This is a religious thing for Shiya muslims. the guy in the chair (imam) or priest if u wanna call him is giving a speech about the death of muslims in Karbla ... its a very emotional thing something that is taken very seriously among the shiya muslims. closest comparison i can give u is when Jesus is being put on the cross.
you can google the info more if you want.

its a long and complicated story which shares different iews among different muslim ppl. but in simple short way i can put this is that those muslim ppl kinda sorta hold themself responsible for the happenings at karbla. so each year during the month of muharam for muslims when this happened shiyas all over the the world wear black and take accountability. slapping his head beating themself on chest is somewhat extreme but in Iran and Pakistan shiya muslims go as far as hitting themself with kinves. to them its a highly religious act and something that is in a way of asking god for forgiveness.

you cant tell me that it doesnt look like the dude is having a good time...

Im not trying to be ignorant, although it may come off as such, but to me it seriously looks like the dude is having fun. You can even see him laugh.

In Iran they used to but now it's illegal.

but the whole process is just stupid and funny,,like who cares a thousand year ago in a war 72 people died cause they couldn't cross the river . it has happend many many times in history but cause of these 72 people each year they all start doin all these universal funerals!!

it's like most people wear black and they cry and scream and make so much traffic on roads...
And i remember myself beeing so againt them that on those days i used to dress up nicely and go chill with them,,they all used to give me dirty looks :P lol..fun times

obviously some people care..same way people care that jesus was crucified...same way people care that the nazis killed people because of their LACK OF TOLERANCE and BELIEF IN THEIR OWN SUPERIORITY!!!!

i know what you mean,,but i believe anything extreme is bad..
cause when you'r extreme you'r belief takes over your logic,,that's when you might think you'd go to heaven by killin some people!!

that goes without saying!!!

Posted by dEsidEL on Apr-03-2006 00:48:

speaking of extremities..

there are Catholics in some places of the world that apply self-inflicted wounds and actually even crucify (yes crucify) themselves in order to "cleanse" their souls of sin during the Christian Holy week.. an extreme view i do not share despite the fact I'm Catholic..

You should read up, ignorance begets more ignorance.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashoura

quote:

Day of Ashurah

The Day of Āshūrāh, sometimes spelled Aashurah, Ashurah, Ashoura or Aashoorah (Arabic: عاشوراء, ʿĀūrāʾ), is on the 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar and marks the climax of the Remembrance of Muharram but not the Islamic month. For Shi'a Muslims, it commemorates the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad at the Battle of Karbala in the year 61 AH (AD 680), and is a day for mourning.

Ashurah is also commemorated by Muslims as the traditional date on which Noah's ark came to rest, the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) was born and the Ka'ba was built in Mecca. Ashurah corresponds to the Jewish Yom Kippur, which was held by the Jews of Medina.

The word ashurah means simply tenth in Arabic; hence the name of the remembrance, literally translated, means "the tenth day". The scholars, however give various explanations as to why it is thus called.

quote:

The observance of Ashoura is one of the most important events in the Shia calender. Ashoura marks the anniversary of the martyrdom of Husayn, grandson of the Prophet Mohammad, in what is now Kerbala, Iraq. The death of Husayn was the beginning of the Sunni/Shia split, which persists in Islam to this day.

In the past, many Shia men have demonstrated their devotion to Husayn by letting their blood flow freely from self-inflicted wounds. Today, however, many governments have tried to ban this practice, with varying degrees of success. In Lebanon, the practice is permitted, and a bloody commemoration of Ashoura takes place in Nabatieh every year.

Most participants make a small cut on their head, and then beat the wound with their palm--or in this case a sword--to keep the wound open and bleeding.

Participants then march in groups around the town, yelling chants to express their devotion to Husayn and the Prophet.

I would highly recommed you change the title of your THREAD

TO

SHII MUSLIMS OR SOMETHING OF THAT NATURE

the above has HUGE religious significance and I don't think a lot of Sunni Muslims on here would appreciate the event being associated with the entire MUSLIM world...

I'm f'in offended!

Shias mark the assasination of their Imam Hussein (leader). There is a day that is marked with whipping themselves on the back to remind themselves of the day...I suppose it is ok to make fun of it becasue its all part of freedom of speech anyways
