals Us" and it is like Pink Floyd on an even worse drug trip, mixed in with some Boards Of Canada type out-thereness (haha dunno any other word) and you throw in some early 90s grungey stuff or noise rock stuff, like Nirvana or Sonic Youth, and you have M83. But I definitely would consider the stuff on that album "Shoegazer" or "Space-rock", definitely has those influences. But I would consider their earlier stuff experimental ambient music, almost IDMish, quite out there, and I'm used to out there stuff, but I think it was quite much...even on the album I have...I'de rather just put on a Pink Floyd album that at least I can sing to and is a bit more enjoyable. That album just made me feel..weird, lol. I listened to it from beginning till end..

You can easily tell the shoegazer influences from My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. I think it's a good album, a bit pretentious at times. But Teen Angst is flawless.

You should definitely check out the earlier albums (M83 and Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts) when Nicolas Fromageau also was a member. I also recommend Boom Bip's remix of Don't Save Us From The Flames, a nice alternative to Superpitchers wellknown remix.

Unrecorded is a cool track. The genre is called 'noise', right?

Not really but it's something similar, called "Shoegazer" and there's also "Space rock" which use lots of noise or "distortion" to create "soundscapes" and they are like being on drugs (sometimes they play on drugs)....there's pure noise and noise rock stuff but that is a bit more "punkish", Sonic Youth I believe is one of the biggest "noise rock" groups. The idea isn't to create "songs" or really structured stuff, it's a bit more free-form, experimental music, big in the 70s and 80s avant-garde and drug scenes. Thats a big influence on M83 i'de say. There's some influence in their sound from post rock stuff, and noise rock, but definitely more "space rock".

Check out their second album (the dead seas one). Its GREAT. Check out Nathan Fakes (Drowning in a Sea of Love) new album too. It's got some similar noise style tracks.

Rasta

i thought "Red Seas and Lost Ghosts" was a great album. But then again, I like that glitchy, techy type stuff. Worth a listen IMO

Love m83... One of the best acts out there...

They were better pre 2k4 when they were both guys.

i've only heard before the dawn heals us but, for the most part, i like them a lot.

definitely reminds me of a modern-day pink floyd.

M83 - in church is a great tune.

Posted by PhilBxR on Mar-05-2006 18:17:

Ooooh yes, Luciano playing that in The Arches

I'm a big fan of M83. Love the album "Before The Dawn Heals Us". They do a fair bit of chillout, with my favourites from the album being:

In The Cold I'm Standing
I Guess I'm Floating
Let Men Burn Stars

'Teen Angst' is a great tune too.

Not bad for a one-man band!!!!

I've def been into M83 for the recent while ...if you like them you should obviously checkout boards of canada, ulrich schnauss, and the rest.

Posted by SafeAzFook on Mar-05-2006 18:22:

Oh yea I have a sasha ableton live mix of teen angst, sounds really cool, i mean its got that glitchy techy sound to it naturally, thetn add the ableton effects and its a tech bonanza

Not sure about M83, but normally one act bands hire musicians to tour with them.
