great interview!

love this part:

B: Do you feel that production standards are as high these days as they have been in the past?

S: Not always to be honest. I think for example the "sidechain compression" revolution is making producers lazy and many of them are starting to sound the same. It's that backbeat rush of volume you hear after the kick hits, whether it's a bass or a string. It concentrates all of the sound on the kicks and claps and makes for very up and down music. It's an easy technique to make records thump, but it also makes them one dimensional and generic at times. The equipment these days is higher tech, but it's also easier to use and people have a tendency to overlook the intricacies in music when a shorter road is offered to them. I'm down with trendy techniques, but I'm always careful about balancing them.

Even though I love that effect, (just look at my sig) he has a great point.
