Not using the crossfader?
I've heard ppl that do their mixes without the crossfader. The only thing they use is the volume controllers?
How common is this and is it any good?
I can't survive without my crossfader

| Originally posted by DJ-Energy well.. as far as i've heard (dont have my equipment yet so i can't tell ya) most people use the volume faders because they have more control over their mix, im planning to use my volume faders 2, just leave my cross fader standing in the middle, probably use it 4 quick mixes.. or just other mixes such as pop/rap mixing (parties) |
well in theory its the same thing.. i don't see why someone would do that instead of the cross fader, i use both the cross fader and the volume controls..
when i get my equip i will try both
Most large night clubs (in the Boston/New York area at least) use Urei or Rane rotary mixers... and they almost always do not have crossfaders.
Something to keep in mind...

When I started I always used my Crossfader and then after watching a clip of Armin from EAU I saw him behind a big console mixer without a crossfader and tried just using my volume controls. I like it alot more, simply because when using the crossfader too, sometimes you need more hands than you have if you are using all 3 controls at the same time. Using just the volume controls you have total control to feel it and bring it in easily.
I would advise you to try it and see if you like it.
yea...i NEVER use the crossfader..i just use the channel faders and leave the x-fader in the middle the whole time..reason is because you get soo much more control with the channel faders that theres no need for a x-fader. just my 2 cents
i know a guy that doesnt use that crossfader...he just uses the volume..and he does a good job
well you see heres the ups and downs.
up of crossfader - one handed, quick and easy. but in all honest its not much harder to use one hand and sim up one vol and down another vol, just takes a little work... but all and all crossfader is fine if you want to do a quick transition
down of crossfader - most curves amplify the overall signal when its in the middle. I personally hate this.. if i do a slow transition i want it to be really backround, i consider i did a good job when my friends ask if its the same song playing. see with the vol control u can up one and down another a little, or up and whatever u want. it just gives you FULL control over everything, which when it comes to a progressive mix it really matters. if you like hearing the tiesto style mix (which i like at times), where you hear both beats hittin hard and its just a loud thump thump, then cross fader is cool. if u like those mixes where it transists amazingly, then use the volume.
use em both man
know everything, be a god
I personally use all options available, Crossfader, Volume Control & EQ knobs, why limit yourself to only one?
I keep the crossfader in the middle and just use volume faders. Its much smoother imo. I just get used to it.
I haven't really tried using the crossfader, between changing the highs, mids and lows and just using the gain and volume control, i have alot more control on how the two songs interchange with each other during the mix.
it's not always perfect sounding, yet, i have only been working on this for a few months now. I plan on buying a better mixer soon with a few more options, but for right now i got what i need and i'm tryin my best to make it work for me.
i mostly use volume faders for mixing..
but i mainly use crossfader when i need to cut or bring in eq's while moving the x-fader.. (i need hands)
thats something you cant do on volume controls unless you have 3 arms
I use both & the EQ's for mixing
EQ mixing makes for some pretty cool transitions

I use the cross fader most of the time...I sometime use the channel faders when I'm in the mood to...Personally I noticed that when I mix with cannel faders it sounds good in my headphones, but when I listen to my recored mix later it sounds crappy. Personally the only time I like using just the channel faderz is when I'm using rotaries...I ned to fit my mixer with some....
it is better to use the crossfaders for a reason that often the record level doesn't match (with the volume controls set at the same level, one record will actually sound louder) which means that the volume control should not always be at the maximum point for smooth mixing. but it is rather difficult to set it up to match the record level of the other record (only using the prefader graphs) very quickly, so normally it should be set up precisely, and the best time to do it is before the mixing
I am agreeing on using everything, more options more betta
well.. its not that you don't have enough hands, i use crossfader and volume controls quite easily, just use a finger on the volume and thumb on the cross fader, so basically one hand is doing both crossfader and volume control for that channel and u can handle the other volume control w/ your other hand.. personally my hands are all over the mixer because im messing w/ the EQ's at the same time, but i do that all throughout songs and transitions, i guess its just a matter of getting used to the equipment.. also some crossfaders have normal AND quick curve settings so that as you are starting to crossover, it goes immediately to max volume or it slowly blends, i prefer normal curve but i know people that prefer the quick curve better. recently i have been using the volume more because my crossfader is getting a crackling/static sound sometimes, i gotta get that fixed
