Is Global Underground still the compilation king?
Just looking for opinions here. I was just looking at all the awesome GUs on their website and noting all the ones I have and the ones I missed. I love 13, 9, 7, 4, 6, 3, 16 but have the newer ones gone down in quality? I love Involver to death but all the new Nick Warrens, Deep Dish, James Lavelle...just doesnt have the same feeling as the older ones. With the Balance and Renaissance putting out very strong showings in the last few years is Global Underground losing it's magic? Is GU no longer the must have compilation?
My opinion is the lack of quality released from GU is killing them. Fundacion is a hit or miss with most TAs and it missed on me. Nick Warren is a great DJ but to have so many GUs so close together turned me off from the compilation. Balance keeps getting better and better and Renaissance has always been top notch to the point where it might have passed up GU.
Or is there a compilation that blows all these out of the water in your opinion?
i've been digging the fabric series lately -- at least in terms of putting out interesting stuff.
gu has indeed disappointed with the last few releases.
They need to get some fresh artists to do GU's...the last one I really liked was Danny Howells Miami, Fundacion I dont think really counts as its not really a part of the series.

Bedrock don't release as many cds but Original Series: OS_0.3 - Luke Fair and Layered Sounds 2 aint so bad
edit: didnt see above but yeah what he said, when's the next OS coming?
Ministry Of Sound
'96-'01
in a word, no.
There is something about GU that draws me in and strangely makes me look forward to the next release. I own 1, 3-28 plus all the nubreeds. I've enjoyed just about all of the GU's bar 26, which was absolutely terrible.

There's some good ones in there, but none that I've heard that compare to the early-mid GU releases. On a different compilation related note, there should be more Bedrock OS releases. I agree with Clovis, though. They need some new blood. Lee Burridge should do one. |

| Originally posted by Clovis86 It seems like the GU series is completely lacking in tie-ins with the place they are supposed to represent nowadays. For example Warren Shanghai...I mean...wtf that coulda been a set from anywhere. Danny's Miami did a pretty good job of catching a good South Beach chilled vibe, but I miss comps like GU019, 013, even 024 that really seemed to convey the atmosphere of the place they were named after. |

That's 6 releases in 9 years...hardly anything to complain about in regards to excessive frequency, IMO.
027 proves otherwise, excellent album. The other compilations are good too though

Also, I think GU is feeling the squeeze of the compilation market, hence why they are moving towards more artist-type (Lostep and UNKLE) and concept albums (Fundacion). |
I think the Balance series is kicking every other compilations asses out there

Start of CD1 Mystica - Bliss (mystica mix)
does
ISOS
Politics of Dancing
count ??

As much as I don't want to admit, I strongly feel that GU has long lost its edge. There are a number of superior mix compilations from other labels like, Fabric, Balance, and Renaissance.
GU needs to ditch the same DJs they hire over and over again and give more chances new talents.
