Fine Day & Halcyon

This is another thing I should have posted ages ago.

Is it just me, or is Holden's "Fine Day" a hell of a lot like Orbital's "Halcyon & On & On". They are in fact, in the same key

Anybody else here noticed how they would go really nicely together in a mix?

Jane & Barton - Fine Day
then
Opus III - Fine Day
then
Orbital - Halcyon
then
Orbital - Halcyon & On & On
then
Miss Jane - Fine Day
then
Kirsty Hawkshaw - Fine Day

am i missing anything?

fine day has gotta be the most re-used tune of all time. Ive heard tons of identical songs. I like em too tho hehe

James Holden remixed Kirsty Hawkshaw - Fine Day in 2002, it's not his original work. Kirsty is the original vocalist of Opus III who remade Jane & Barton's song back in 1992. Then later in the same year Orbital borrowed her voice from the Opus III version to Halcyon and flipped the vocals backwards and some months later reworked the track into Halcyon + On + On and ever since It's A Fine Day / Fine Day has been remixed remade and raped to death almost on a regular basis, latest take on it this year by the Finnish duo Dallas Superstars.

The vocals in Halcyon and Halcyon + On + On are taken from Fine Day but have been reversed. That's why they sound almost but not quite exactly similiar.

lol. i hear ya. we could draw a diagram to illustrate the travels of the vocals.

Posted by GrimReaper on Mar-22-2006 11:03:

Haha yeah with all the dozens of tracks and artists using the vocals or remaking some version of It's A Fine day.

i saw a music video at a bowling alley here in Santa Barbara, CA and it was this girl with a shaved head singing "Its a fine day"...what video was this?

That would be Opus III - It's A Fine Day. Perhaps the only time a dead starfish has been used for head decoration in a music video.

Dallas Superstars made a new version of Fine Day, but it sucks.

If you like 80s indie style rock then it might be worth hunting for you as that's what Jane's original version of the track is like. I don't find it to be anything special but A Guy Called Gerald's '92 remix of the original is quite interesting take on it. I personally prefer Opus III's version with Kirsty Hawkshaw doing the singing though.

So true.

it is clear now

So, has any DJ ever put two of any of these next to each other in a set?

harro?

Posted by vinnie97 on Mar-24-2006 06:45:

Yea, agreed...A Guy Called Gerald's version is one of my favorite mixes with it's old skool breakbeat approach. There's another trippy breakbeat take done in 1999 by Ivan Gough & Phil K: http://www.discogs.com/release/73037

*shameless plug* Hear it in a set I compiled here: http://www.mixdepot.net/origin

Finally, there's a long lost Way Out West remix from circa 1996 of this that never made it past the record label's vaults and seems long lost (even Jody himself has purportedly lost it).

To say I'm dying to hear it would be an understatement.

Yeh i remember hearing some talk about the WOW mix long time ago but nothing much more. They remixed several huge classic tracks back in the mid 90s so it's a shame this remix never surfaced officially.

I'm gonna say it again...

..."harro?"

Posted by GrimReaper on Mar-24-2006 10:18:

So that you would become all "quiet" i must say no, i have never heard any DJ putting the 2 tracks after each other in a set.
