Coachella 2006: General Information
Hey all ... planning on attending Coachella for the first time. I have some basic questions to start this off:
(1) How late do the Main Stage acts go?
(2) Are all the DJs segregated to the Dance Tent and how late does that go? How long are the sets for the bigger names?
(3) Am thinking of doing the overnight camping option: anything to look out for there?
Any information is much appreciated.
Re: Coachella 2006: General Information
(1) How late do the Main Stage acts go?
A. They go until midnight
(2) Are all the DJs segregated to the Dance Tent and how late does that go?
A. Yes. Midnight
How long are the sets for the bigger names?
A. Usually an hour - hour and half at the longest.
(3) Am thinking of doing the overnight camping option: anything to look out for there?
DON'T CAMP!!!! Get a hotel!!! You will thank me later.
Thanks for the quick reply!
Any other tips for a first-timer are much appreciated, especially where lodging is concerned. We're worried about the legendary traffic getting in and out which is why we considered the camping option.
Get there AT LEAST an hour before the gates open, you will get good parking and your exit will be rather fast. It can take over 3 hours to get out of that parking lot (make sure your group stays together as it is VERY easy to loose someone in the dust that is kicked up after the show). As far as camping goes it is impossible to sleep with all of the commotion going on all night long. The showers are a nightmare in the morning, and after an entire day of dancing in 105+ degree heat you will NEED a shower. Make sure you take towels to dab off exessive sweat and I would also suggest baby wipes or something like that to wipe your body off because after about 6 hours you will feel disgusting from all the sweaty people touching you. I am not sure what the policy is this year regarding camelback's or any type of water container but MAKE SURE YOU STAY HYDRATED!!! AVOID ALCOHOL, it is your worst enemy in the heat. You will dry up before the sun even goes down if you drink booze all day. There are many many amazing things to see at Coachella, anything from student films to industrial sculptures, don't stay in the same area all day, wander around and take in the whole EXPERIENCE. Coachella isn't just about the music, it is also about art.
Just a side note: DO NOT BUY DRUGS AT COACHELLA!!! They work a huge undercover narcotics unit at the festival. You have like a 50/50 chance of getting busted.
Just my two cents;
-Some "dance" acts have played outside the tent.
Basement Jaxx, Thievery Corporation, Air and Zero 7 to name a few. One year Groove Armada played in a non-dance tent. So you really don't know until the schedule is released or it says "In the Tent" like it
does this year for Daft Punk and Madonna.
-Some of the DJ sets have gone as long as 2 hours. But are usually 90 minutes.
-Traffic is a nightmare from the main road only. If you go the back way then its pretty easy in and out.
-Camping can really suck if its windy and/or cold at night. Which it has been in recent years. But hotels this year sold out faster than ever. Good luck finding rooms now.
-2 years ago Radiohead ended the Main stage early and everybody moved to the Dance tent to see Kraftwerk. Expect the Dance Tent to be packed this year, but once the headline act goes on expect the crowd to die down some after 15 minutes and non-dance fans grow bored with the music and go home.
-More than anything, expect it to be MEGA-HOT and don't buy, sell or take drugs in the open because there are TONS of undercover agents in the crowd and people getting busted all over.
But all in all Coachella is the best event of the year.
There's lots of good info in the Veterans helping newbies thread at the Coachella boards.

put a lot of sunscreen on before you go in or if you are allowed to bring it in with you, then bring some. wear a hat and bring some shades. and once inside, be sure to hydrate. youll thank me later.
I already bought the camping ticket and the 2 day pass. Should I be alright sleeping with the shure noise canceling headphones.
Edit: what's the drinking fountain situation like inside?

It's always a 50/50 split between people shouting versus hotels & camping.
IMHO, I like real showers, real bathrooms, and a clean bed. And, I like having 8h sleep/night so I can party the rest of the weekend...
Everything ends at midnight (well except the car line, that starts at midnight). We've found the best way to minimize the line is to park as close as you can to the exit and walk. The day walk isn't that bad...the night one can seem like it's forever, but once you get to your car and can sit, it's like heaven. We usually can get out in 45min (20min walk, 20min line out to the streets).
Assume every act is 1.5h. The "bands" play less cause they have to tear down/set up. The headliners just get more time cause they're special. Most DJs can just flow into the other set, so they usually get the full 1.5h.
I have some camping info; just pvtmsg me, and I'll send it over.
About water: there are 3 ways to go about it:
a. You're not really human, so you can drink very little of it and/or tons of booze (this isn't most people).
b. Buy 1/2 waters and fill them up @ the fountain. This plan takes time (cause there are always lines @ the fountains).
c. Just buy $2 waters.
I'm on plan C. I budget $40/d for water (thats 15 waters plus $5 in tips for ice, etc...) Yes, I spend more on water each day than my hotel room.
I also don't eat @ the festival (we eat in the morning, and then at noon outside, and then at 1am after we get out of the show); that saves $, but a lot of people need to have food throughout the day. It just works for me.
(other info on next post).
Figure it out :)
Alas, because of inane laws, you can't be nice. Always be smart, and look out for yourself: NO ONE ELSE WILL.
Don't share.
Don't buy.
Don't sell.
Don't be swayed by bouncing breasts.
Don't be swayed by young, naive-looking guys.
Don't use the bathrooms (huge tip).
Don't trust the security guards (yellow/blue shirts); they'll sell you out too.
Do look at shoes & socks.
Don't be stupid.
Remember, of all the police in the area (plus who knows who else comes in from city/county/state/fed...):
10% aren't working Coachella.
30% are directing traffic.
60% are working the show (undercover + non-undercover).
Do the math.

Alas, the irony didn't come through well...
If you don't have water in the desert, you die. Don't do plan A.

I got to add a few things about camping if your going to do it. Be sure you have all your supplies and know how to set things up (I had no idea since I borrowed the tent and set it up at 2 am after day 1 ). Make sure the tent is big enough for the amount of people you plan to keep in it plus your stuff, unless you just want to use a sleeping bag to sleep in for the night. Park your car in the right designated area as it will get towed. I watched a crew of tow-trucks haul cars that were scattered over the parking lots. Also the phone service is abysmal out there and my phone has only worked about 10% of the time out there so take walkie-talkies to find your friends. Have fun I'll be out there too and probably camping it
what a mutherfuckin mission yo...........coachella....? fuck that

1. No. You have to hike it.
2. People aren't going to steal the tent; just the stuff in it. Lock it (or move everything back to your car that morning).
3. You get a 7x7 space that is yours to do with what you want. So, no.
Thanks for all the info. I really appreciate it.
Now a couple more questions if you all don't mind.
1. Are the COACHELLA camprgounds really noisy? Are there secluded areas or is your tent basically 5 feed away from somebody else's? I'd really like a more secluded or quiet part of the camp area since I want to sleep and not participate in the rowdiness. Any suggestions? because I already bought my COACHELLA camping tix.
2. Are there any shaded areas of the campgrounds? Do other campsites have shaded areas?
3. What is the REAAALLLL age group of the COACHELLA campgrounds? I'm in my 30s.
Sorry for all the questions but I'm travelling from quite a far away place and I'd like to plan.
Thank you very much.
