Satan (eek!) the new Yonge & Dundas Square

behold TO's cheezy attempt at imitating Times Square / Picadilly Circus!

i heard that there are dozens of these all over Tokyo..

i agree with the source's comments about stuff like this.. i wish TO urban planners could be a little more creative in their vision of a large public square.. this is more like media overload

i've seen some amazing looking public squares in my time, and most of them consisted of nothing more than a fountain, trees and some statues..

hey hey... easy on the planners. The architects design the actual look of that horrible thing. Planners just help decide how high.. where exactly it goes..faces.

whoa... now that's a sensory overload... instead of simplyfing the things they mess them up even more. wow.

Dundas square itself is deadspace.

They should have made it like a mini dome so that it can be used in winter as well.

you know that you can't do anything on dundas square without a permit. my prof was telling me that one of his friends went with a group of ppl to test it out and they got kicked off the space in 15 min. all they were doing is knitting. stupid politics

btw, i also read that ryerson is going to have educational space in there, ie: classes and lecture halls

seeing rendering such as the one above, as well as the many "clone" condos all over the place, really pisses me of a lot.

these architects and urban planner don't give a shit about the way these structures effect the surrounding environment and mood... all they want is money. they don't deserve to be in a powerful position of an architect or urban planner with such a mentality

architects should always fight with the investors for the best interest of the community based on the budget.
and judging by the rendering above, this architect didnt say anything... it was basically designed by advertisers.

Soon in Canada you wont be able to breathe without a permit.

What an eye sore!! I REALLY hope they don't do that.

The best public squares that I've seen have been the simple ones, exactly as described by Emery - an open area with a fountain or statues and some trees. Bu then again, I think the whole focus of the square at Yonge/Dundas is for the city and corporations, as opposed to a place for the citizens of Toronto.

Haha soo true. You gotta feel sorry for tourists, who go to look at that. They probably left something much more beautiful at home to come to Toronto.

ooooo...concrete slab....
