LFO effect, how?

I heard this effect in a tune the other day and thought that it sounded really cool. I know it is done with an LFO, but don't know what exactly I would need to automate/tweak to achieve the end result. I have both V-station and Vanguard, could anybody explain how to get this great FX in any of those please?

Thx.

I'm sure that it would benefit quite a few of us on here, if one of you pro's was to give us a quick explanation of how this is done.

Thx.

P.S. From which track is that sample?

I don't believe that's an LFO there. What you're hearing is a looped sample increasing in speed.

Yea its the loop speed

Its Pete Lazonby - Sacred Cycles (David West Remix)

Its got some really nice FX in it, infact its a cracking track, I took it from ASOT 241, Armin started with it!

Of ocurse I know what an LFO is dillwad! I was asking what the sample in the piece I posted was. Sample - LFO, quite a difference me thinks.

Thanks for the help DJ Palm. How would you go about producing this effect then? I have battery 2 and I also have kontakt, would any of them be good for doing this in. Or should I just use the good old Fruity Sampler. I take it, its two different samples at different pitches then?

I'm not familiar with Battery or Kontakt but if you are able to, try loading a short vocal clip into the sampler, set it to a constant fw-fw loop and use the pitch bend to modulate it's speed.

Can you clarify What you mean by fw-fw loop?

Sure. Fw-fw (forwards/forwards) - denoting that each instance of the sample is played forwards every time, as opposed to fw-bw (forwards/backwards) which ping-pongs the loop forwards and backwards end to end.

Ferris, any chance you could share with us, how you made the LFO sound like that?

Cheers

Sure I can. Made it with v-station and the LFO's it has. I figured you wanted to do it the sample way as aquila said.
Wasn't sure if the example I made was exactly what you wanted.
Will post a little step-by-step later on, as I'm tied up right now.
BTW, it's farris and not ferris .

Doh, my bad.

A step by step would be cool.

Cheers Farris!

OK, here is what I did with V-station:
Before you start, setup a loop of 4 bars in your sequencer.
1) Load up patch 499, that's just an init patch. You can later on change stuff if you like.
For now a basic saw will do just to illustrate.
Add a little touch of noise to it though. 42 is a good value to start with.
2) Bring the Cutoff back to somewhere around 100.
3) Set lfo2 in the Filter section to its max, 63.
4) In the LFO2 section set both speed and delay to 0.
Now automate LFO2's speed from 0 going up to somewhere around 110 over the 4 bars.
Again, you can alter these settings to your likings.
5) Make a midi track, connect it to V-station, and let it play a sustained note over the 4 bars on C2 or whatever floats your goat .

If you now play this, you hear the sound being modulated by the lfo. But it isn't going up yet. For that you need to modulate the pitch.

6) On V-station go to 'Controls'.
Somewhere left of the middle there is a knob for pitch (under Mod Wheel). I've set this to 26.
7) Then IF you're using Cubase, go back to the midi track and in the key editor select CC1 (Modulation) from the dropdown menu.
Now draw a ramp going up from 0 to 100 again stretching over 4 bars.

That's it basically. You can add some FX to it if you like.
Some delay and perhaps a little bit of reverb.

Anyway, I'm not an expert on this. It's actually the first time I made such an effect
because I read your post and just started tweaking for a couple of minutes .
So there might be faster and easier ways to do this.
Hope this helps you somewhat and let us hear what you come up with .

LFO TWIST

Here's my effort, think its getting there. Thanks for the tutorial was realy easy to understand. So how would you get the effect I was after then, but with a sample as per the start of this thread?

EDIT: LFO TWIST WITH PITCH

Posted by farris on Apr-07-2006 14:59:

Sounds good, but it isn't going up in pitch . Think you missed a bit.
I might have a go with a sample and sampler later on tonight and post my efforts here if it's any success.

Pitch is easy. Hit and hold a low note, then hit a higherone. If you have a long enough potrameno glide set it will slide up in a controlled manner.. ;-)

As ever the cooler sounds have more than one thing going on..
