MP3 Downloads (POLL)

How many of you pay to download MP3s?

Posted by Jem_hadar on Mar-13-2006 23:45:

Need a "both" option too!

And then I'd also be interested in how many tracks ppl buy vs. how many they DL (w/o buying).

I pay in different ways.

I have a subscription to some download sites, which have a good collection of dj sets. I feel the fee is justified because of bandwidth for the people who set up the site.

I also pay for soulseek priveledges.

I do not buy mp3s from iTunes, or anything of the sort. If i want an album, i buy the real thing, in FULL QUALITY.

Fuck you RIAA

Never have and probably never will, Although beatport looks very interesting. But for now I'll keep on getting everything for free and thats the way it'll stay.

yes in a way.

i download it first for free and if i like it i go buy it my way of supporting the sccene and artists i guess.

id consider paying but i already spend 75% of my cheque of clubbing.......

sorry producers.......I steal your mp3's on a regular basis.
at least i still support the scene (i think ive paid to see almost every dj now), so i say fuck it.

i do disagree with using stolen mp3's for profit thou.

I'm the same way. I try if possible to buy the album directly from the artist so they get more of the profit than the record stores. (most recent example; the Jelo new CD)
Or I go out and support them when they come to town. or both.

For Mainstream stuff I'll often download a song or two from an album, If I like both then I usually buy the whole CD. If I don't like em I delete them and save my hard drive for more important things.
I've spent over $10,000 on music over the years buying albums.

I find about 50% of the stuff I actually want these days are mix sets from DJ's that are being distributed for free by the dj's as promotion anyway, so that saves my wallet a lot.
As long as the artist is cool with it, then I am too.

Posted by rabbitjoker on Mar-14-2006 01:56:

I buy 100% of my commercial music.

Posted by dEsidEL on Mar-14-2006 02:04:

i only download music that i wouldn't otherwise buy ..

Posted by King Luis on Mar-14-2006 02:05:

i'll go see dj's and sometimes buy one of their cd's if it looks good. but i usually download dj sets which you can't find on cd's or single tracks that are impossible to find.
also. the full cd's that i do download of other genres, i will listen to for about a month or so then stop. so i don't see paying $15 for a cd that has only 12 songs that i will listen to for a month.

So you only steal things that you normally wouldn't buy?

I guess that makes theft ok then...

Lately I've been getting music from the Download thread on TA and it keeps me quite happy. Otherwise, I just download it from Limewire.

i hate this argument.
people will always make music, no matter if their "big" or "small"
i think people should make music out of passion and not for the money.

personally id rather listen to music made out of passion for it and not some fluff someone put out there to make a quick buck.

does it make it right to steal music? No way......will i still do it? absolutley.

Posted by slingshot on Mar-14-2006 20:56:

^^^^ i completely agree with you pett...

if ppl use that argument in regards to making music, you know they're making music for all the wrong reasons.

if you notice in music...ussually the best stuff comes from the ppl who don't care whether or not they're making money doing it....it's all the money mongers that put out the rediculous amount of CRAP music that is on the market today....

I almost exclusively buy all my mp3's.
Not to mention the stacks of wax that I have.

+1

music is artistic expression. who cares if nobody listens to it. the primary reason why you're a musician in the first place is to express your emotions and hope that you can move other people too.

Posted by Fir3start3r on Mar-14-2006 22:10:

I've never really specifically downloaded from an MP3 pay site, but I have bought CDs based on samples from artists that I found online or have seen live...

Using the same logic - you should go to work every day out of passion (and not for the paycheck).
