Armada Night @ Space 3/22/06 Review + pics

Yeah so where to begin...

I had stated about not attending this event.

I lied.

I had personal reasons for that, but it was nice to see everyone surprised to see me out there tonight.

Now onto the review.

Matthew "Tooth" Decay.

This damn fool played an elevator set; it kept going up and down, up and down. He would play tons of monotonous, housish crap, then bring in some good prog trance, then back to the crap. He only played 2 good songs which made me come alive:

Above & beyond - Alone tonight (???? remix)
Underworld - Cowgirl

Hearing Cowgirl live was awesome. Got video of that, will upload it soon.

Other than that, I was pulling at my teeth at how horrible Dekay was, set wise. You lose. NEXT!

Markus Schulz...

/blunt I am not really a Markus Schulz fan. /blunt. People will shun me for that but I don't care. That's how I feel. Too much prog puts me to sleep. The last time I saw him @ Space was on 11/22/03...the first time I ever partied with TAs...and he ripped it that night.

Deja Vu.

Markus gets my pick as DJ of the night. Track selection, mixing, crowd interaction, everything. Highlights include:

Without you near
Marco V - False Light (Markus Schulz remix? <- Arturo gave me this 411)
Above and Beyond - Air for Life (???? remix) <- REALLY NASTY hard banging remix. Absolutely incredible.
Way Out West - Killa (Orkidea remix) <- I freaked when this song came on.
Hammer & Bennett - Language (Santiago Nino Dub Tech Mix) <- Thanks TiestoLIVE for reminding me about this quality tune.

Forgot the rest of the IDable tracks but it was all stuff I liked. Just awesome. IMO the crowd had more fun to his set than Laughing Boy, who I'm about to review now.

Armin van Buuren...

#3 DJ in the world.

Um...what the FUCK was he thinking?

Playing nothing but monotonous progressive garbage which went NOWHERE. I KNEW he wouldn't be able to top his Trance Energy set, unless he does that as I write this review, but by now I don't really give a fuck cause I torn open an old wound, I'm dead tired and sober. Armin absolutely STUNK last I left. Suzy Solar, Lis, Anthony, Mel, Vade, almost everyone I talked to on the way out agreed so it wasn't just me, but we won't know how he rounded up the night until it's over in 2 hours and ten minutes from the time I post this review. But let it be said I could NOT handle more than 35 minutes of his set before I threw up my hands and just left. Something TOLD me to stay sober tonight. Boy am I glad as fuck I did.

MASSIVE TA turnout, including Ali (musiqzone) from CT, LATAs Michelle (sweetcandy girl), kris (Neinerlove) Robert Stern, Carrie, I THINK I saw Phillipe but I was so aggravated by Armin I didn't say hi. Joey (BitchBoyNYC) had arrived shortly after I did with Beth (Destynee), my ex-fiancee. I miss you again already.

Bottom line: Jem was defntely right about Markus owning in Toronto @ the Guv, cause the Schulz did the same for Space tonight.

Kudos to you Markus. Keep up the good work.

Armin, trash the prog and go back to your Trance Energy 2006 set and take some fuckin' notes, ya n00b.

One very much IN PAIN DarkAngel.

Pics and videos coming later.

Nice meeting the west coast TA's!!

I'll be there next friday just not in LA ;\

Anyways. I'll keep it short and simple cuz i'm sleepy and I have to work soon.

MDK - is just nice to look at. Got in when BAD was playing and I adored that 'send me an angel' remix

MARKUS -
FUKING OWNED. I hope this shows Club Space that Markus needs to be here more often.

Armin -
I could only take the 1st hour before getting uber bored. The only highlight in that hour was when he dropped Elevations remix of that Basic Perspective song?? And Mikey went up and pulled the horn twice. aww so cute.

1 song after that I pretty much left.

Good night

Anthony (SolaceDJ) and Lis (FallingMoon) are behind us as well.

Markus during his set:

Fog from the C02.

/smartass I think we can guess who's holding the hearts for Markus. /smartass

Okay, you're a n00b if you don't know that's sweetcandy girl and neinerlove, with Robert Stern in the fray as well.

Oh and Michelle!

More pics in next post.

Al (el.maestro) and Felipe (LiquidX) are on the left. LOL @ rabbit ears.

And a group of laser/light shots to end my pics.

End pics.

May I also add: the security guards were being extra assholes tonight regarding cameras. They actually went into the crowd a few times to warn people about them. Way to go, Space. More cool points for you and your gorilla flunkies. Fuckin' assrammers.

Can't wait to see everyone else's pics!

i heard that MDK was tearing it up, armin no surprise as usual, markus as usual no surprise he put on a good set in his old stomping grounds, good review DA

Armin was a complete disappointment ....markus and dekay were better.... i hope blank & jones are good tonight

Posted by PatMcGroin on Mar-23-2006 13:42:

i knew armin couldnt do a repeat of the set he threw down in october. armins never exactly been the poster child for consistency.

how was the line at space? was there room to dance or were you guys packed in there like sardines? drink prices insanely high again this year? how much is it this time?

that laser looks kinda weak... did space buy a used one? lol i wonder if they'll have it after conference or if they're going to get rid of it. hmmmm

lis, THANK YOU for the call during do what u do! wish i coulda been there.

When me, Beth and her crew arrived at Space, they had let everyone in already, so there was NO line, much to our shock. Parking was only $10, and it really wasn't that packed this time around. Some people were still being stupid though, dancing like they owned the dance floor. I stayed completely sober so no idea about the drink prices, Flo.

Stomping grounds is an excellent way to put it, Neil, cause Markus did just that. One thing I notice about his interaction which is unique to him is how he "loves" the crowd back. How he appreciates them. It's something I don't see much in other DJs.

And thank you. I give my best in my reviews.

Armin pulled a PVD @ Spirits.

Markus went on once again to show that the local DJs can outdo the bignames (i.e. Edgar V > PVD) <- but I am NOT hoping for this Friday night. I got TOO much riding on this one. No offense, Edgar. /blunt

I don't think we'll have too much to worry about.

LOL

Loved the review Dark Angel. You're so blunt that it made me laugh.

That's too bad that Armin sucked ass last night for you guys. But come on, don't complain too much, its WMC, you can just go see another killer dj somewhere else.

*wishing I was in Miami*

Thanks, Ashley. I tell it like it is. Just an offnite for Armin I guess. As for other DJs, there was Meganite going on upstairs with Picotto and company, but that's another topic altogether.

May I also add that Matthew "Tooth" Decay is defintely better than DJ Remy in comparison. At least the Tooth played a few likeable tunes, but not many. Crowd interaction was average.

Posted by nfekted on Mar-23-2006 17:33:

Great night overall. To quickly recap: Got there around 9:30. There was a small line forming already. The Will Call was already there which was a great thing. Got my ticket, got in line and met up with Liz, Anthony, and saw Manny, Dp and friends.

Also met some girl who was a Toronto TA but forgot the name. (was cool jamming with ya girl!) Also met a washington TA too! GReat Trance addict turnout IMO.

Dekay's set was banging, but not great. Anyways, he surprised a couple of people let me just say that. I didn't get to see Markus' whole set but when I came in to check on it it was banging no doubt about it. As far as Armin goes, he didn't really do it for me. After 2 songs I was out, which isn't very fair I know but I already knew what was coming.

The terrace on the other hand was banging pretty much the whole time, after Greg Gowe that is. Mistress Barbara showed us great mixing skills(she's hot It was great seeing so many people supporting the techno. Adam Beyer was fucking great, I couldn't Id any track though so no comment lol. And then there was Mauro Picotto. Two words for you guys: HOLY SHIT! The muther f'er threw down a great fucking set from start to finish! The lizard man owned us!!!! After that I left. Great night.

Posted by Durrrtysouth on Mar-23-2006 17:38:

I just woke up from a few hours of sleep after my first party of WMC 2006.

I was a bit upset about last night to be honest. Let me start with Mathew Dekay. i love this guys productions, but IMO he banged it out WAY to hard for an opener. We walked in and you couldnt get your groove going. It was straight up fist pumping. I like to have a few drinks, mingle and get seduced by the dancefloor. Mathew did nothing for me unfortunalty, because he is one of the DJs I was really looking forward to finally hearing live.

Markus came on about 1am and we all gave him a homecoming reception that he deserves. We were all chanting "Markus MarkusMarkus!!!" Pretty soon the entire club was chanting. You could tell Markus reeally appreciated it because I saw him take a step away from decks and look at his entourage in the booth in amazement. Markus set was incredible. You can tell that Markus has been touring the globe for the last 2 years, because he looks so smooth and confident now up in the booth. Markus has always had a great connection with the audience, but its totally different now, I saw girls all giddy when he just pointed at them and smiled.

Some tunes I remember:

Air for life (WTF mix was that!!!! Holy shit, that was amazing)
CQ (some wicked electro remix)
Eighties
False Light (Markus Schulz bootleg remix) he has this on his myspace page!!!

Now let me vent a little!!!!

his last 30 mins he brought the energy WAY down.....just like all the locals do for the big trance headliners, and I was pissed!!! COME ON MARKUS!!!! WTF!!!! You are not a local anymore, we all came out to see you put on your show, not warm us up.

Then came Armin. He played too mellow. He started off playing songs that sounded like they were from Markus B-List. Even when he finally picked it up, the buzz and hype was gone. I couldnt even get myself excited anymore. Security were dicks as usual, so waiting patiently for my favorite DJs to build the sets was not a good idea. Whenever you would get just a little bit into it you got told by some bouncer "you cant stand here" "Move or your gone", or my favorite of the night " I dont know where the bathrooms are"....I have alwaysd hated security at Space. Worst in the entire business!!!

To sum it all up:

Mathew Dekay: Bro, you need to be patient. If you gonna open for Armada nights, then you need to build a nice groove, not bang shit out the minute the doors open.

Markus Schulz: You are no longer a resident Space DJ. We came to see you and your wicked basslines. Bring it the full lenght of your set!!!

Armin van Buuren: Dude this is WMC!!! Do what you are best at. give us the trance. Leave the prog trance to Markus, he does it better than anyone else on this planet, just like you do the straight up trance better than anyone on the planet. When you play Space you better bring it!!!!

To see Mathew bang it out, Armin play prog trance, and Markus end his set mellow like a local resident just didn't sit right with me!!!

I'll fill in some of the ID's as I think of them. Overall, I thought it was a great set. Didn't really think it was as progressive as everyone else has said. However, as you can see, his playlist tonight looks like any given "A State of Trance" radio episode, which has taken a turn towards progressive trance.

np Flo! I was like this is Flo's track haha

Holy fuckin' shit did Armin SUCK! I mean there isn't another word to describe that...I thought ok he'll build it up after a while...yeauh right I stayed till 6:30AM & nothing WOW except Incognition which he's been dropping for the longest...nothing new or amazing that I wanted to hear from his good ASOT's (not that he has many) w/e he is so wishy washy & unreliable that you just NEVER know. I honestly expected him to bring it like he did in October & he did come close.

Now MARKUS holy fuckin' shit did he ROCK!! OMFG I have NEVER seen/heard a Markus set like that...totally wowed the crowd & the TA's. His style has evolved so much & it was surprising too, I've been listening to him since 2003 & he has never played like that. The West Coast has def. changed his style & he was always good but now it's insanely amazing. I thought he would play like he plays on GDJB but nooooo way, at times it was hard to believe it was Markus up there...he was jumping, dancing, BANGING the shit out of Space...he belongs there IMO. He brought it HOME with a bang after not being there so long. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOW speechless lol

Matthew Dekay .......................................

um

no comment. Srsly retarded music. It was UP & down & down & UP & NO.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOORING. Send Me an Angel was the only good tune cuz that remix was awesome & it's an oldie so you can never go wrong there.

Good nite because I mainly wanted to see Markus & he was the one who highlighted the nite...Markus should have headlined IMO

Pics later, tooooo lazy & tired to post now.
