Why do the words "American" or "Unites States" bother Canadians?

I've been here 3 years and I have noticed that people here do NOT like hearing those words. Just yesterday, I was at a walk-in clinic, and the doctor asked where I was from. I told her "U.S.", and she goes " oh ur from the US, huh. Well we r not as fancy as the US and we treat our patients better." I'm like wtf? All I asked was for my test results. LOL.

Some more comments made by people here:

"Oh so ur a Yankee, eh. Yea you guys are bad news. Always invading people."

How come you guys always want to go to war

Now I'm not 100% sure Canadians are aware that the American people don't choose to go to war or create such policies but the American Gov't does but that is the case.

What I'm wondering is why is there such a bad liking for anything American? Is it in your blood?> or just personal preference- if so, why?

(Serious reply's please. Thanks)

inferiority complex.

its a cultural thing started by molson canadian commercials, fueled even further by incompetent media, our own stupid government, and that one time George Bush forgot to say "thank you" for helping out during the 9-11 thing.

the anti-americanism even pisses me off

*waits Jayx1's comment about Canadian inferiority complex*

Which is kinda true, since Canada does its damnest to differentiate itself from US. (No matter how similar both cultures are, due to transfusion of media in general)

Starts from the federal govt. Because anti US has always been popular in Canada ever since the American Revolution.

Also a lot of Canadians share a more liberal ideology.

Plus a lot of immigrants from country that got shafted or have a tradition of anti American stance.

US being hated by a lot of the world lately.

Seems like enough reasons for not wanting to be like Americans.

It's about time foreigners realize that it's us, the general population, that makes the decisions to go to war and talk shit about other countries, NOT the government.

Worm Popper

For a country that has 90% of its population within 300km of the border with the US, we sure do bitch a lot.

Not to mention our economic dependence (via trade) upon the US.
(99% of GM cars made here are sold in the US)

I dontlike that new abortion law theyre trying to put in place in atleast one state (though I think its a couple more too)

making it illegal to get an abortion for ANY REASON short of preventing a life-threatening circumstance to the mother!

FUCK THAT.

Pro Choice IMO

looking deeper at it, I am somewhat serious. My distaste for the US (relax a bit I am American as well as Canadian) comes largely for the leaders a vast percentage of the population elect. The general American mentality of superiority and being invincible is scary. The fact that the leaders preffer to hang out at home rather than work during national disasters is another reason I continually scratch my head wondering who the hell is dumb enough to vote these idiots in to power in the first place. The support they show for the poor and disadvantaged is minimal and really only shows up when there is a public outcry against the current state of things.
Redirecting billions of levee funding away from New Orleans to support a war that wasn't justified... if you want to pick wars why not take out the problems in the sudan/darfur region instead... millions more are being slaughtered there and it would be a much easier war and make everyone feel good about helping humanity.
Going back to the New Orleans issue, living down here and seeing first hand the neighbourhoods that get back to normal within weeks and then seeing the black areas of town STILL without power forces you to think a bit about bigger issues.

For the record there are a lot things I do like better about the US but this thread isn't asking for those kinds of comments.
I personally do feel that the care I get in the US medical community is of better quality as long as you have good insurance.

funny how canadians' superiority complex is born of inferiority. We pride ourselves on being less ignorant than americans and actually come off being MORE ignorant in the process.

Americans are our best friends and neighbours. Yes we have some fundamental differences and will disagree from time to time. But no one on earth is closer to being a canadian than an american. Our lifestyles, most of our ways of thinking and even our entertainment is pretty much the exact same.

However true this is, i find it interesting that canadians will voice loudly about american politics and have strong opinions, yet will do NOTHING when their own government is screwing them over. In fact most of the time, canadians dont even know whats going on in their own country, yet are busy mouthing off george bush or tony blair.

I'm sorry to hear the way you were treated at the clinic. I wouldn't have said that. But in my experiences with American's they tend to be pushy, rude, egotistical...and so on. I am in NO way saying that ALL american's are like that. I not only have relatives who are American, but I have met a lot of friendly American's. I guess it's just b/c many of the American's I've come in contact with seem to be like the stereotypical American jerk. But that's the way it goes with any stereotype.

Then I'm sure you don't miss the news stories of how controverisal the last two presidential elections have been.

Would it not be more fair to ask the Americans you meet who they voted for, rather than assuming they're one for whom you harbor distaste, based on the assocaited allegation?

I <3 everyone who doesn't give me a reason not to.

Posted by samhouse on Mar-30-2006 17:58:

my distaste is not for the american people and never has been. It is simply for the country as a whole's ridiculous notions that they are the be it and end all of this planet.

Oh and i really don't like their government
