plz help me find a solution for hooking up my iPod in my car!

hi c0r! i need your help... ok? ever since i got my iPod for Christmas i've been trying to figure out the best way to hook it up in my car, preferably something i can install myself and something that's not going to cost me loads of money. i know the easiest option is the wireless FM transmitter but i don't want static interference and i can't justify sacrificing the sound quality from my head unit/speakers/subwoofer...

here's what i have:

� iPod video 30GB
� aftermarket head unit - Kenwood Z919 CD/MP3
� '97 Honda Accord LX coupe

here are the possible solutions i came up with:

� update my head unit to a double DIN CD/MP3 player with casette deck, get cassette adapter for iPod (probably the easiest solution but i'll end up dropping $250 on a new head unit)
� get a wired FM transmitter - Crutchfield recommended this one
� get an Aux input adapter to plug into the CD changer control and run RCA cable from the iPod, only problem is that my head unit is only compatible with the Kenwood C907 CD changer so i'm not sure if that would even work

what should i do?

i'm not expecting a ton of replies... but i know there are some people on here who are smart when it comes to car audio, and i'm sure many of us have iPods or other portable MP3 players. if any of you use the cassette adapter or wired FM transmitter i'd love to hear your opinions and thoughts on them. thanks in advance to anyone willing to help or offer me advice!!

i use my ipod with a wireless fm transmiter in my truck...and it works great

which transmitter? i used the MonsterCable one in my car one time and i was really disappointed with how fuzzy the sound was. i like having clear sharp sound. i live near a pretty big city so i'm also afraid of getting static interference.

the iriver fm transmitter works great. plug into cig outlet and mp3player and select any frequency you want -> profit!!

I just went and bought that cassette/cigarette lighter + fm transmitter peripheral for $50. I forget what brand it is, and I just use the cassette thingy, works fine for me and I couldn't be arsed to try and spend time messing around with the fm transmitter.

if you have a tape deck you can get one of those tapes that just plug into any headphone jack and there you go. $10

i've also read a lot of reviews on the cassette adapters and the general consensus is that most of them make a whirring/buzzing sound that is quite annoying.

i'm now considering trying this wireless FM transmitter, the Kensington 33185 Digital FM Transmitter... it seems to have gotten very good reviews, and i'm just too lazy to attempt to pull off my dash to install or hardwire anything. anyone use that one before?

FM modulator FTW! Thats what I have. You can buy one and have it installed for like 50 bucks total. Half the price of an fm transmitter, and you dont have to worry about fm interference or signal strength or anything.

Yeah I had one of those MonsterCables that take over your FM, and I must say I was never very impressed. There was always a little interference and it got progressively worse until it didn't even work at all. They're crap.

Quality wise, your best bet is to hardwire it to your system, you'll get the best sound, no interference and it'll charge it too.

My friend just got one and while the sound isn't crystal clear, it works pretty well and on eBay they're mad cheap.

thanks for the advice guys! i decided to order the Kensington FM transmitter/charger off Amazon.com - the reviews were good and it was the right style that i was looking for (i did not want a dock because i want to keep my iPod in it's leather case). it was only $60... once i get it i'll post back here and let you all know how it is!

personally....i couldn't be arsed to nigga-rig any music device, my music and quality of music is very important. take the time to hardwire it...easiest solution on most aftermarket head units is the AUX input (usually RCA) and plug in your left n right channels (red/white). then run the stereo connector (1/8") to the DIN box below the headunit. Save the cig lighter for your ipod car charger and if you're anal about shit like me, make sure all the wires are tucked away.

FM transmitters never hit that low-end bass frequencies that i desire, especially if you are running an amp'd subwoofer i'd highly recommend hard wiring it.

well $60 isn't too much, but if it sucks i'll probably eventually get it hard-wired... another reason i am kind of hesitant about hardwiring it is because i might buy a new car sometime this year. probably not though, i'd rather spend my money on vacations and going out, lol.

speaking of vacation ... can't wait till puerto rico.... 1.5months left...

btw it shouldnt require more than a $10 rca-mono wire and some time pulling the headunit out. you can just pull the headunit out alittle and reach behind the headunit to put the wires in.

i bought the shit that you plug into your cd changer OUT and it comes out as 2 rca jacks (red/white) and i just plugged an adapter to that will fit in my ipod and it sounds BAD ASS. especially when you use the ipod's EQ presets, those help out a lot. my car is really small and i have 8 speakers in there. i got a 2004 volkswagen bora

dont even bother with the fm transmitters or the tape adapter, those are for n00bz

this is true but i rarely notice it b/c i blast the music so loud


i have both cassette adapter and fm transmitter. the fm transmitter is a bit fuzzy so i always use tthe cassette adapter


best solution? buy a BMV! built in ipod system ftw

Alpine IVA-W200 ftw.

itrip auto comes in 2nd.

These other Alpine head units - DVA-9861, IVA-D100, and CDA-9857 - will also allow you to browse your iPod's contents from the head unit with Alpine's KCE-422i Full Speed Connection Cable (which is also required for the IVA-W200. The good thing about the IVA-W200 is that it is of double-DIN size and has a touch-screen interface.

Why did you even get an Ipod in the first place? There are many better options!

Anyway, get a decent FM transmitter that allows you to select exact frequency (cheaper ones only have a few preset ones), find a large empty gap between stations on your radio and use that.
