Why don't you compete in the ID contests?

ok so we're trying to figure out what could be done to get a larger participation / make things more fun for everyone...

if you don't enter the ID contests...why not? and if it's something you would like to do, but don't...what would improve things?

discuss...

I dont feel like downloading music samples.
Plus Trance Id's arent my strong suit. All other genres yes, but my Trance is out of date.Plus if you win you have to run the next contest...le hassle

well see the complaint these days is that it's not enough trance. and i'm sure if you didn't want to make the next contest...the runner up might be willing to

the other issue of hard drive space...well i dunno...it's only like 10mb or so

i actually thought about participating this current one, but it kinda puts you off when you see the results so far so soon and sand leaper is leading so much that no one will ever catch him. and i'm really fucking busy atm too, but maybe i will participate, if i can find the time.

so unless you feel you can win...you don't really feel like participating? what if the scoreboard was withheld until the end of the competition?

just wondering, is there much cheating involved in the contests? i mean of two people cooperate and help eachother out. is this common?

well i can promise you i don't cheat...and i believe most of the people competing are just playing for fun. i just really think sand leaper and some of the others are good at iding stuff...does it happen? i dunno honestly...but i would hope not.

see someone like yourself Rebel9...i'd bet you'd do pretty decent

well i know i will never win, so it's not that really. it's just somehow lame IMO that the first time the pre results are posted is so soon. IMO it should go to at least half way before posting those.

yeah i can see what you're saying. i mean they are usually updated in the next day or so probably mostly because some of us are pretty competitive about it hehe .

so aside from that...track selection a problem at all? do you think if we maybe we had two contests...maybe like a "contest winners ID contest" and one for people that haven't won yet, that more people would be interested? or would that make people feel dumber or something? would that make you feel more like you had a chance to win?

I dont want to feel like the kid on the short bus, so if i compete i want to against the best. How about doing them solely based on genre...

1 week trance
1 week house
1 week....

everyone has their strong suits and you would probably get many different winners this way.

I pwn minimal and tech ftwwwwwwwwwwww

yeah i understand the short bus effect hehehe...

i guess the problem with soley trance or soley house contests is that how would you choose the next weeks person to do a different genre? if the person that wins the trance contest...well they are probably going to want to make a trance contest as the winner. so i think that's the reason it's been how it is....

i would think you'd almost have to make a couple different contests entirely...

going on that idea though...what if we had more than one person making part of the contest a week? for instance 2-3 people make a file of 20-30 IDs...and then maybe each of those people specialize in a genre...then you would have a best overall, but also perhaps a best in each of the genres (that person making the next week for that genre)?

One thing I think.

Fair dos to Jan for winning it all the time, but how many has he made now? 6 or 7?

Time for him to step down and stop winning, I reckon. Or at least say 'the person below me can do the next comp'.

lol poor jan...it's not his fault he's so good

yeah but maybe...who knows.

Chris what do you think about what i said above. maybe 2-3 people making samples per contest...each specialized in a genre...then having an Overall Winner, but a winner of each genre (who will make the next batch of IDs for that genre). is that too complicated?

Posted by GroundLine on Apr-07-2006 14:13:

Well, SandLeaper has passed on some contests to give a chance for others to win.

And about the cheating, I doubt it happens very often. I think the host of the competition would figure it out anyway...

Maybe the scoreboard should only be updated once or twice a week to keep the suspension...

yeah i mean jan has made a lot, but there's been plenty of other winners really...it just seems like he wins all the time.

and yeah it seems like the scoreboard is a problem...because those of us that are really into the contest...send in answers right away, then maybe by the time people get to it...well they don't think there is any point because the high scores already...

Yeah its a good idea in theory, and would be fairer, but imagine trying to get 3 or 4 people to all submit IDs at a certain time to the organiser. It just wouldnt happen

At least with one person controlling the contest like it is now, everything is done under their terms. They put it up when they're ready. No waiting weeks for the one fool to give the controlling person their 10 IDs.

Course there'd also be the problem of correcting. Who corrects the samples? The overall winner or the person who submitted the 10 IDs? If its the latter, then the overall winner has to send about 5 PMs for every 1 he receives, just to make sure everyone has the samples. Having one person correcting would be easier, but then the other people would fight, as THEY'D want to correct their own genre.

Tis a good idea, but knowing people in general and knowing this place for a few years, I'd say it would be far too much trouble

Perhaps we could try genre-specific ID comps tho. Like having a Trance competition and a Main competition. Then the next month having a Psy competition and a Main competition. Just to keep things different. It would be harder to organise, but might work.

The only other thing I can think up off the top of my head is timing. I think a month is too long. Two weeks would be ok. Face it, everyone downloads the samples straight away and works on them. Then they come back to them 2 days before the comp ends. Cutting down to 2 weeks would be better I reckon.

Just a few thoughts

Posted by THE_Chris on Apr-07-2006 14:23:

Or another idea could be to post the scoreboard, but keep the top 3 and their scores hidden. That way people would know what they need to do, without being overly worried about not having a chance.

Posted by Floorfiller on Apr-07-2006 14:25:

yeah i agree probably too hard to organize hehehe

but maybe some kind of genre-specific comp sometime i dunno...

Posted by THE_Chris on Apr-07-2006 14:26:

...or DJ specific. Do an Armin ID comp, with about 30 tracks that Armin has played. Then do a PvD one. something like that.

Then there'd be no more fights about genres

see but then it's like you can only really do like tiesto, armin, pvd, sasha...and that's about it because if you try to do a j00f contest you'll be the only one hehehe

and wouldn't that be a little TOO easy? i mean i bet some people would get 100% on something like that...i mean if someone did a sasha one...i know i'd clean it up

Posted by THE_Chris on Apr-07-2006 14:32:

True... I guess the current format is pretty ok, I just wish people would stop moaning so much about why they're not doing well

I still reckon a month is too long. 2 weeks would be ok. Maybe 2 weeks of comp then 2 weeks off.

Also, dont show the top 3 or 5 on the scoreboard. Let those people know by PM though. But dont tell anyone else.
