[Melodic Psy] jex - Tripping Vicariously [full 192] (updated)

I kinda wish I could have finished this one for psy unite. It's one of my better psychedelic tracks lately. One or two melodic elements, very epic.

The name comes from a dream I had where one person in the dream described an acid trip they had, and I saw in my mind's eye what they described. It was sort of like I was "tripping vicariously" through their tale. The strangest part is that I've never dropped acid myself, yet saw very clearly what the trip was like.

jex - Tripping Vicariously
14:40 | 20.1 MB | 192 kbps | 150 BPM
Made in FL Studio
Synths used: Tweakbench Padawan, AudioRealism Bassline, Tweakbench Pressure, 3xOsc, Synth1, Superwave P8

Enjoy.

The intro is really interesting. It's BOTH epic and an acid trip. It's more like acid trance than psy trance, but there are some other elements that say otherwise.

The intro strings seem to linger too long in my opinion.

THe clap you add later seems like a low-grade FL sample. I don't think you should keep it.

What a great assortment of acid bangs, bleeps, blops, and feedback rumbles. This proves that psy trance doesn't have to be in that arabic scale to be trippy (I still consider myself new to the genre).

Still more strings... but the acid dins make things interesting.

The breakdown seems ominous enough. Loads of effects and reestabilishment of the central groove seem to make it a winner.

This is one of those psy-trancers that doesn't live off the uber-low, brooding, evil, rolling bassline. The mood here is more like a video-game, and to be honest with you, I like it alot.

The rest of the track seems to survive from effects, and a jungle-jim of synthy riffs that are very good, but seemed to be building up to something.

The remaining riff-element seemed obscure and inspired in part by Infected Mushroom. The strings are back... and I almost wish they were varied a little more to suprise the listener after a few loops. One variation would put a smile on my face.

Whoa! This was a long track. THanks for sharing.

yo jex.

i like the classic but 'non standard' strings you use at the beginning. really haunting.

they build a nice deep atmosphere.

kick comes in - this sounds great. really pro! sounds like the stuff my friend listens to when she takes mushrooms... the hippie LOL.

overall the sounds work really well together. i wouldnt buy this but im sure loads would.

only crit is that the strings sound a bit out of time in some places..

good work jex

Listening, I concur about the stirngs, nice draamtic feeling, that filtered synth opens very well, I really like the bunch of synths that appears, but the intor sia bit long for my taste, the jump was a bit dry though, i was expecting some crazy pans with the drums and a reversed sound to open B sectiom, but that's only my my personal taste .
Instead a clap, I would use a clasic 909 snare, the clap kinda feels too weak for this tune though, 7:00 great synths, now here I am beginign to like alot this, now classic psy bass appears and all begins to sound really, cool, the clap stills being out of place imo, I would use the snare .
In overall, nice production,I would do better the first transition and would change that clap, my prefered part was the last one, since 7:00, the intro did not appeal me too much, but the end it's great, good job .
Kopi =o.

Four_On_Four-er: Thanks for the review. You're right about the strings. They need some variation in some spots. In some places, I like the mood their repetition sets, but others, it'd be nice to, as you say, "surprise the listener."

You're also right about the clap being a FL sample, but you're wrong about me changing it . I wanted to go for the cheesy handclap of old with that, and what's cheesier than a floops sample? Particularly, it was supposed to work with the kind of "plasticy" sounds on the kick and bass.

Rich: I'm glad you liked it. The strings may sound off-beat because they are. It's something of a lead-in to the next measure, the intent is to provide a bit more flow.

Kopi: Thanks for the comment about the first transition. It always felt a bit sudden to me, but I wasn't sure if that was just me or not.

Like I told four on four, the clap is there to work with the kick and bass in the same sort of "plasticy" vein. I tried the 909 snare, but it seemed too ernest for me.

I'm glad you guys liked it.

Nice dramatic strings. Maybe a little too synthetic. I like the offbeat feel to it. The panning whip fx is great. Your complex bass line pattern is awesome!

2:00 the strings come back too soon IMO. They could be added back in the mix towards the middle of the tune.

2:11 awesome hihats layer.

5.35 layers seem a bit congested. Alot of different sounds competing for space & it comes out sounding a little confusing.

7.22 great new synth pattern
7.40 nice
10.00
10:40 another awesome layer. The ping pong is very effective.

I enjoyed this track Jex. There are so many sounds weaving around each other. The second half of the track is much better than the first half, I started to get right into it at the 7:00 min mark. When the beat kicks back in at the 7:5o the tune takes new form; The structure gets better & you fit the layers together like a magician swirling up some magic.

6/10 for the first half of the track

9/10 for the second half of the track.

Very interesting track here jex.

I'll start off with the cons...

I think the mixing needs more work, mainly in the percussion area. Some of the elements seem to lack a bit of definition. Dont think the hats stand out too well. I'm listening on pretty shitty headphones though so that could have something to do with it.

That chord progression that gets carried over from the start goes on for a bit too long too I feel. Giving it a break and bringing it back in could work.

When it all gets going about 3-4 minutes into it, I really started digging it. Haps of layers and depth to this tune. THe sounds are processed very nicely too.

That little melody around 4.30 is very cool. Nice touch there.

Break at 7.22 is nicely timed. Loving all the atmospheric pulses.

Great track, this is proper trance. Slipping sliding journey through sound. The structure and synth programming is quite good. The elements compliment each other very nicely and I like the hypnotic feel to it. Nice work, the best I've heard from you I think!

I think I am hallucinating.. I am 100% I posted in this thread like an hour ago...

Anyways.. had a listen.. Awesome track.. a bit long IMO, but loved it none the less.

Thanks for the reviews, guys. I've been doing some work on it, mostly pruning at the pad section. I'll look into the mixing, too.

Holy shit
I was first listening to this track last night at like 2AM when I got home and yeah, this one was aptly named. It got me tripping very much (without any drugs involved). It's one of those tracks that you can get totally lost in. Tracks with this trippiness have become very rare. It feels like a journey. This one does not really sound like Hallucinogen, but the way my mind is tripping to it reminds me of the time I got hands on the "Lone Deranger" Album. I think the Hallucinogen comparison is no exaggeration, you've got a MASSIVE track here!
But let's see from beginning to start.

Good dramatic intro. The beginning is drenched in acid, sounds very good.
That additional "scratching" layer of percussion is very nice, it fits perfectly for the track.
The closed hihats sound thin at first, but I wouldnt change anything about it since they fit well with the track, too much would distract the listener from the actual center of attraction, the melodic layers.
The kick is very good, you did an awesome job with mixing it. Same goes for the bassline which is galloping forward very well. Despite so many layers the bassline is still present without being distracting. Really an awesome job with it.
Kinda speedy track, but I like that a lot. It supports the "trip" feeling very well.
3:00 ... here the track really picks up drive. So many lovely FX that literally contribute to a Psy-ocean. The track has a very "liquid" feeling to it, and your mastering contributes a lot to it. Excellent job.
The clap is indeed a little cheap. I can live with it though.
4:18 ... another layer of melody, sounding very nice! Almost didnt notice the change, and we have already 5 minutes passed.
Little breakdown here, with nice percussions.
I think the string loop lasts a little too long, maybe you should use an alternate theme after some time.
Various breakdowns in the midsection now. The track flows kinda well with all the various melodies. This is the most danceable part of the track.
8:30 is kinda nice, getting a little mysterious and dark. That floating pad @10:05 is totally awesome.
Again a little atmospheric breakdown now, leading us straight into the oceans of acid again.
What a fantastic ending!! Though the track constantly stays at a relative high level, this is definately the massive climax like it should be. 12:55 holy shit!!!!

Wow, Jex. This is definately by far your best track! Too bad this wasnt ready for the mix (Warm Spell was a good track nevertheless, but at least in my opinion far away from this track).
This is one of the most trippy tracks I've heard for a long time. A track that feels like a huge trip indeed. The track is very long but you know, I love long and epic tracks. It's not a second too much. I listened to it various times now and it doesnt get boring at one single point. And about the mixing: I totally love how you put the layers together. Every element contributes to the overall sound which makes this one feel so liquid. And the melodies are awesome, very mysterious and trippy. Plus something about this track is very unique.
I would not change anything about this, there are only little details I could complain about.
But seriously, it has become one of my top10 Psy tracks.
I cant say how much I admire you for sharing this awesome track!

ahah 1,1 mb/s download speed !!
Downloaded 20.1 mb in 17,8 secs. woohoo.

nice combo of the low/high strings.
ahhh GREAT ACID underneath there!!
very nice fx going on nice kick too btw!
this stuff is soo cool man !
really like the tomlike percussions!
that deep "woowowowow*delay*" synth you hear around 5:13 sounds really 1998 man ! nice still !
I like the break around 7:16, great feeling when you throw in the kick.. but Id do just a a kick, bassline and the 1998 synth you hear again around 7:43. and then throw everything in again.. woo
thats how I build tracks lol.. you shouldnt do that coz it sounds great now hehe..
I like the part from 10:38 the least.. it sounds like a really old need for speed 2 soundtrack there .. outro is very energetic! thats good!

Id rename the track to Groupies collector...

*bump*
Any Filteria track is crap compared to this, seriously...
What a fantastic track... Best track posted here since ages :P

Soon I'll be doing a Goa mix, if you agree I'm gonna include this tune

Breathtaking production mate, one of the best tracks I have heard this year (and this isnt my kinda musical taste as such), thats no exaggeration. The best track i've heard around here for a long time too. This must have took you an absolute eternity to make!

Theres nothing I can say really as it has been said already but I have not heard anything this epic whilst still maintining it's quality in a long time. A very warm well done on this one mate.

Posted by thoughtlessjex on Mar-19-2006 20:03:

I updated the link. Not much was changed aside from compositional changes in the area of the pads. I banged out a new progression for them with something of a melancholy twist to them now. May or may not be a good thing.

There are a few things changed on the mixing front. Mostly small things. I put some distortion on the clap to try to fatten it up.

Cybernetika: Thanks, man! That means a lot to me, coming from you. Although:

quote:
Warm Spell was a good track nevertheless, but at least in my opinion far away from this track

(I think you mean Apoplexy. Warm Spell didn't go into Psy Unite. )

But yeah, feel free to use it in a mix. If you want a higher quality render, just PM me.

Takkra and Semirk: Thanks a lot! Good to know it's appreciated.

Also, Go Tar Heels!

hello.... how's it going??

cute acid sliders in the beginning....
kick is cool, so is teh acid!!!

liking the low freq squelching action around 3:22
just curious, what pluggies do you use for your squelch??

this one sorta floats around rich sounding repetitivity for awhile breaks down around 7:00... the kick comes in again, perrty intense... feels like its building up again... i feel like i'm waiting for some intense lasery whippy sounds (shows you where my head's at ) i would just consider checking the length, it kinda seems a little long... good stuff, but seems it should be shorter . 12:50 is very cool .

anyway, see you later

Posted by Rinster on Mar-20-2006 21:23:
