Something that has been bothering me... CDJ100's
I know that lots of people are fans of the CDJ1000MK2's... however, in almost 90% of the videos I have seen from psy-parties.. No matter who the DJ is (Astral Projection, Skazi, IM, Guy Salama, etc) I see them using CDJ 100's in combination with high end mixers like Allen & Heath, Tascam, Pioneer....
What gives? What is it about the 100's that seem to be so amazing for Psy DJ's that they opt out of bringing in 1000's and get the 100's for a show.... and these parties I have been watching are HUGE venues.. It's not like they can't afford to bring in some 1000's... What am I missing in the spec sheet for the 100's that is soo tempting??
Can anybody help me??? It's driving me bonkers trying to wrap my head around this...
Nice thread!
I've actually thought about this a couple of times too.. would be nice if someone could give an explanation!
Are any of the built-in effects on them used alot`? That could be a reason..
i'll trade mine for some cdj-1000's (mk whatever) if some craz psy head wants to trade!
It would be interesting to see if they switch to the cdj200s.
My guess is the same as Jeremy's; the effects.
The effects the CDJ100s have are Zip, Wah and Jet, I don't listen to as many psy mixes as J:\D, but I don't recall ever hearing these effects in a set...yet, I am also curious aswell, only thing I can think of is that they really are all they need so they don't care for 1000s, or maybe theres some kind of hidden special feature we all haven't noticed all these years.
Oh man, this is easy!
CDJ-100s are cheap. Cheap means more money for other "party favors"
Plus, I've never seen a psy dj really do anything insane behind a console (non live act of course) other than mix psy flawlessly. Psy isnt a genre that really is fucked with live like house...
My scale of how much a dance genre gets fucked with. (From lots to little)
1. Hip hop/dnb/breaks (a la turtablism) should i say more?
2. Techno, synonymous with 3+ decks
3. House, likes to be fucked with a lot, efx, layering tunes, loops, a capellas.. House is easy to do all this with
4. "prog house", less and less... the songs are fuller, less room to mess around
5. "prog trance/trance" (tiesto, armin, pvd, etc), even more so than prog house
6. psy, wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy to much going on to mess around too much.
And really lets face it.. psy djs are used to shitty consoles because of money/location issues.
I recently saw psychotic micro (fairly big name in the chemical crew) playing on a behringer 7000 (The one that looks like the djm500/600) and a denon 4000 dual cd.
Also, psy djs are less diva like and don't demand as much as lots of other djs because 1. they dont care 2. they probably wont get it anyways.
This is all my opinion, and i am fairly regular in the psy scene here, which is VERY active.
Almost all the psy-djs you mentioned are israeli.
the CDJ 100's have become standard over the years here in israel.
Plus, the CDJ 1000's here are really expensive. Now when you go out to psy venues and do them outdoors, you rather have a CDJ100 go bad and not a 1000, which costs double the money.

well the wah is just a filter, and the jet can be fun during breakdowns, but prob not so much in psy.
i just updated my 100 to two 200 and pio really stepped up the quality of this little cd deck for around the same money.
0.02% is a dream after playing around with 0.10% for so long. and the loop and beat cutter can be fun.
infinite beat cut plus jet effect ftw.
J:/Digital and dannyO havn't seen u too in a long time to what do we owe this honor?
anyway i think like stated above due to the location of psy events it better to break a cdj100 than a cdj1000

All the clips/vids I have seen recently are on Parties that are on a LARGE scale.. I am not talking like your 300-500 person Beachside Psy party.. I am talking like 6000-10000 person, massive stage/sound setup, multiheadliner dj list.. etc etc.. Would it really put a promoter that much out of pocket to give the DJ's something solid like the 1000's...
maybe their simplicity and brilliant antishock has allowed them to last. so would not require replacement...
0.1 pitch is fine for live, non studio mixes imo. quick loading...
id rather use some bog standard 100's than any other non pioneer cd player..

100s and 200s are workhorses and rarely ever breakdown. I've heard heaps of stories of 1000s fucking up and theres basically more things that can go wrong with them. 100s and 200s are basically the standard and have been at almost every psy party I've been to. Everyone knows how to mix on them and the fx are cool and get used heaps in mixes.

| Originally posted by Axolotyl I'd disagree there. Maybe not as much as breaks or techno, but I've seen a few Djs employ interesting techniques behind the decks. Mainly the use of fx and long layered mixes much like prog. Also using the cross fader to rapid switch between tracks can be a common technique. |
Well from my experance allot of time psy is in countrys that have a less evolved dj market (such as brazil) and thus the promoters are idiots when it comes to gear. Usually when iv played its been the classic 1210's 100s and a 600 (im sure pioneer is getting rich off all of this). Also allot of time the main act will be some sort of live show (infected mushroom, skazi) and they will bring allot of their own equipment and not request specific stuff. Since the lower down djs dont get to ask for specific equipment the promoters blag the setup from a local club. In the end its the promoters fault and really has less to do about the artists i beleive. Im sure that that psy djs would prefer better turntabels but they dont really care so long as they can change the tempo on them since psy isint the most developed of styles within the elctronica genre.
My initial thought would be that 100s are more "portable". You'd hesitate about bringing 3000$ gear to a party. In a club, it's a more stable environment, so it's much safer and you don't have to worry about breaking equipment as much. Plus I think often the expensive gear is really just for show, and psy culture tends to care less about that.

| Originally posted by DannyO haha, place is just too repetitive with the same threads, I still come here kinda often to check out threads, I just rarely post. Like JD said, I can't see that psy DJs use them cos thats all they can get, I understand maybe thats what they grew up with in there home country (if there from israel) because there cheaper, but some of these DJs are BIG now and play at huge parties that they could easily ask for the 1000s and get them, but you rarely seem them being used, from what I've seen its always the CDJ100s paired up with mixers like Xone32/62/92, Tascam X9, the usual DJMs and some higher end Vestax. I have a feelin its just all they need, I've seen loads of DJs use the 1000s and they don't use any of the extra features, what they did they could of done on the 100s, just might be abit harder due to the different technique. |
